Having my first memorable moments in the early 1960's I could not put down this 600 page volume which put incredible detail and vivid color to the political events, drama and intrigue of the years 1960 - 1964 as viewed through the path of LBJ. Robert Caro's scholarly research in this his 4th volume includes; Why LBJ did not actively campaign in 1960, why JFK offered him the VP, why LBJ accepted the VP, how RFK tried to get LBJ to withdraw his nomination in LA, how LBJ was a campaign asset to JFK, LBJ relegated to being a backseat VP, LBJ vs. RFK battles, The Cuban Missile Crises, LBJ at the 100th Anniversary of Gettysburg, the Bobby Baker Scandal, did JFK plan to dump LBJ from the '64 Ticket, the drama of Dallas, LBJ arising to the occasion in taking charge, the Warren Commission, how many of his friends - the Southern Democrates became LBJ's biggest challenge, LBJ and Congress including the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Bill and early Viet Nam. The good and bad of LBJ. Many questions with many answers.
