An auto-biography by Shen Fu written during the Imperial period in China around1809. The writing is lyrical and conveys the authors appreciation of beauty and tolerance and joy in the simple life of ordinary Chinese people. His marriage to his young sweetheart and their life together where they care for each other in a way that is both compassionate and joyous. Their outlook on sex is tolerant beyond measure. He talks about living moderately for they are not rich by any means, but find joy in simple, for us now, ordinary pursuits. "When the lotus flowers bloom in the summer, they close up at night but open again in the morning. Yun (his wife) used to put a few tea-leaves in a gauze bag and put it inside a lotus flower before it closed in the evening. The next morning she would take out the tea and boil it with natural spring water. It had a wonderful and unique fragrance". Magic!
