1.0 out of 5 starsDont waste your money and time on this book, will add no value whatsoever!
Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2014
Well, normally I don't write reviews. But this book is so idiotic, theoretical and hypothetical that I have to stop the potential readers from wasting their valuable time. At the end of this review, I have provided 3 self help books which are MUST to have.

Alright....So, I have read too many 'self help' books so to speak while most of them were very hypothetical and unrealistic, only a few were well written with practical advice and packed with some real good examples.

'No Excuses' by Brian Tracy is really hopeless. It is crazily hypothetical and it doesn't speak of anything which you might not probably be aware of. Like say Write the Goals, Read them everyday, Do this...Do that....etc. Alright, alright, we all know that goal writing is important but how the goals should be articulated is left open to public and most of which will do it wrong and eventually frustration kicks in. The missing point is what only a few books address (Well, I'm not saying that books which teach you how to set goals is better, my point is broader: A good book is the one which has some good nuggets that we can inculcate and become a better person). And this book is definitely not the one!

Let me give you an example: Our great Brian Tracy says that if you improve some 0.0001% every week then by 1 year you will be 1000 or so % better than what you are today....What non sense!!!! Don't we have smartphone to compound all this for ourselves?
As I said, this is one of the hypothetical stuff that he has mentioned.

Whenever we buy any self help book, it is basically to 1. enable us live a better life and 2. provide some concrete easy to follow guidance on being a better person on all fronts.

Agreed that all self help books eventually would speak something which we are typically aware of but still the quality of a book can be judged only by the real life examples provided in the book related to the exact advise being shared.

Take my words - The best self help books that I have come across till date (By the way, I have tons of books on my Kindle!) is:

1. Mastery - Robert Greene (Bit long but very practical and great examples to which he related all his advise)
2. The Practicing Mind - Lovely book - Excellent - This doesn't talk about "Set goals", "Write Goals","Read Goals" but it insists the reader to focus on the process rather than the product in an excellent way. You would love this book for sure!
3. The Compound Effect - Still reading this....

Once you have these three books then you need not look any further.

When I first began listening to Brian Tracy's audio CD, I would fall asleep within minutes and wake up after it had stopped. I thought - "well, I guess I can use it for relaxation when I can't sleep..." Anyway, I am happy to say that I am now staying awake and Mr. Tracy's words are extremely helpful to me. He speaks in a clear, easy-to-understand matter-of-fact manner and demonstrates a lot of common sense and practical advice. Self discipline has always been a problem for me, and now that I am retired and in addition have some health issues, I really needed help in this area. Much of Mr. Tracy's advice relates to the workplace but he also covers other facets of life as well. (I only wish that in the years I was working I had this CD because it would have helped me a great deal in my job). One of the quotes he uses which I found most helpful was "self-discipline is doing what you have to do, when you have to do it, whether you feel like it or not". When I don't want to do things, or don't even feel like getting out of bed, I repeat this to myself like a mantra, and it really helps. To me, the value of any self-help program is: has it created a positive change? Mr. Tracy's book passes the test because I am amazed at how much more I am accomplishing in my daily life. I listen to the tapes over and over, and every time I hear something I didn't notice before. Incidentally, I think this would be a great gift for a young person going off to college or starting a new job. I only wish that I had it years ago.

Not knowing what to expect, I bought "No Excuses!" anyway and gave it a shot. What I found out was that Brian Tracy is an excellent writer. His book: "No Excuses!" guides you to developing self-discipline, step-by-step for higher success. He's the best writer on the topic of self-discipline I've ever read. The book is a golden learning tool.

Tracy gives you multiple examples of self-discipline, with plenty of take-action plans for your success. I liked reading the book's 21 well-written chapters focusing on self-discipline for self-improvement. Brian delivers clearly written stories to lucidly show the high importance of self-discipline.

I rate the book: BRILLIANT! Tracy is a master writer. He takes you by the hand and walks you down the path to using self-discipline. Do you want clear guidance for far better success? Easy to understand, the book is well-written and simple to follow:
- Its a powerful personal success manual on self-discipline.
- The book clarifies what self-discipline is and shows its powerful benefits.
- Tracy delivers many helpful ways to use self-discipline for higher achievement.

Best of all, I found that at the end of each chapter is a list of helpful questions designed to guide you for better self-discipline. Do you want faster and better success? Strong and bold, No Excuses! is a top shelf book you'll love for its usefulness. I rate the book at least 5 Gold Stars for its help on self-discipline. P.S. - I am just a reader who has been reading Tracy's books for 25 years. This is one of his best. Thank you.

To your self-discipline for success: Good Luck! -Mark LaMoure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended (Audio book)

This review is based on the audio book version of the book which is complete, unabridged and best of all, read by the author himself!

Brian is a man who speaks my language: logic and straight to the point. He makes it clear that there are no shortcuts to achieving MASSIVE success and if you're willing to take him on as your coach-in-a-book, it's hard to mess up.

Mind you, the principles are sound, it will depend on the application. It's a book I keep in my car and play on repeat to make sure I didn't miss anything and took the liberty of interpreting its content to my own whims.

Read and re-read the book while asking yourself of the parts that make you feel uncomfortable. It's hard not to fight certain truths in this book as it forces you to take responsibility in all aspects of your life and that is a daunting task that only great people should be willing to do.

All his principle are tangible and not "wish it so it will become" kind of medley that a lot of new age authors tend to do. Not that it's wrong to do so, but I notice a LOT of adherents of such books tend to rely heavily on laws of attraction, which won't work on its own. This is a book of action and it will upset certain personality types. I highly recommend this book

One of my favorite movie scenes is when Al Pacino is dressing down the faculty at the Baird School in "Scent of a Woman" when he tells of the many times he has come to the crossroads in his life. He says he always knew what was the right thing to do but never did it because it was just too hard. Too many people go through life just like the Colonel. That's why books like NO EXCUSES: THE POWER OF SELF DISCIPLINE, by Brian Tracy are necessary.

As the introduction states, "Your ability to think, plan and work hard in the short term and to discipline yourself to do what is right and necessary before you do what is fun and easy is the key to creating a wonderful future for yourself." Just like the Colonel, we know the right things to do, but often choose an easier route. This is why self discipline is the key ingredient needed to break the habit of mediocrity.

All of Brian Tracy's books are well worth reading, and I have to put this one in the top two or three. Here Tracy explores self discipline and how its' refinement and application benefit so many aspects of life. This is self discipline as it applies to everything from money to relationships; goal setting to problem solving.

The book is broken into three main parts, Self Discipline and Personal Success; Self Discipline and Business, Sales and Finances; and finally Self Discipline and The Good Life. Each part has 7 related chapters. Each chapter concludes with Action Exercises.

You won't have much success getting where you want to be in life without a big dose of self discipline. This book will help show you the way; how to build it, and how to apply it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brian Tracy, a Genuine Mentor
Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2012

Brian Tracy persuades us to decide what we really want before trying to solve pressing problems or set goals. His practical instruction and inspiring examples from his own life are useful for personal or professional development. In this book, Tracy exposes the lie behind false shortcuts to success and a meaningful life. He makes self-discipline the first step, not the last step, to success. Buy this book to learn why the easy way out is actually the long, hard road.

Surprisingly, one recent reviewer attacks Tracy as an advocate of wishful thinking and shallow values: "Fantastical beliefs of New Thought" "Venal materialism" "false religion." Tracy himself points out the limitations of The Secret. It's true Tracy shows how to develop both the conscious and unconscious part of your brain. Modern science has shown the power of unconcious thought in human behavior, so that's no fantasy.

Tracy does help us develop innate talents and encourage mutual success at work or home. Money is just one resource to help accomplish that goal on a larger scale. Equating Tracy's success habits with "venal materialism" seems counterproductive if you seek meaning beyond your own four walls.

My career requires helping people improve their lives despite difficult challenges. Helping anyone--especially ourselves--to change for the better requires the best persuasive skills and self-discipline available. I don't agree with everything Brian Tracy says. Still, he's been my best guide in thinking for myself and living with more purpose and joy than regret. Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Good Advice, But With Extreme Limitations
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2016

Self-discipline is a vitally important personal asset. This speaks for itself; without self-discipline you can't fully commit to/or discontinue anything you do with your life.
The book is split up to 3 parts:
I) Self Discipline and Personal Success.
II) Self Discipline In Business, Sales, and Finances.
III) Self-Discipline and the Good Life.

The author was clearly the most qualified to write the first part. It relied more on wisdom and and self reflection then on more narrow-based expertise like the other parts. It said some really penetrating things about character, persistence, courage, and the like. Part II was pretty good, considering the author can speak on behalf of his experience in sales and what not. But for the most part, you can definitely get more sophisticated coverage on the subject matter in other books and places. Some people prefer to read it in books, but there's really nothing new here that you can't necessarily look up online and easily find as a top search result. Part III (which talks about health, marriage, fitness, etc.) seemed to be clearly out the author's realm of expertise, and i'd go as far to say that it is as specious as it is officious, and should have probably been left out of the book. Despite the fact it may have been an earnest attempt of a veridical analysis, it comes out to look like overreaching vainglory or huckster pseudoscience. One small example: he makes a list of 7 key health habits: 1. Eat Regularly 2. Eat lightly 3. Don't Snack In Between Meals etc (it doesn't get better). I know personally that research on this subject is uncertain, so to say it as it's the truth is a little unnerving. Also, nothing is cited in the text. Nevertheless, I do think this book can help people out but I hope that those buying it are aware of its severe limitations.
