Absolute trash, both then and now in 2020
Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2020
I was sadly permitted to watch (and rewatch countless times) this abhorrent excuse for a movie when I was a preteen. In a bout of nostalgia I rented and watched this now in my early 30s with a family of my own and I am horrified. To other reviewers who claim that those of us rating this movie poorly just don't "get it" - no, we just have well-formed consciences and know that just because a movie tries to be clever doesn't mean it isn't trash. What is amusing about 16-year olds having sex, using drugs, drinking alcohol, dressing like hookers and engaging in mean-girl nonsense? And alongside parents who don't give a fig and shirk their parenting duties? Yes, it is not lost on me that this is supposed to be a modern version of Jane Austen's Emma. Once again I say, just because a movie tries to be, and may actually be, clever, does not mean it is good or appropriate. It is absolute trash.
