I buy one of these for all my rookies. I cannot recommend it enough. When you’re new in the career of Law Enforcement, the blue flame burns bright and you think nothing will ever affect you. As the blue flame begins to burn out you begin to see the toll this job takes on your family. How it changes who you are as a person. How it can easily push away loved ones and break up marriages. This book navigates all that and let’s you know what’s happening to you and why with creative ways to overcome those problems. 11/10 would recommend. No matter how many years in, READ THIS BOOK.

I became a police officer in January of 2002, the same year that Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement was first published. I've often commented on how much police work has changed, just in the thirteen years since I first pinned on the badge.

Now I'm a husband, father and patrol Sergeant, facing the daily challenge of balancing my personal needs with those of my family, command staff and troops. I only recently discovered Dr. Gilmartin's book after it was recommended at the 99th FBI-LEEDA Supervisor Leadership Institute, but now I wish someone had handed it to me ten years ago.

Yes, things have changed since I became a cop, but the behavioral patterns, concepts and ideas discussed in Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement remain the same. Having personally experienced almost every one of the "symptoms" listed in the book, I felt as if I were staring into a mirror with the turn of every page. At the same time, however, by the time I closed the cover, it felt like a great weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. Not only was I NOT ALONE in my experiences, but I was now armed with the knowledge to reverse their negative effects.

It doesn't matter how much experience the reader has, this book is just as appropriate as an academy graduation gift or part of the promotional process. Just as effective as preventative medicine for idealistic rookies, as it is a "shot in the arm" for cynical veterans. There is no "right time" to become an emotional survivor, so start reading!

Not everything in this book applied to me but quite a bit of it did. The things that did not speak to me however I have seen affect other people. This book opens your eyes to the psychological effects of the daily grind that is being the Police. It uncovers things that a lot of people don’t think about and can help many identify those hard to explain stress factors that plague LEOs and are left a mystery to their loved ones. One of the best illustrations is how Gilmartin explains the roller coaster of stress and downtown and how many LEOs cope. He also suggests ways to help counter the negative effects of that roller coaster. What helped me the most was the second half of the book that covered the stress placed on LEOs by their organization, supervisors and others that create policy or have a hold over a department. Many LEOs will tell you there is more stress coming from the chain of command than there is dealing with bad guys on the street. Gilmartin uses plain language that cuts to the heart of the matter and offers insight on how to manage the internal stress coming from the department itself. If you are an Officer, Deputy, Agent, Detective or any other position as an LEO this book can help you understand why so many of us are the way we are. This book may safe your marriage or other valued relationships. It may save your life.
