How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsThis is how this book changed my life:
Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2014
It could be the shift in our thinking these days or maybe it was always like this. Taking responsibility seems to be less and less of an American trait among adults and, therefore, it will be a less likely trait of our children. As ashamed as I am to admit this, it took me over 30 years to begin to accept responsibility for my actions and for the situations I was at in life. When I did, EVERYTHING CHANGED.

When the switch got flipped for me, I was reading a book a friend suggested: The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. A week before I began the book, I had just encountered what felt like a devastating blow to my business. My earnings dropped over $3,000 in just two weeks. Things were not going as I had planned. I fell far shy of the goals I had set for myself. All the time and effort I had poured into my business looked as if it had not paid off and I felt like I lost control of where I was going. So I did what most people would do… I blamed everyone except for myself. I starting pointing the finger and saying, “this person didn’t do what they were supposed to do and this person didn’t do that, etc.” To me, there were a bunch of people at fault and none were the person in the mirror.

You know when you lie about something long enough, you start to believe it? Well, it works the same way when you’re blaming others long enough. The more you blame others, the easier it becomes and the more you believe it yourself. You will actually start believing it’s their fault. The problem with that is, it takes the focus off of the one person that can change the circumstances… YOU. The only person you can control is you. You can’t control other people’s actions.

I prayed for things to get back on track. I expected God to just make it easy for me and reward me for the work I had already done. Well, He answered my prayers in a very clever way. He decided to answer them by forcing me to grow personally. He used the book I mentioned above. I received many great messages from that book, but if I read the book and only got this one thing out of it, it was worth the entire read. The one thing was a quote by John Burroughs that changed my life and it came right when I needed it. It read, “A man can fail many times, but he isn’t a failure until he begins to blame somebody else.” I posted it at the beginning of this post and now I’ll post it again below. It’s that important.

A man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else.

That quote hit my like a ton of bricks in the face. The entire week before reading that quote I had blamed everyone else for what was happening with MY business. In fact, my entire life before reading that quote I had blamed others for my circumstances. I blamed student loan companies for requiring such high payments. I blamed my law school for raising prices after I had already been attending. I did the same with my undergraduate college. I blamed my job for not paying me enough and putting me in a tough situation financially. No one had been given a raise in over 5 years because my employer was near broke and didn’t know how to manage money and because of that, I paid for it… literally.

My entire life was a huge blame game until I read that quote. It changed everything for me. It’s so simple that most people won’t even see the power in its truth. Here’s the simple breakdown: I have failed many times… MANY times. You learn through failure. It’s a part of life. You show me someone who has never failed and I will show you someone who has never been successful. You reach success through failing. Although I have failed many times, I am NOT a failure. I will never be one and, therefore, I will never blame somebody else for my circumstances.

I look at blaming as a form of whining now. Whenever I see someone post on social media or hear them complain about their jobs, how much debt their in, their horrible co-workers, their family, etc. I only see how much they are whining and that their focus is on everything except what it needs to be on to change things… themselves.

HERE’S THE GOOD NEWS
"The superior man blames himself. The inferior man blames others." - Don ShulaNo matter where you come from, no matter what situation you are in, no matter how bad of a hand you feel that life has dealt you, it’s your fault. The first time I heard a friend say that, the quote above popped in my head. He’s was right. IT IS YOUR FAULT. The good news? Well, YOU can do something about it. That’s right… YOU can and only you can. It’s a decision. That’s what it boils down to; a simple decision. You either are or you’re not going to take responsibility for your circumstances.

Here’s what happened to me when I took full responsibility for my actions. I bounced back. Not only did my business get back to where it was, but it far surpassed it. Soon I was earning in two weeks what I was previously earning in one month. Not only that, I was helping other people do the same. I eliminated over $100,000 of student loan and credit card debt in under two years. My wife and I paid for our wedding in cash. We more than replaced my salary in under a year’s time and we have given ourselves the opportunity for complete time freedom for the rest of our lives. It was as simple as making a decision to turn the finger around and point it at myself. It was as simple as that.

There’s a glaring truth in the book and I’ve posted it below. We are on one of two paths in life. Which one are you on?

“If you want to measure where you are, if you want to know whether you’re on the success curve or on the failure curve, or if you want to assess anyone else and determine which curve they’re on, here’s how. There is one attitude, one state of mind, which overwhelmingly predominates either side of the curve. The predominant state of mind displayed by those people on the failure curve is blame. The predominant state of mind displayed by those people on the success curve is responsibility.” – The Slight Edge

As a book this rates way up there. Life changing. But I had gotten a copy at the library and the one I bought first of all cost $8 more than the jacket price and secondly is missing pages. Super disappointing when the page ends on and, and that's all there is. New chapter starts on the next page. Also 2 random chapters in the middle are totally in italics. Seems weird considering it's not throughout the book. Not sure whats up with this copy or this edition, but I would buy this book elsewhere if I were you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great message. Terrible execution.

Most self help material is repetitive but this book takes it to a whole new level.

The overall message, that it takes time to make change (good or bad) and how focusing on the little changes will lead to the big ones, is great but the author takes too much time going over the same concept, rewording slightly as the book progresses, that by the middle of the book I was ready to call it quits because I'd learned all I need to learn.

Also, I feel like the author pats himself on the back a little too often, and perhaps too heavily.

One of the most painful sections is where he says he is going to let his daughter finish the chapter, who hands it over to her mother before she is done, and then, even though he said otherwise, the author comes back to rehash everything they said.

The best material in this book comes from other books, which the author takes much time to explain even though the concept is straight forward.

I liked what he had to say. I just didn't like the way he said it.

I'm surprised how well reviewed this book is. It is very long winded, over-the-top with methaphor use, and can be summarized in about 10 lines. I bought as a recommendation from one of Tim Ferriss' guests recommendations and regret it.

There is a line in the book guaranteeing success or they will refund your money. I thought about taking them up on this but realized it's not worth the time or effort.

If you're the kind of person drawn to this type of book there is only a single book you ever need to read and you can stop with this genre: "how to win friends and influence people". Everything else is just an article stretched into a book.

Just one more thing: the author mentions "think and grow rich" at least 20 times throughout the book. This is up there for one of the most overrated books of all time and is indicitive of the shallow content provided between this products covers.

Don't waste your money

2.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Cheesy - Not For the Seasoned Psychology Reader
Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2016

Perhaps I have read too many popular psychology books already, but I was very disappointed and rolled my eyes at this thing every time I put it down. Certainly the beginning was amazing (first 30-40 pages) and couldn't wait for him to go more in depth. Sadly, the depth never comes, and the author just goes on and on about the same damn topic a million times. If you've already read books like The Talent Code, Thinking Fast and Slow, and The Art of Thinking Clearly, this book will be a step backwards for you.
Sadly, it has also become very cheesy in its tone, with its "you-can-do-it!" attitude, and "testimonials" from "real readers" at the end of every chapter. It starts to sound like a media showcase. Where's the substance? I suppose it can motivate you, but if you really are set on reading it, I suppose you should attempt to find the original version, which apparently is better according to other reviewers - wish I took their advice.

This book was OK at best. If you can grab a free copy, go ahead and skim the first chapter. You could just read a sample from a kindle book and glean all the useful info you will get from this book. Try harder than everyone else, develop good habits, quit bad ones, be intentional with your time and be willing to take risks. Those are the main points of this book. I just saved you some money and hours of reading. I wouldn’t have finished this book, but I felt obligated since I had spent money on it.

Bought this on a whim, needed something to read on the plane. I could only get halfway through it. first impression were a bunch of stories telling me that i was about to learn the "secret" eventually i learned the secret. The slight edge is to work harder and pay more attention to detail than other people do. Oh and develop good working habits too. Great messages and very true but they don't need a book to explain this simple concept. if they shortened the book to about 15 pages they could explain the same thing and i'd give it 5 stars for not wasting my time.. .

2.0 out of 5 stars Okay but way too drawn-out.....,,,,

Basically the compound effect in its essence, small choices made consistently over time matter and lead to the results that you get!

This book has some value in it, I just feel it is very repetitive and it could be condensed into a much shorter clearer read. I’m generally not a fan of personal development books sold by the success industry I prefer to read credible biographies of those who have done well and done good. I read this as a suggestion from a friend.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tired ideas delivered in a bragging and repetitive way

The main use behind this book - the slight edge - is that instead of expecting change or improvements to come quickly or in large amounts, we should work toward it everyday in an incremental way. How in the world does the author manage to beat this simple concept into the ground for 400 pages? By literally repeating it word-for-world a couple hundred times, and then having his daughter and then his wife come in to repeat it as well.

The slight edge is just SMART goals but less structured.

He’s has a great concept and it’s worth a read. However, it’s way too long, full of redundancy and regurgitated self help concepts from just about every self help book ever written. For these reasons it’s a hard read for people who like self help books. If this is your first self help book you’ll probably love it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Who Made This Terrible Font Shade Choice?
Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2015

Good content but terrible choice of font! Who decided that GRAY text was smart? Bad bad design that attempts to be "cool" but decreases readability. Reminds me of the biz card designers who think that having 10 pt type is great because wow, look at all that white space. Insulting, unnecessary, and counterproductive.

Before getting my own copy, i ordered 30 copies to use in my Reinvention Class at UCLA Technical Management Program, based on recommendations.

After two chapters trying to read this,,I have a headache.

This book could have been boiled down to a three page list of what the slight edge is and how to take advantage of it. Instead it goes on and on with repetition of the points relating to this theory. As I read it, I kept wondering why I was still reading it because the book kept repeating itself. I guess I was waiting for new information that never came.
