This important book should be required reading for every psychiatry student in the nation! I was completely blown away by the idea that “mental health” is really “brain health” and that all the stigma and shame people feel about having a psychiatric condition is misplaced. When you understand that what we think of as psychiatric disorders are actually rooted in the physical functioning of the brain, it wipes out the damaging notions that it’s somehow your fault. Even better, Dr. Amen uses his gift for storytelling to show how some people who had been diagnosed with things like schizophrenia and were told they'd have to be on medication their entire life didn’t have the condition at all and were able to get off the meds and overcome their symptoms. I know far too many people who are suffering who need to read this book. If you’re struggling or you love someone who's suffering, I highly recommend it. There is hope!
