This is one of those rare exceptions where a movie version might be better than the book. This is (so far) the longest novel in the series. That, in and of itself, is not a detraction. However, the bulk of the passages are melancholy and depressing. The writing is lacks the previous attributes which defined the style, meandering and wandering off in ways that were, quite frankly, boring. This describes much, but not all, of the book. There are moments where it becomes exciting, frightening, and exhilarating. It is all the more disappointing when it reverts back to "blah". The ending is also somewhat less than satisfying, and the division of "good and bad" does not permit for any mending of fences in any way. This is, very typically English (I am American). And while I enjoy the darkness and poor judgements that are far more realistic than the "happy ending", it was sad that Harry's behavior seemed like he could use a really good shrink at 15 years old. Of course, given what he went through, no surprise.
