Ok I am going to be honest here!!! It came to be in buble wrap with yellow tape that said observe precaution for handling.

It was in a product box. It could be a used product for all I know!!!

If you are purchasing this you want a secure product in a box. Not bubble wrap with a scan label telling you where to go for middle support.

This better be a functional secure item!! That is all I will say right now!!! As I am absolutely annoyed.

Mac users: be prepared for extra legwork

I bought this CAC reader because I was on an extended weekend and my command contacted me to tell me there were a few mandatory trainings on Navy E-Learning I would have to complete. Not wanting to spend hours at work dealing with death by slideshow or fighting for a computer, I took the plunge and got this SCM CAC reader with the intent of running it on a 2015 MacBook Pro with OS X El Capitan.

I could not, for the life of me, get this product to work in OS X without running a Windows emulator. Whether or not it's a problem with the Mac ecosystem or the drivers for this particular product, I don't know, but thus was my experience. OS X will correctly identify this card reader upon plugin, but any attempt to use your PKI certificates are met with page errors on Navy sites. It didn't matter if I was running Safari, Chrome, or Firefox or whether I ran Safari "Debug Mode" to simulate Internet Explorer. Each attempt, on numerous sites, were met with error messages telling me to contact my nearest RAPIDS office as, surely, there was a problem with my card and not the reader.

By contrast, on Windows 10, this thing was 100% plug-and-play. Drivers were automatically installed and no third-party client was required to work.

For those of you who run OS X and don't want to feel like you're being punished for leaving the Windows world, I apologize. It seems that you will have to either use this with a Windows machine or run a Windows emulator within OS X. Luckily, Parallels Desktop did a phenomenal job of this and I was able to make this CAC reader work flawlessly once I had it installed. PRO TIP: If you go the Parallels Desktop route, leave Coherence Mode BEFORE you plug in the card reader and let the Windows Em install your drivers from within the Windows OS..."window." Afterwards, this card reader should work just fine, regardless of whether you choose to run in Coherence Mode or not. Another free alternative would be VirtualBox, but either will require you to have a working ISO or disc version of Windows.

Long story short, I docked this reader a star simply because of the extra hassle involved in trying to make it work with OS X. Windows users will have a practically seamless experience with this unit and it's no surprise to me as to why my command uses these for all our work desktop machines.

Cheap, but packs a punch

I'm amazed at how cheap this thing was, yet it does what any CAC reader would do. Out of the bag, it seems to have worked on a few sites. I was able to access MyPay with no problems, and I tried the AKO website because other people had mentioned it on reviews here, that worked as well. The one thing I cared for most however, did not work. I tried to get onto the Air Force portal and it kept giving me CAC errors. Through some patience with militarycac.com (which ultimately did nothing for me) and the suggested websites from the AF portal error, I was able to get it working. Now I can access all my military email and sites from the comfort of my home. Definitely worth every penny and would recommend to others.

The cord is about 3-4ft long. The reader itself is not very sturdy, if you tried you could probably break it with ease. I imagine that if you dropped it and stepped on it by accident it would break too, but you're not that clumsy are you? All in all, good product.

May need to download a driver to use Windows 10, with PIV card

Unlike others who have said this was 'plug and play', it definitely wasn't for me, when trying to use with Windows 10, with IE or Edge, to access USDA sites via eAuth portal. eAuth gave me error messages to the effect that certificate not found. No instructions came with the card reader, which was annoying. However, there was a sticker with the packaging that provided a website for the seller, and a discount code for software. On that website, I finally found a link to download a driver for Windows 10 and suggestions to use Internet Explorer. Once I did that, I was finally able to connect, with IE browser. Just started using it, so no experience with durability. 3 stars due to sketchy communications about how to use.

Bought this for my son. It was easy plug and play device that hooked to his lap top. I thought this device was going to be pricey but it was reasonably priced. I don’t know if it’s durable but it appears well made. Although I was expecting something metal and not plastic.

Excellent CAC reader for all of us working remotely. I just leave my card in the reader at my desk and have had no issues with it not reading or hurting my card. The install was fast and automatic the first time I plugged it in and had no trouble reading my card for the first time. The material does feel a bit flimsy, so I'm not sure how long it will last, but no problems a few weeks in. A good buy for the cost!
