5.0 out of 5 starsSimple enough for science savvy 6 year old and interesting enough for his Mom.
Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2014
My six year old is very fascinated with the elements (partly from the They Might be Giants song) and partly because he is a young science freak. This book is simple enough for him to understand and interesting enough for me to be happy reading it despite the fact it brings me back to having to retake chemistry in summer school. The visuals are very bold but seem to help him retain and remember the chemical symbols. The symbols are on the right hand corner of the page. Easy to cover and quiz.

This might be a slightly more entertaining way to help memorize and learn the elements for someone struggling to keep attention on studying them because if I find it even tolerable to read it has some entertainment value. Note that not all elements are really represented equally--some of the newer elements and less used elements are grouped together and given a page when iron is given a full page spread.

3.0 out of 5 starsCute Book, but skips a lot of elements
Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2019
This is not a comprehensive book for the periodic table. My son was frustrated that it skipped elements. I would recommend this book instead: https://smile.amazon.com/Basher-Science-Complete-Periodic-Elements/dp/0753471973/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_sims?ie=UTF8

2.0 out of 5 stars Cute, but...

I struggled with what rating to give this book in a similar way that I struggled to figure out the appropriate age range for this book. Ultimately, the one led to the other, and I am giving this book a low rating because I don't think the authors knew who they were writing for. There are aspects of chemistry that make things make sense, like knowing why the periodic table is arranged the way it is and the number of electrons in each layer. Those things are not addressed. Instead, we have a page for each of many elements, both common and obscure, with detailed and cute descriptions. The descriptions contain advanced terminology, like "sublimation," which a child would struggle with, but also cartoon images and, again, cutesy descriptions, that older kids would probably not be into.

I got this for my 10 year old, but I found I had to explain a lot to him off the top of my head or by looking things up in other sources because this book excludes so many basic things. At the same time, it jumps to some obscure things and uses some advanced terminology. In fact, the glossary at the back does not define sublimation, but does define "beta particle" (unnecessarily advanced) and "alchemy" (random).

If you know what you're getting, this is a very cute book. I'm still not sure where it fits beyond being a kitschy book for chemistry lovers. If you're looking for an intro to chemistry for kids, get a different book - if not instead of this, in addition to this.

2.0 out of 5 stars PLEASE use the “Look Inside” link in Amazon to see if you like these before you buy

I purchased the physics, chemistry, and periodic table books in this series and returned them shortly after receiving them. PLEASE use the “Look Inside” link in Amazon to see if you like these before you buy. I over-trusted the positive reviews.

I was looking for a simple instructive book to teach my oldest 2 kids the sciences. They are young; ages 6&7. I was disappointed with these books for 3 reasons:

1. Wordy, wordy, wordy. These books seem more interested in making a verbal soup than in clearly explaining concepts. Every concept is introduced by a paragraph that has nothing to do with the concept being explained, but it does so in a lot of words. For example, the first paragraph on speed states: “Everybody’s in a hurry these days, and that makes me a hot commodity! Internet connection speed, tight deadlines, and speed dating- I’m where it’s at. But what’s the rush? Chill.” Very little physics involved in that paragraph, and it starts confusing deadlines with velocity right off the bat. Every page starts with a wordy intro like this.

2. Zero interaction between concepts: Each page is dedicated to a concept, but there is almost no explanation of how the concepts interact. The second paragraph of each page tries to do so, but just in one paragraph, and still with wordy explanations that seem to be trying harder to make science cool than to make it clear.

3. Anime characters: the page opposite each explanation has an anime character for that concept. The pictures have very little pedagogical value; so I don’t find them useful for instruction. Now maybe if they had flash cards so you could make them play together… that might be instructive. But as is, they’re just not useful for teaching.

I’m still hunting for a good book to help teach kids science. I applaud the authors for what they’re trying to do, but I think simpler explanations, more well-thought illustrations, and really showing how things interact would make a better book.

There are actually elements missing!!! And the illustrations, which could have been a great visual learning tool, were sloppy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Much Too Basic

I expected these cards to have more information about each element than they did. They really didn't help my 6th grader learn the periodic table of elements or prepare for her element quizzes as I had hoped. I wish I hadn't ordered them. The book did not contain any more information than the cards.

2.0 out of 5 stars Amazon says age 10+

This seemed like a great book until our kid asked "what's death row?" - apparently the author found that a relevant example to include in a brief description of potassium... not awesome. If that doesn't bother you, buy the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Elements Lacking
Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2011
My son is a fan of Basher Books and has them all except for this one. The reason is that he was very disappointed to find that there were missing elements, even some of the ones pictured! I also found the fact the table was not complete detracted from the interest of the book. The beauty of the periodic table is that is classifies ALL matter.

2.0 out of 5 stars Missing Elements
Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2011
My son just started reading this book and found that in almost every chapter there is at least one element missing. Not being a chemistry expert, is there some reason why all the elements would not be listed? My son enjoys the book, however it is disappointing that he can't read about each element in the periodic table. We are homeschoolers and are using this as part of our class so I would have liked a complete listing of the elements. If you just want an introduction to the elements I suppose it would be fine.
