Absolutely amazing movie. Wonderful job of portraying war (including the violence, sudden death, etc). The movie manages to convey the nobility of the soldiers it follows, while keeping them all too human, while showing how terrible war itself is. Aside from all of that, it has a terrific story, top notch acting, and probably the best production values and quality of any war movie ever made. I have no idea how they filmed much of this, but it was amazing.

Tom Hanks is awesome in this movie. The movie begins with WW II's historic D-Day invasion , then moves beyound the beach as the men embark on this dangerous mission. The mission is find a soldier name of Pvt. James Ryan, he is fighting out there and the army has no idea where he is. They have to go behind enemy lines to try and find him..They are trying to find him because his 3 brothers have been killed and he is the only living son. If any one is of age, you will remember all of the Sullivan boys were killed on one ship. This why this is taking place..Also, brothers are never all together to this day. The question is, "why are 8 men risking their lives to save one. Surrounded by the brutal realities of war, each man searches for his own answer -- and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage.
It is a very powerful movie. You see actual pictures through out this movie. You want to cry because of what all of our soldiers went through to keep us all free. Thanks to them I am free.

All that I am going to say is this is the war movie that changed it all. No more glossing over things or glorifying war. It really puts you on the front lines and makes you think about just how traumatizing combat must be. I really could feel the fear in my veins as I could hear the sounds of metal on metal as the huge Tiger tank began rounding the corner in one of the final scenes.
Being a huge WWII history buff, I was really watching the details closely. They really did a great job in using historically accurate props.
I highly recommend this film as a must see.

The title character is not actually the main character, that would be Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks). Spielberg's tribute to the Veteran's of WWII is based on facts, but not a factual story. The cast is a talented mix of actors Matt Damon, Edward Burns, Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Tom Sizemore, Barry Pepper to name names and by far not all off them. The film begins on D-Day and beyond but deals solely with the war and internal conflicts of American soldiers. It's a film based on reflection of the memories of Private James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon) in youth. It is an excellent film, but too much war for me. I respect the Veterans and grateful to all who have served, but it is hard for me to watch and find enjoyment. It is a good reminder of the REAL heroes of the world. I did not buy it for myself, but for my man-thing. :D The film and special features are subtitled in English for the deaf, thankfully

I didn't watch this movie until ten years after release, but to me, it was new and it captured my attention from start to finish. I watched it twice the first time, and still watching it at least four times a year. The first time , I cried, the second time I watched it I cried. Etc etc etc. ..LOL

If you want to have a clue what war is like, this is the one. You will never understand it really, but this one gets if pretty darn close.

This movie is an all-time instant classic! A great plot and plenty of action not just for the history buffs and war movie fans, but also for the casual audience. Ultimately, the final question would still be, "Is it worth sacrificing the lives of a few for the sake of one?"

This, of course, is an award-winning motion picture that can be described only in superlative terms. The realism is gripping and memorable. The graphic battle scenes show the horrors of war and the heroism of individuals in the midst of it. Tragedy and triumph ....... triumph and tragedy, are masterfully displayed. Mega kudos !
