The pervasive insinuations of non-profits, religion, government, and news media is that the world is more violent than ever and that the need for "them" and their protective presence is even more necessary. Using the available best data Pinker methodically debunks the myth of human violence being worse than ever, and pinpoints the "humanizing" mechanisms of this historic and chronic reduction in our violent behavior. This is not euphoric optimism...rather this hope is the result of hard sought, carefully gathered, statistically well-treated, historical and contemporary data.

There is reason to hope that we may live in an even safer world while guiding more and more of our law and order and offensive military might toward more productive initiatives.
