How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different approach

I’ve read every non-academic book on the right to die in the last 40 years and the scope of this new one comes as a pleasant change: in-depth, international, doctor-probing, and examining certain people who want accelerated death from birth to their life’s end.

The intensive studies of the backgrounds and philosophies of four doctors (Shavelson, Nitschke, Irwin, Kevorkian), ground-breaking professionals, are a gem in themselves, something not examined this way before.

The suffering and distress of selected persons with painful and distressing illnesses who are looking for a quick, non-violent end is told in deep, thoughtful stories. And compassionate. We need to know exactly how it is for some.

An examination of what most if not all people will go through at some time. Since we have no on/off switch, most will want to decide what is the best path for a life almost finished. The various options presented by the author show how difficult it is to carry out a program that doesn't impact on someone's idea of what should be. It was heartening to see that some who have taken strong stands against self deliverance have reversed themselves or at least become more understanding. Of course, those who benefit financially still, and perhaps morally as well, see to it that specious questions are raised to undermine those of us who don't think the way they do. This book allows one to examine self deliverance in a real setting rather than pompously preaching moral certainty. The author seemed to take special efforts not to impact on what people were doing or not doing. This book should be a classic to be studied by new medical professionals and legislators, and perhaps even clergy, before they decide to opine on the subject of finishing life. The title says it all. It's inevitable that at some point, we cease to exist on earth. How that happens could sure be better.

Katie Englehart approaches an incredibly thorny issue with grace and empathy. It’s not an easy read - because of the topic, not the writing - but it is a deeply moving one.

"Extreme longevity is a curse disguised as a gift." -Julian Baggini
If you don't understand the above quote, perhaps you should read this wonderful book.
Ms. Engelhart stated in an interview that the book took 5 years to write. It shows.
It covers how and why many people with devastating illnesses take control of the time and manner of their death rather than submit to a protracted dying process. Ms. Engelhart paints portraits of people participating or contemplating self-chosen deaths, both as patients and practitioners.
It is an easy-to-read book if you are not death phobic. Extensive references are listed in the back of the book. Highly recommended.

Dear Readers--having just had prostate surgery for the removal of a cancer--much to think on mortality and self control. Having control over my life-living alone--is important. Living in an Orthodox country limits some choices and assistence. Take your time reading this book-philosophy to ponder.

Well written in-depth overview of the history and current laws, experts and their contributions. To do this she uses diverse individuals stories that are impacted by various shortcomings of the law or other facets of vagrancy of statutes over time.

The author present what can be a very emotional subject and presented it in a neutral way. She did this while still allowing the readers to connect with the book. I still learned a lot about the subject while I was reading the book.

Blowing your brains out has always been an American right. Now some are starting to suggest we no longer live in the Wild West.
