American Kingpin is a captivating depiction of the Silk Road marketplace, from its launch in 2011 to the capture of Ross Ulbricht (“Dread Pirate Roberts”) in 2013. Bilton’s story, meticulously crafted from chat logs, in-person interviews, and Silk Road message boards, is fast-paced and layered.
For anyone familiar with the story of the Silk Road, this book is an especially good deep dive on the entire history of the site. It’s not only about Ulbricht and his vision, but also about the law enforcement agents and agencies trying to shut him down. I found the inner-workings and interplay between the FBI, Homeland Security, the IRS, and other agencies to be fascinating.
Highly recommended.

I was a bit surprised to see this book only had 3.6 stars. I loved the book! I enjoy reading things of this nature! I will say this if you have a hard time following stories this might be a tuff read. I did not have a problem but a friend of mine could not keep all the people straight. The book jumps back and forth between multiple people and it might be hard to follow for some. I loved the book and will have to check out more by Nick Bilton.

I don't think I've ever read a book this big in one sitting. I knew the background of the Silk Road and watched the reporting of Ulbricht's arrest and trial, but I had no idea how involved this was. Not if, but when they make the movie, they can use this book exactly as it is as the screenplay. It was very well written.

I thought I was familiar with the story of the rise and fall of the Silk Road, but Nick Bilton took the story a million times further than I had expected it to go. The underlying narrative is inherently technical, but it's told so well that it feels like reading a story about how bureaucracy works and how technical semantics can actually be hugely important. I unreservedly recommend this book to anyone reading this review; if I didn't have five thousand other books to read on my kindle right now I would be sorely tempted to start reading it from the beginning again.

It's not Shakespeare, but the story is incredibly entertaining. I found myself disappointed when I had to put it down.

American Kingpin is a well-written and well-researched book that definitely informs the readers!!!!!! I liked reading this book mainly for the reason that he has a good part but also a part that was exploited by a bad use of technology!!! I would recommend this book to anyone!!!

This is going to make for a blockbuster movie. The casting director is going to have the easiest job on the planet for this flick.

This is an interesting true story, and it was well written. Book is hard to put down once you start reading.
