5.0 out of 5 starsSurprisingly easy to implement advices.
Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2023
This book tells you exactly how to achieve what the title says. It starts by introducing how the book came into existence then it gives a topic for each section about a problem people often face. Then a couple of chapters each section that gives one principle each. After the giving advice, he just talks about how it can be applied and examples for the rest of the chapter.

3.0 out of 5 starsMostly for the workplace, not how to have long lasting REAL friendships
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2013
Now, this book is not what I thought it would be. I thought this book was for people who just cannot communicate with people on a social level as in school or just out in the open. About making friends in general. Most of this book was about the workplace. Don't get me wrong, this book is pretty fantastic for the workplace. If you want a job, want a better job, want to be a good manager/leader, increase your connections, etc., this will help tremendously.

I started to get the hint when Carnegie most of the time brought up examples of tycoons and presidents, that this wasn't going to be a "How to make friends book". It starts off with the basic, say hello, say their names, pat them on the pat, eye contacting, and it goes on and on. Though I did find it amusing this one part where he suggested make time for people (which is very true when it comes to making friends), that he would just listen to a woman talk, and said he would pretend to be interested in what the woman was saying. I'm sure this falls into the workplace category and making an impression, as opposed to actually making a friend. If someone wanted to make a friend, why on earth would you pretend to be interested in what they are saying? Unless you are a guy trying to get into some woman's pants (or vice versa). Then he mentions how he took the time to talk to a boss for about an hour about his dog, and just listened. Then the boss gave him a free dog, or an offer to get a free dog. Then he says, "See look! I got something free just for listening to this rich guy for 1-2 hours!". He was showing that making time for others can be beneficial. Yeah well, I don't want peoples assets, I would like their FRIENDSHIP. Things like this, I just did not like in the book. I don't want to be fake.

The book however is well written. It's a bit repetitive though. Carnegie has a LOT of examples that are well written out from start to finish. But it can be a bit boring when you already understand what he's saying, and then you find out you still have some pages to go about something he's has already explained enough about.

This book is also NOT for the introverted or shy. I know this is the last thing the author may have thought about, but just to put this book in a different light, this is not for the ones who don't want to put themselves out there. First you have to evaluate your own self and be comfortable with yourself, as well as be confident. If you are not, read books about self-esteem, confidence, shyness, etc first before diving into this book IF you want to have a successful BUSINESS and be a good boss or leader.

Honestly to sum up this book : Be good to people, make time for them, ask questions and suggest things that would benefit another person rather than criticizing, do not insult others, smile, remember names, pretend to be interested in people (unless you really like them I guess).

When I get a job in the corporate world, I would definitely try to read this book again. Though his bold words at the end of each chapter, pretty much sum up what he says. He just has a lot of examples to show how effective his advice is.

This book is more for Workplace friends... the people you go to when you need a favor, then you don't talk to them until you need another favor!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Classic Guide to Developing People Skills in Your Professional and Daily Life
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2021

First published in 1936, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" is filled with advice that has stood the test of time. Technology continues to progress, but the human heart remains the same.

If you've ever wondered about what it would be like to get along with nearly everyone, this book will answer that question better than any other. The information that will help you develop excellent people skills, grew out of curiosity, experiments and research. So you could say it is even scientific.

After reading three or more different versions of this book, including the one for the digital age and updated versions, I must say that I think this first version is my favorite.

I still however continue to disagree with the advice to not let someone know when they have a source of a quote wrong. People have corrected me in the past and I've appreciated them helping me out! The quote in this book about nothing being good or bad - that it is your thinking that makes it so - is deceptively wrong. People know the difference between good and evil things. And Socrates saying he knew nothing...how did he know that then?

Otherwise I agree with everything else in this brilliant study on human nature. I have been testing out the advice in this book this week and wish more people would read this book and take it seriously when talking and dealing with me. I apparently am not so different than the regular human who enjoys a bit of appreciation and recognition. You will find you really relate to this book in dozens of ways. Read this book to find out how to get along with more people and to figure out what really makes you tick or ticks you off!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book With The Wrong Title
Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2022

Firstly, I feel the title diminishes what the book really is as it's more than a book on how to make friends, but how to a respected leader.

The book is broken into 4 parts, so I'll share my favorite principle from each part instead of attempting to summarize the whole book.

✅️ Part 1: Fundamental Techniques in Handling People

As humans, we all have the basic need of wanting to feel appreciated and feel what we're doing is important; so give praise and sincerely let your worker know they're appreciated.

✅️ Part 2: Six Ways to Make People Like you

Listen more often than you speak and remember people's names.

✅️ Part 3: How to Win People To You Way of Thinking

Show respect for the other person's perspective. They may be wrong, but in their mind, they're not. And there's a chance you're wrong as we all have bias. And when you are wrong, admit it.

✅️ Part 4: Be a Leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment

When leading people, there are going to be times when you are going to have to give critiques. So when doing so, start off with a compliment, like the "compliment sanwhich" concept. It's easier to listen to unpleasant things after we hear something good about ourselves.

The book could use an update with modern examples as this book was written in 1936, but essential reading for anyone in a leadership position (looking at you nurse managers 😂).

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent advices. Outdated way to explain them.

Dale Carnegie is often cited in many “social skill” books, so its one of the primary sources on this subject. Highly recommended.
However, this book may be challenging to read for some people because it was written decades ago, when not much hard data on this subject was available. So the book is full of anecdotic evidence, examples and stories of a friend of a friend. Not that this make the advice less truthful, but it often need to tell 3 stories before arriving to the idea.
If you have no problem with this writing style, then you will enjoy this book and learn some very valuable lessons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed but still worth it
Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2021

For how much this book comes recommended, I was honestly a little underwhelmed by it.

For starters, it's dated - not that that invalidates the principals and theories in itself, but the stories are older and some may find difficult to relate to. Each principal (30) is supported by several stories, which allows for natural breaks within the chapter (each being quite short); to some, this would make the stories feel less congruent.

Also, personally, I find that some of the principals are at-odds with the modern world. Specifically: avoid arguments, begin with praise and appreciation, and give feedback indirectly. Not that they are wrong wrong, but the context in which some of them are presented does not seem in tune with radical transparency that we have come to expect in today's world (beginning with praise and giving feedback indirectly read to me as "sugarcoat your messages").

All that said, although I had the temptation of dropping it down to a 3-star as I was writing this, it's still a 4-star book for me.

This book covers the lost art of how to communicate with people properly so that everyone wins. A win win is something that should always be appreciated and this book is a guide in how to always get them when dealing with human relations. You end up making people feel good about themselves and appreciated and you get what you want. It isn’t explicitly on how to get what you want but what makes people feel good and how you can use that in every day life.

4.0 out of 5 stars "In a nutshell"
Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2010

This is a really good book if you want to know how to get along with people. Unlike other reviews on this here some of this info can be used in personal relationships not just business.

The whole theme of this book is make this person feel important. Treat them how you would like to be treated. Be interested in them, do not condemn them.

I suggest reading this book with a highlighter and some flag post its. In the beginning they say you should read each chapter twice, but this book is way to boring to do so. It is a good book, but Dale uses way to many examples. BORING ONES! Which is why I rate this a 4 star not a 5.

This book can be written in about 150 or less pages if was not for those tedious examples. He uses about 3-5 examples each chapter making scream to your self SHUT UP I GET IT! So that is why I say use a high lighter. As you read threw all these examples a hint or two comes up on how to influence people and why. To bad he did not mention not to bore people.

Over all it is a good book, just to many examples. Luckily I did use a highlighter and flags to go back to the book when I need it.

And yes my relationship with people did grow. I use to be a guy that will cut people off while talking, argue till I am right pretty much the exact opposite of this book. Give people the upper hand when conversating with some one, do more listing than talking.

And that is it in nutshell.
