Modern Monopolies tells the story of online platforms - who are becoming powerful middlemen by facilitating transactions through their two-sided network. Uber, AirBnB, Ebay, Alibaba, and others don't operate any services themselves, but merely connect consumers to suppliers. By signing up and connecting the two sides they are building zero marginal cost businesses while taking advantage of dynamics which lead to one dominant platform in a market. The value grows as the number of connections increase.

However, setting up a new platform is not a build-it-and-they-will-come overnight success. Platforms need to be properly structured, offer the right features, and change and adapt over time. The best platforms have pivoted many times in their history. Facebook and Twitter are almost unrecognizable from their original incarnations, as they have shifted and adapted to changing trends.

This is an excellent book, and goes into great detail about its premise (the "modern monopoly") and how it is fundamentally different from the traditional monopolies that dominated (and exploited) capitalism in the past. Unlike many other books, Moazed and Johnson draw their evidence from modern examples: Facebook, Apple, Google, Uber, the large players whom have made their fortunes from the new "platform business model".

Modern Monopolies discusses the power of networks, and how the traditional "one-to-many", B-to-C model is evolving into a "many-to-many", C-to-C model with a platform business as the supervisor. The authors combine theory with practice, bringing in economic theory but supplementing it with real-world, historical examples.

This is useful for any business person, from an entrepreneur trying to make his/her way with a small startup to the largest Fortune 500 CEO trying to pivot and evolve their corporation. After reading this, I was inspired to think about what other sorts of traditional, one-to-many businesses could be transformed via a many-to-many model. Highly recommended.

I came across Modern Monopolies looking to grasp a better understanding of the in's and out's of platform business models. The book jumped right into case studies on why the platform model is disrupting and dominating society today. It brought the concept of platform-based business to an immediate comprehension and understanding of the core benefits. In reading further into the book, you uncover applications to a variety of industries and how to take principles from the learnings on the platform model to many different types of companies. You will learn why companies failed - sharing commons themes like growing pains, rise of competition or movement from a core offering. I found significant benefit from the case studies of why companies dominated - how their business model scaled, offered a value proposition to customers, or could adapt to the ever-changing landscape of clutter/content/change in today's society. I have no doubt that this book will inspire new ideas for doing business in a platform world.

Modern Monopolies is a very insightful deep dive into the types of companies that are now dominating business landscape across the world. Moazed and Johnson offer a detailed look into what makes a company truly valuable in the modern age.

These companies are not bound by their means of production; rather, their success hinges on a couple of crucial things: excellent technology and a network. Great tech is table stakes for a platform to be successful - it has to be easy to use, intuitive and beautiful. More importantly, however, is the ability for a company to create a vibrant and active network of users on the platform from to cater to the two interdependent sides of a transaction: the producers and consumers.

I recommend Modern Monopolies to anyone who wants to understand the special sauce behind today's most successful companies like Facebook, Uber, Air BnB, and more.

Very Impressive Business innovation for all Legacy companies. Sent 20 books I purchased to 20 of my S&P500 CEO friends. I expect they will take up my advice and implement Alex Moazed's Platform business model. This is the first book that states that this is what it takes for any company to be successful in a Cloud environment.

This book takes all of the dots that comprise the most successful companies in the world and connects them in a meaningful and palatable way. I loved the case studies of why certain companies failed (like MySpace) and highlights the road forward for dominating.

I'm only halfway through Modern Monopolies, but it's so good! Smart examples of where companies have gone right and wrong in the last 20 years and it lays out a vision of what the next step should be for the tech sector. Tip of the hat to the authors!

I really enjoyed the business analysis in Modern Monopolies. The authors don't seem like old professors, but that makes it more palatable since they know their stuff! Best book on platforms out there and one of my top 5 biz books for the year.

The author's insights gathered from past experiences with startups and research on platform businesses are clearly present throughout the book. It serves as a recent history lesson as well as a prescription for aspiring entrepreneurs. It will be interesting to see where the ideas presented in the "where to look next" section will be in years to come.

Overall, it was an easy and concise read. I definitely recommend this book if you are even remotely interested in the business structures of companies like Uber, Facebook, and Google.
