I enjoyed all of the songs on this album, but if I had to rate which ones were my personal favorites, it would go something like this: "Only Children", "Dreamsicle", "Overseas", and "It Gets Easier". The last song is a great comment on Jason's alcoholism and continuing recovery. I am prejudiced, but I really don't see Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires producing anything other than a very fine effort. I'll be 72 this June and have not been much impressed with the more recent current crop of country/folk/blues/rock/R&B--Jason does 'em all--artists. Jason and Amana and the 400 Unit definitely stand out.
There were several times during the listening of the CD that I detected strains of the great folk/country performer, Danny O'Keefe--especially in the "Running" cut. Not a bad guy to imitate--in my view. In "River", I thought I heard a little John Prine influence.
Fine album..... I'll leave it to others to try to pick apart the album
