A dedicated group of professionals restored this badly cut film to a version that Fuller wanted. This is a "chamber" war story with a focus on character interactions and details rather than a a collection of sweeping battle scenes.
This is not poignant and humanistic film that is :All Quiet on the Western Front" but memorable in its own way.
The extra features are quite interesting as well with discussions of what was required to include the missing portions pf the film. Fuller and Marvin were not alive for the restoration interviews but their personalities enhance the flavor of the extras.

I have always considered this a good movie, but it was too picaresque. The shorter cut lacks a central theme, and the movie suffers. This longer cut adds in that theme, and viscerally. It promotes this from good war movie to great human war story. The only version I will ever watch again.

As well, it allows Lee Marvin the space to turn in the greatest performance of his career as he embodies that theme, "the only glory in war is surviving."

Theatrical Movie has been restored in HD. Sharp, Clean Picture....Much better compared to old DVD. Reconstruction Version is in Standard Definition. I had never seen the Reconstruction Version, this was done long after the director, Samuel Fuller died. That version is difficult to follow and at times, didn't make any sense, doesn't flow well at all. Editing is poor as well. I could have definitely gone an entire lifetime without seeing Lee Marvin approached by the homosexual German doctor....(shudders)...Overall, Original Theatrical Blu-Ray movie is Great.... Reconstruction Version you may watch just Once, you can live without it just fine.

This was my favorite boyhood WW2 from the past and was glad to see an additional 47 minutes of never before seen footage added to the film. It was sharp and clear, because it was digitally restored, and it featured originally deleted scenes, such as "Arab Fighters in the desert cutting the ears off dead soldiers" and other lengthy battle scenes, with tons of explosions, squad rifle action, and more, a treasure for the 80s era WW2 Hollywood Movie Buffs. You will not be disappointed. Features 2 DVDs: Disc 1 has the long reconstructed movie. Disc 2 has alternate scenes, and commentary on restoring the movie, a documentary entitled "The Real Glory" Reconstructing the Big Red One, a War Department Film "The Fighting First", 1980 Promo Reel, Theatrical Trailer, Radio Spots, and lastly, the 2004 Reconstruction Trailer-Stills Gallery. Also priced just right $.

Specs: 162 Minutes, Widescreen, Digitally Remastered Movie with Soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Made in 2004, includes 2 DVDs. Warner Bros.

Great movie. This is a war movie made when Hollywood made movies still, not all these movies trying to be imperfect to make it seem more real to the viewer. I like Movies shows where you escape while watching it. This movie is like that

An excellent movie, probably the most realistic ever made, without being unduly gory. This surely is one of Lee Marvin's best roles, and he handled it magnificently. All the rest of the cast also were marvelous. Great script, fine direction, beautifully filmed, absolutely top-notch all the way around. If some youngster in your family has dreams of enlisting, have them watch this first.

Hi Folks,

I sadly didn't read the "fine print" and ordered this as soon as I found it was available.... just popped it in my machine and found no chapter stops for the extended / preferred version ..... okay no worries I'll watch it start to finish.... and then read that it is in STANDARD definition! I'm glad WB issued this movie on BR , I'm grateful they included all the bonus features from the wonderful 2 disc DVD set , but WHY didn't they bother to release the NEWER , BETTER, HIGHLY TOUTED version in HD ? Lazy? Cheap? both?

I rate this a 5 star movie... the two disc DVD set is a 5 star set..... but releasing this on BR in standard definition rates a big fat 2 stars (which means "I don't Like it" according to Amazon.com). Love the movie , am disappointed with this HD , Non HD release and am warning others like me who assume because a company is releasing a movie on BR that the movie will be HD!

The Big Red One is my favorite Sam Fuller film. I had seen it when it was released and this Reconstruction version improves what was a very good film to begin with. The scenes of liberating a concentration camp were particularly compelling. The films of Sam Fuller are an acquired taste and while I don't like all of them I very much like The Big Red One, Steel Helmet, Verboten, and a film deserving much greater attention, White Dog. The Big Red One - The Reconstruction is a film I would recommend to anyone interested in Fuller or in the genre of war films.
