5.0 out of 5 starsThe Perfect Matchmaker
Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2017
To take the best of digital cameras and mate it with the best parts about shooting film, for me, being able to use my wonderful Minolta Rokkor lenses on my beautiful Sony NEX-6 was the perfect mating of digital and analog. I love the buttery smooth feel of a Minolta MD lens in my hands, and the results when paired with a Sony digital is wonderful. The balance is great, the feel is just about perfect, and the results are fantastic.

The Fotodiox is one of the less costly MD to E-mount adapters out there, and it's very well made. A good quality piece, connects two very quality components and makes one heckuva digital mirrorless setup. Considering I have into all 8 of my Minolta prime lenses less than half the cost of one prime Zeiss E-mount lens (and the Minolta glass is widely loved), the cost of converting to manual lenses is worth it.

I'll be looking at adding a Fotodiox Pentax K-mount adapter in the future to be able to use the rest of my Pentax SMCs on the Sony, as well. Couldn't be happier with the results. For ~$22, you can't beat it.

1.0 out of 5 starsDoes *NOT* work on Sony A7 series cameras
Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2015
This title is WRONG. Does *NOT* mount to Sony a7 series cameras. Does not work on my a7S. Tried two of them. I ordered the first, and when I went to put the MD lens on that I wanted to use, it doesn't even turn/fit on the a7S. Thought maybe it was a mistake, ordered a replacement, still does not work, still cannot use my lens. Expectations not met.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works Great on Sony A7. Mostly works great with MC lenses

Adapter clicks right into the Sony A7 with no issues at all. I am using it with a Minolta 58mm !.2 lens, and once the adapter is on, it works amazingly well. There is almost no wiggle, and it fits very nicely. A few small issues, though:

1) The red dot on the MC lenses do not line up with the dot on the adapter. You have to put it on at a different place.

2) The adapter can get a little stuck on the lens and needs a bit of help to get it off. This is not a massive issue for me, because this is the only Minolta lens I will be using with it. But, if I had several, it would be a bit of a hassle to stick something inside the adapter to push a little bit of metal back to allow the lens to detach.

Overall, great adapter, though. Focuses to infinity very well, and I used it all day at a wedding yesterday with no issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good!

This adapter is made 100% of metal and came with a tripod mount as shown in the pictures (also made of metal). It works perfectly to convert Minolta MD lenses to my Sony NEX 5N. It may not be evident in the pictures, but the tripod mount is fairly sturdy. It is attached with two screws as mentioned in another review but they are securely fastened and all the parts ARE metal. I have a 75-300mm f/5.6 zoom lens in the MD mount that is pretty chunky, and the tripod mount supports it and the camera quite adequately. That's about the limit though. With a heavier lens, a lens collar would be better.

Based on this purchase I will not hesitate to purchase other Fotodiox adapters for my NEX. Canon FD mount is coming up next!

I use this with my Sony A6000 and a Minolta 400mm lens and it works great. No issues with the mount being too loose/tight. It goes on like a normal Sony lens and its not all floppy if i hold the camera without supporting the lens. Seems well built, it’s all metal and I haven’t had any issues like paint flaking off. I’ll update this if I run into any problems after using it for awhile but so far so good.

This thing rules. I got a Minolta srt102 with a 50mm 1.4 on it at an antique store, then bought this adapter to use the lens on my A7RII. It works perfectly. You don’t have to shoot crop with this adapter. I get to use the fastest lens I own, on my digital camera body for less than $20. Incredible. Can’t recommend enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Minolta, Meet Sony. Play Nicely Together. :-)
Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2013

With a bunch of lovely old Minolta MD mount lenses, no desire to dump them, and a new Sony NEX-5, what was I to do? The Fotodiox adapter provides a handy answer. It's sturdy and well-machined with good, solid mountings on both sides. I can bung my 1970s 'long toms' on the Sony without being concerned that there'll be damage to the mounts through torsion. However the Fotodiox adapter has a tripod mount to move the COG forward and thereby somewhat reduce the stresses.

This being said, the tripod mount gets in the way of some of the apparatus on the lenses themselves — in one case disabling the aperture ring. It's for this one reason that the adapter isn't getting five stars. I tried to unscrew the tripod mount but I think the screws are painted in. So, buyer take note; if your old MD mount lenses have aperture levers and so on near the mount, this may be a problem.

With all that being as it is, though, this is an excellent adapter and I thoroughly recommend it for breathing life into your old glass. I've had some *excellent* results with MD mount lenses on the NEX-5 and I hope you do too. ****

5.0 out of 5 stars Minolta MD to Sony Nex Lens Adapter by Fotodiox
Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2012

After buying a similar adapter that only worked with aftermarket lenses but not with original Minolta lenses, I decided to try this one from Fotodiox in Waukegan, Illinois, available through Amazon. It arrived in very good time, was exactly as shown, and fit all my lenses perfectly, both Minolta and non-Minolta lenses made for Minolta. In addition, the compatibility of the lenses with the Sony NEX series body was very good. The lenses perform just as well as they did with 35mm SLR bodies in terms of image resolution and coverage area. Due to the smaller size of the Sony camera, the balance between the larger zooms and telephoto lenses is not really as good as it was with the more substantial older cameras, but this adapter works extremely well with the more normal size lenses, such as fixed focal length of 100mm or less.

3.0 out of 5 stars that dictate that the price point is much better for the fotodiox

So here is the question. Does this work well enough to buy instead of the more expensive Metabones adapter. After having this one for about 6 months, and having recently rented the Metabones, testing shows, NO, emphatically. I have seen enough video comparisons of the two, that dictate that the price point is much better for the fotodiox, and hence, the reason I purchased it. Well, let me tell you my tale. I have some Canon, Sigma and Tamron glass. The only lens that worked well was my stovepipe! The awesome Canon 70-200 2.8. Focusing wasn't drop dead quick, but it focused. My favorite lens, the Canon 50 1.4, didn't even focus. I also have a Sigma 17-50 2.8. The camera would actually shut down! Yes, shut down. So, I just rented the Metabones, and I believe they recently updated it, but with this rental, I don't know if that was done or not. EVERY lens works on it. As with any adapters, there is some quirkiness, like needing to take the lens and adapter off, and then mounting the new lens. So, if you have a Sony body and other brand glass, and you can afford the additional $300, then get the Metabones, NOW. That is a steep price difference, but cmon man. You spent a lot on that Canon glass or whatever you have, and why let it go to waste or needing to manual focus only. Now, if you want to take action shots with your Sony, get Sony glass. I don't know that the Metabones will offer fast enough auto focus for action shots. Haven't tried that yet.

Found an old Minolta 50mm f1.4 with no damage or fungus for $8 at a thrift store! Paired it with this adapter and the lens is inspiring on my Sony A7 ii. The mount itself is solid. I wish it came with a rear nex mount lens cap, but none-the-less, it's resurrected this lens into something I'm going to be using a lot. Note, this is a dumb adapter: it won't do any fancy auto-focus or auto-aperture. My lens is fully manual anyway so it doesn't matter, but it might be important to some.
