"Get Tough" is worthwhile on two counts: 1) Its techniques for hand-to-hand combat, self-defense techniques are now classic, effective tactics used in the West and appear clearly applicable today; 2) From a historical perspective, it illustrates how those martial arts techniques were introduced to emerging, Western special operations forces in World War and provides a graphic illustration why they were effective against unaware German and Italian troops. The brief biographical information on the original author, Capt. W.E. Fairbairn of Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife fame, gives credibility to what he was teaching: He was a member of Western colonial powers' Shanghai police force and learned from first-hand experience the devastating effectiveness of Far Eastern martial arts. Fairbairn passed these skills on to fellow European police officers and the U.S. Marine Corps contingent in pre-World War II China before going on to train the new British Special Operations Executive and Home Guard personnel when Great Britain stood alone in 1940. The techniques are ruthless and deadly, just like the SOE became in World War II.

Very good tactics are described in this book, but it lacks depth overall, omitting completely the stances and movements that allow one to complete the tactics with efficiency and power. Nonetheless, what can be gained from this book is an important attitude that stresses using every resource available, and not considering anything to be below the belt. The fighting he described is not fighting for honor or sport, but rather, kill or be killed.

Easy to understand, even if you aren't a tough guy. Fairbairn explains basic techniques in simple, easy language that anyone can understand. Diagrams are the original illustrations and look great. Read this book when I was young, and this Kindle version is just as good. Should be required reading for any man and his significant other. With practice (yes, you have to practice these lessons) any able bodied person can get a good grasp of self defense, without any elaborate nonsense or mysticism. This is basic physics and anatomy, your girlfriend or teenager can learn some of the basic moves with practice. Don't expect to be an expert at all of the lessons in this book, just use the basics. You won't regret it. I hope you never need these lessons.

Bought it for myself because I remember my hand to hand combat training that we were using this book back in 1964 during black ops in south east Asia. I bought another for a friends son that is overseas in the Army. The government don't train them like they use to. Today you don't know who to trust.

You're not going to just read this book and become a bad ass, but if you took the time to practice the stuff in here you could defend yourself. As a piece of history it's a good read too.

Great list of techniques. Not written for a beginner, though some techniques are do-able by a beginner. The pictures are great for most techniques, though some leave something to be desired. Little to no safety instruction is included, so be aware if you practice these techniques.
