When I turned and read the last page, I was so impressed by the twist! I had to process all the other pages I read the last 2 days. Yes, 2 days because I couldn’t put down this exciting book! I also was intrigued by the historical accounts as well.
This book does exactly what good historical fiction should do - transport the reader. I've always been interested in Native American culture, and Ms. Duck shows her familiarity with the subject through solid facts and vivid descriptions. The author has a handle on many other historical subjects as well, giving enough details to intrigue the reader without bogging down the story. I truly became invested in all the characters in this book written in a parallel style, masterfully moving between two time periods. I cared what happened to each and every one, even the peripheral players, as the author did well with character development. I felt their joys and sorrows, a hateful man's bitterness and a nostalgic woman's grief. It's hard to believe that this is Ms. Duck's debut novel; I look forward to reading whatever she publishes next!
Amazing story telling in era that most writers tend to explore. Moving to New Jersey almost twenty years ago I never heard about the Lenepe and their history. This story makes readers understand how much of history has not changed and repeats itself. I was on the edge of my seat until the final pages of the book. I read a lot and I can honestly say that I was trying to figure out the conclusion right up to the very end. Can't wait to read more from this author.
This story line is amazingly well written. It felt as if I was sitting with the family during their discussion but also as if I were Charlotte and Tay. I felt the flashback style helped to pull me in and paired such a vivid picture that the book read as a movie would play in my mind. Well done Lexus!
Loved the characters. The storyline was great. You may have heard about forbidden marriages before but this is different and so real. Hope there is a sequel. Want to know more about Auntie and family. Don’t miss out getting this book.
This book was an amazing read! It pulled me in from the first few pages. The descriptions made you feel like you were truly there. The characters were so believable - whether you loved them or hated them. Buy and read this book....you will NOT be disappointed!
I absolutely LOVE this book. I couldn’t put it down. The author was so descriptive, that I could actually see the entire story unfold in my mind. As if it were a movie. I highly recommend this book. You won’t be disappointed. I’m looking forward to more books written by this author.
