How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

5.0 out of 5 starsSaved my bedroom wall socket
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 9, 2023
Purchased one for wall socket in my house to protect anything plugged in as well as the electrical in my home, which is 210. This winter an electric heater over heated the Tripp lite, burnt it out, but saved the wall socket from over heating. Cost for another Tripp minimal compared to having an electrician have to come in n replace socket n maybe wiring. I don't plug anything directly into the walls ever.

3.0 out of 5 starsSeller needs to improve the shipping packaging
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 20, 2023
This is an expensive surge protector that was mailed in a standard envelope, no protection at all. In my opinion the seller should have at least use a bubble bag to prevent any damage to the outlet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the Ultrablok428 I Thought I Was Getting
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 8, 2022
Color: WhitePattern Name: Power StripVerified Purchase
I searched for "Tripplite Ultrablok428" and what came up was something described as a "Tripp LIte Isobar Surge Protector. . . ." The picture even was of a Ultrablok428 and I got a flag that I had purchased this item several times before (which I had). Nothing told you that what I would be getting is the Isoblok 2-0. It looks identical and has the same joule rating. But the Tripp Lite site says the Ultrablok has "automatic shut-off" while the Isoblok doesn't. That means that if the unit fails because of repeated surges (as all metal oxide varister based units eventually do), the Ultablok will not pass power to your device while the Isoblok will. That is a critical difference and why the box describes the Ultrablok as a "premium" suppressor. This problem was caused the very frustrating failure of Amazon's search function to honor the search terms you enter and instead throw up anything remotely related to what you have entered, as well as the often use of inaccurate pictures. I put up one star to alert folks to this identification problem. But I do like Tripp Lite's stuff. It is generally of very good quality. But forget the Isoblok 2-0 and pay a few bucks more for the Ultrablok428.

1.0 out of 5 stars Update at 6 years: Second mechanical failure
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 1, 2018
Color: WhitePattern Name: Power StripVerified Purchase
Have had 3 of these in service for over a year. Work perfectly. After having a new microwave oven installed I inserted an isoblok 2-0 into the 3-prong outlet. The unit rotated in my hand as I inserted it into the outlet and sparks flew. One of the prongs fused to the metal casing. I received no shock. I believe the plastic insert/housing that is used simply failed mechanically. I encourage users to be sure to push this unit into the outlet with minimal rotation or angle. You might want to 'hand test for rotation' before placing this into an outlet. Received warranty replacement within 2 weeks. Happy so far.

Update May 2022:
A unit was installed in a quad box under the kitchen sink about 4 years ago and has worked flawlessly.. In May I needed to unplug this box from the female outlet.
Problem: the 'neutral' metal prong remained inside the female outlet while the 'hot' and ground prongs stayed with the unit. Turned the circuit breaker off. Safely removed the unit. Found two cracks in the material that hold the hot, neutral and ground prongs in this device. So disappointed in the mechanical failure. Electrically this seems to be an excellent product. I would suggest the OEM redesign this square holder to be much stronger. I've had two of these units fail over the years - in the same manner. I will no longer purchase this configuration. I have both 2 outlet and 6 outlet boxes in service and they are working perfectly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Direct plug in dangerous
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 19, 2017
Color: BlackPattern Name: Power StripVerified Purchase
The Tripp Lite direct plug in surge protector has a flaw. The plug is attached to the metal box with plastic. It easily loosens from the metal box. I had one that loosened enough that it shorted out, sparks, smoke and all. I am attaching pictures of the shorted out surge protector, what the early stages of a loosening plug looks like and the burn marks on my wall from the short out. I am also replacing all of my direct plug ins with the Isobar 2 surge protector strip with 6 foot cord.  Tripp Lite Isobar 2 Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip, 6ft Cord Right Angle Plug

In spite of the short out, the direct plug in still did protect my equipment, none of my expensive equipment was damaged. The wall outlet was also not damaged. The company was very responsive when I called and they were willing to back up the insurance and replace all of my equipment if it had been damaged. They will also replace any of the direct plug ins that have loose plugs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the premium price.

Got my first Tripp Lite for my first PC back in 1988. Have been using Tripp ever since. I was disappointed in both units I received. The first on out of the box had a fit-up problem with the retention tab. I had to tap it into place with a wooden mallet. The second unit rattled. Power strips/blocks should not rattle. I opened it up and a black piece fell out. I do not know where it should go in the unit or how to get it back in its place. Two for two of the units I bought had quality issues. This is not what a premium product should be. When there are simple quality issues like these what is the quality of the electronic component? Will they perform when needed? Its hard to say with apparent low quality standards. Photo shows blue arrow pointing to black piece that should be inside the Tripp Lite IsoBar

Update: Down graded from 2 to a 1. I contacted Tripp Lite and they sent me a replacement unit. The replacement also has a rattle inside it. The quality control must be non existent. D) NOT recommend Tripp Lite

1.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous and prone to breakage
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 4, 2022

I've always been a big fan of Tripp Lite products. I own a Tripp Lite UPS and several "Isobar" surge protectors from 4 to 10 outlets. All are excellent and have been in service for years with no problems.

This product, on the other hand, is an embarrassment to the company's reputation. I purchased two "Isobloks" in mid-2020, both are now broken after being plugged/ unplugged probably 5 times each. The male power connectors on both surge protectors have cracked into several pieces, and will likely pull out of the units themselves if I use them again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not protect the only electronic device connected and insurance claim denied.

I purchased this item to protect one of my home theater powered subwoofers. However, it appeared that this surge protective device failed to do so. I was utilizing the subwoofer when I experienced a power failure. After the electricity was restored, I immediately attempted to use the subwoofer. The subwoofer failed to power up. The unit's fuse was tested and found to be ok. I plugged the subwoofer into another outlet on a difference branch circuit. However, the subwoofer still did not power up. I submitted a claim to Tripp Lite. However, Tripp Lite failed to honor the insurance coverage. As a result, I terminated the use of all of my Tripp Lite products because of a lack of confidence.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fried itself after 18 months
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 1, 2019

I used this for my washer and dryer because I live in AZ where monsoon season lightning storms can cause power surges that damage advanced appliances with electronic controls. this seemed like an ideal solution for that. This weekend I was doing laundry and the dryer would not power on. I inspected the unit and it appeared to have worked itself away from the wall slightly. When I went to push it back into the wall, there was a pop and a flash and that was the end of that. Fortunately the circuit breaker did it's job, but now I have to shop for a replacement.

1.0 out of 5 stars Watch out, this unit has a serious safety issue
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 7, 2017

Watch out, this unit has a serious safety issue.

When my wife unplugged the power cord of her Dell XPS13 laptop from the ISOBLOK 2 the surge protector sparked and popped, singeing the surge protector, the outlet cover and blowing a circuit breaker. The spark was caused by the surge protector 3-pronged male plug separating from the metal housing. This happened even while holding the surge protector in place to prevent it from pulling out of the outlet. The attached pictures tell the whole story.

There is a metal bar on the surge protector designed to screw into the wall plate and hold the unit in place. This feature may work with standard wall plates but it will not work with Decora style plates.

As many have written the plug pulls out and short.
Scared the crap out of me.
Does a great job but the failed design is a flaw that I can’t let go without commenting.
I didn’t take a picture I just tossed it out.
I forgot it had a lifetime warranty.
Oh well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Looks good, but it’s dangerous trash

As others have noted, even with gentle, careful use, over time the plug for this unit pulls out of the box and exposes live wires. Do not waste your money buying this unit. If you bought this unit, do not use it. Ours is
now in the garbage, where it belongs.
