I love these. They couldn't be easier to use, and they feel very solid in my hands. I used to own the Bowflex Selectechs, and while I like them, I felt they were a bit long, sometimes making it awkward to balance. The Selectechs were also more expensive. This time around, I wanted to get something compact, easy to use and effective for doing dumbbell exercises with light to moderate weight. It was also important my wife was comfortable using them. The PowerBlocks delivered nicely, and I'm very happy with my purchase.
Whether you want to use them like a standard dumbbell, or want to take advantage of the extra handles for two handed exercises, the PowerBlocks couldn't be simpler. The padding around the handles are great for keeping your wrists comfortable as well. I also appreciate the 5 lb. increments, as some companies only offer 10 lbs between selections. On the flip side, some companies offer 2.5 lb, and that's nice, but I've never felt the need for that, personally. You might, so just be sure you research and get the ones that do.
The one area you need to really watch is where the pins attach to each designated weight. Just make sure they line up with the color coded weight, and all will be well. Even free weight dumbbells are sometimes put in the wrong place, and I've picked up a mixed-matched set, not realizing it until I wondered why I got so strong on one arm all of a sudden. The same is true for all other brands, so this is no knock on the product. Just be careful.
In hindsight, I should have bought the higher capacity PowerBlocks, with the ability to add on. However, this is my problem, and has nothing to do with the quality or effectiveness of this product. My wife will never use more than the weight on the Classics, so I may end up getting some dumbbell handles I can add Olympic plates to if I want to. Or, since I like these so much, I might just order the Elites for myself, and let me wife lay claim to the Classics.
Regardless of which PowerBlock product you choose, I think you'll be very happy with your purchase. I do not have the stand, but having something elevated for the sake of good ergonomics is nice, so you may want to consider one of those if you don't have a table or desk to place these on.
There are some nice alternatives to standard dumbbells out there, and having lifted free weights most of my life, I get just as effective a workout on dumbbell exercises on the adjustable products as I do with individual ones. I still believe separate dumbbells have their place, but they have a hard time competing with items that take up much less room and are way less expensive, when considering the weight ranges involved.
So, should you buy the PowerBlocks or the Selectechs, or anything similar, you'll have an effective way to train with dumbbells. For me personally, the Powerblocks are the best bang for buck ones out there, and I think you'll be quite happy with them too. I think I've said the word "happy" enough, so I leave you to your shopping, and I wish you luck and fun in building your home workout area!
