I am a history buff and also majored in history. When I was a kid, I watched every WWII movie that came on late night television. This is one I am pleased to have added to my ever growing collections of WWII movies.

Try to imagine WWII . . . no Internet, no computers and no smart phones. There weren't video cams on helmets or phone calls home and there were no concessions. The US military carries a long tradition of those who chose to continue against the odds. Merrill's Murderers is a WWII classic that personifies what can be accomplished. The portrayal of their last action in Burma is reasonably accurate and is more attentive to details, i.e. mules, rations, disease and Gen. Merrill's second heart attack. A, 'Well done,' to Hollywood on this one.
I chose to purchase instead of rent the 'instant video' because I knew from the reviews that this needed to be added to my collection. Technically? The streaming is smooth and the audio/visual quality is excellent. Definitely recommended!

Merrill's Marauders is a true story of Brig. General Frank Merrill, who is played by the wonderful actor Jeff Chandler. This was his last
role before he died in 1961 from complications from back surgery. He is sadly missed. He would have been one of the greatest male leads in history. He will never be replaced, and I think he was totally under rated as an actor. As Brig. Gen. Frank Merrill his assignment was to take his volunteer jungle fighters through Burma and to cut off the supply lines of the Japanese. These special forces were asked to do the impossible and yet they did it. They suffered from malaria, typhus, exhaustion, lack of food and ammunition and yet he was able to get these men to continue on. (A true test of a great leader in our military). The real Brig. Gen. Frank Merrill suffered a heart attack in this mission, but got these men to where they needed to be before he had to leave himself. Jeff Chandler plays a commanding role, one that you will never forget. He leads his men knowing that he has health problems and risks his own life. I think that Jeff Chandler played this Brig. General Merrill well and you will want to see this WWII film before it is gone. There are too many Jeff Chandler films we cannot get and need to get them to renew his films. You will see some familiar faces. Peter Brown, Ty Hardin,
Sugarfoot, Claude Aikens and Andrew Duggan. A must see. We can be proud of these men and Brig. General Frank Merrill.

"Merrill's Marauders" is a guilty pleasure. I enjoy military action movies--especially
WWII based ones. Yet Jeff Chandler as Merrill is at best a wooden actor--all strong
chin and no range. The supporting actors are much better though and the telling of
this famous story about the exploits of Merrill's unit in the CBI Theater in WWII
is enjoyable. I gave it 4 stars instead of 3 because of this. As in "Away All Boats"
another Chandler WWII drama, the movie is better than Chandler, who fits a
stereotype of a leader in WWII like John Wayne, but
can't act even up to what Wayne does in most of his WWII movies.

My cousin was in Merrill's Marauders. Yes, he fought in Burma. He received a Purple Heart and after years of service did a stint in the Pentagon. To my knowledge he watched this movie only once. Even in the years before graphic destruction like Saving Private Ryan, this movie shook my cousin to the core. He FELT everything, again.
I heard him discuss Burma with my brother-in-law who served as Green Beret in Vietnam. The decision was that the Japanesee in Burma were nastier than the Viet Cong. I must add a disclaimer here. I did not serve in either. This is based on first-hand hearsay. I am not trying to open a discussion on various wars or theaters. Both men went through hell and I thank them for their service.
The bottom line is that this movie is accurate and detailed enough to cause a vet a serious emotional reaction.
If you want to feel what that campaign was about, get this movie.
If you don't care or don't want to know, pass.

This was a joy to purchase. This was my father's unit in WWII, and I remember seeing this movie on TV when I was little. Since my father passed 5 years ago, I have been searching to find this movie. For anyone that is interested, my father was "Bullseye". He explained to me why named such. This movie depicted most of what happened during his tour. As anyone knows, not all movies show everything. Because of General Merrill's campaign, the men in his unit not only received various medals from the United States government, but many from Burma and China. Unfortunately, our home was robbed and all of my father's medals were stolen. We were able to replace those from our government, however those from China and Burma could never be replaced.

For anyone that is a WWII afficiando, or had a relative a part of this campaign, this movie is an excellent tribute to these men.
