How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

This adapter works perfectly well as advertised, but with two exceptions: one minor and one .. rather major.

First, the minor: the lens sits in the adapter rather loosely. There's maybe half a millimeter or so of wiggle room when it's sitting in there. Not a big deal, but not confidence-building.

Second, the dealkiller: the release trigger on this adapter (the button you push to release the lens from the mount) is on the side of the barrel and is placed such that it's easy -- trivial, even -- to release.

How do I know this? I rented a Voigtlander 50/1.1 lens a few months ago. It's a ~$1k lens. On the way in to my office, I must have (i assume?) brushed against the adapter release in the wrong way, and watched in horror as the lens tumbled 4 feet to the pavement. I had to pay $800 to buy it from the rental company, and I'm still trying to find out if I can get it repaired. Looks like it's gonna cost me around $300 min.

I was willing to admit I made some error the first time around with the 50mm, so this afternoon, I put my new voigtlander 35/2.5 on it. On the way home from a brief photo expedition, walking to my house, I realized that this lens also, yet again, was sitting in the adapter, not "clicked" in, and around 1mm from freefalling to the pavement.

I am not sure if my adapter is broken in some way or if this is a general defect, but I won't be giving it the benefit of the doubt any longer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works Perfectly

I bought the Fotodiox adapter in order to use my vintage leica M lenses on my Sony nex 5 camera. So far it works perfectly. The build quality is great, it fits perfectly all lenses I have tried and I haven't experience any focusing issues at all. The only "negative" is that the release knob is rather big and can be uncomfortable for your fingers holding the grip. Nevertheless I would recommend it over the most expensive german and japanese adapters. It gets the job done and multiplies the creative possibilities of the Nex camera system.

Fotodiox products are well crafted and reliable. The company stands behind them, in my experience. This mount fits and works perfectly. No problem focusing to infinity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fits but very tight

My M-Summicron 35mm fit, and the ring fits my a6000 body BUT it was very tight. In fact, I can not get the lens off the adapter now. The combination does detach from the body OK.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very limited focal range
Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2010

I used this adapter to mount a Voightlander 15mm 4.5 II to the Nex 5. The normal close focusing distance for this lens is 18 inches. With the Fotodiox adapter the lens will only focus to 3.5 feet when set to minimum focal distance. Also the infinity focus is reached at 4 feet on the focus scale, far from the infinity position. I did not expect perfect alignment, however this adapter does not come close to allowing the potential of such a great lens. The delivery was fast, the quality of construction materials looks good, and the fit is tight, no wobble at all. Have not seen other users of adapters for this lens report the problem with very limited focal range.

I use this adapter with my Nex-5 that I bought on december 3, 010. I am going today for 1500 photos. I normally use 2 Leica's, M3 and M6 TTL. For personal reasons I don't really like the M8's nor the M9.
This adapter gave me the opportunity to enter in digital photography with all the fine lenses I purchased over the years: Summarit 5 cm f/1.5; Leitz Hector 13.5 cm f/4.5; VC 15mm f/4.5 (1st version, need adapter); VC 35mm f/1.4 S.C.; Leica Noctilux 50mm f/1 and VC 90mm f/3.5 Apo Lanthar. I tried them all and was able to obtain a very critical focus without any problem. The manual focus assist of the camera definitely helps, but, without the lens been properly aligned by the adapter, focusing could be complicate. The images I am obtaining are very pleasing, the focus is excellent with them all. I did not experience difficulties with the VC 15mm as related by another customer. Could be the 1st version of the lens? If you are used to manual focusing this adapter is a little gem. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin

I bought a cheap converter before this one - picked it up on eBay for a tenner. It immediately jammed itself into the camera and took force, a pair of pliers and an unreasonable amount of grief to remove. Luckily I didn't damage the camera mount itself.

Then I bought the Fotodiox adapter and it shipped super quickly and works like a charm. It fits solidly and there is no play or light leak. My only gripe is that some lenses screw in and tighten all the way upside down so the focus range markings and aperture markings are out of sight. It isn't a major issue but it is slightly annoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Treat it with care and it will work

This inexpensive adapter works as well as the really expensive ones but one does need to treat it with care when attaching and detaching lenses to it and it to the NEX body. Then again, my Leica M and Voightlander lenses are ALWAYS treated with even greater care. Surprisingly, there really wasn't that much difference by f 5.6 between the Voightlander, Leica and the Sony kit and zoom lenses on the 14 MP NEX 5 but I really noticed the difference with the 24 MP NEX 7! However, the 16 MP NEX5n is better for my 12mm, 15mm, 21mm, 24mm Voightlander lenses (all on M mounts) on the image edges due to the wide angles of light on the microlenses of the sensor. My 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, 90mm and 135mm Leica lenses love the NEX7!!! I must admit that I can hardly wait for a full frame Sony NEX ??

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the same as I received...

Interestingly, the product I received doesn't match the photos. It seems my model is a close focusing adaptor which actually has a separate focusing ring, moving the lens away from the sensor to allow macro focusing. I'm pleasantly surprised, as it works great with my Voigtlander nokton 40mm. No light leaks. However the mechanism is a little loose, especially when in close-focus mode. Adaptor fits VERY tight, but seems to be loosening a little with use. Also a little silicone oil around the mechanism, easily cleaned but still disconcerting. So 4 stars.
