Great scale

I am buying this to replace an Ozeri scale. This one lacks the ability to do milliliters, but aside from that I love this scale so much more. The display is bright and easy to read. Best of all NO "FAKE" BUTTONS! I don't know the term for it, but my old scale had buttons with no real feel; you just put your finger on it and it does its thing. This scales buttons actually press and make a nice tactile click. I hated the "electronic" buttons because half the time the !@#% thing didn't register it.

I could do without the beeping, but that is not hard to disable if you have a modicum of handiness. Oh, and I also like how the scale platform is defined rather than those other kitchen scales where the platform and the interface/LCD are in one smooth piece. No question about whether or not something is too close to the controls to not be registering.

The only things I wish it had were 1. a larger scale platform and 2. detatchable display. #1 is easily mitigated by putting a larger object on the sale then zeroing it and using the object as the platform. For #2, I want remote display so a large bowl doesn't hide the numbers. Again, that's easily mitigated by putting an object on the platform and zeroing then putting bowl on object. Spaces it out for better visibility. So my complaints are easily mitigated, just would be nice if those features were built in.

Swapped power supply with inconvenient plug orientation in larger & bulky package

I was disappointed to have been sent a bulkier, horizontally aligned power adapter that is not the same as what appears in the product picture. I know which power adapter is supposed to come with the scale because I already have one from a previous purchase of the same scale.

This one sent to me has prongs that are rotated 90 degrees (compared to picture). The tail of the plastic plug hangs over adjacent power receptacle due to this change in orientation. So, it can only be plugged into the end of a power strip without covering other plugs.

One star due to perception of deceitful product fulfillment.

For coffee lovers concerned about the accuracy of .5 gram vs. .1 grams in other machines: I just want to put your mind at rest, because that was the only potential downside of this machine. But I measured and found the average weight of a single bean to be .22 grams, so if you're concerned about precision down to one coffee bean, I guess you're more exacting than me. What sold me and what I love about this machine is a) it will measure in ounces as well as grams (so it can be used for cooking and postal duties), it has an AC adapter if you prefer that over batteries, and the maximum weight is higher than some (4000 grams, 141 ounces, which is over 8 pounds). I am 100% happy with this thing.

Makes the best hamburger patty press! Yes, I know it's a scale...

Okay, so I bought this to weigh out food. It works great for that! But one day I was weighing out some hamburger I bought to make into patties and I discovered a great use for the lid.

I make 1/3lb hamburger patties but finding a good press for them has been like looking for the Ark of the Covenant - even Indiana Jones struggled with that one!

Note: This will work for any size patties.

I was looking around the kitchen for the millionth time for something round that I could use as a press when I looked down at the lid for this scale. No, it's not round but....

Place a rounded ball of hamburger on a piece of wax paper, cover it with a 2nd piece of paper and then INVERT THE SCALE COVER and place it over the top wax paper sheet.

Look closely and you'll see a small circle in the very center of the lid, it may also have a tiny piece of plastic (a little nub) from where it was formed in the die at the factory.

Center that little circle on the center of your hamburger patty and press down evenly.

Keep pressing until the patty reaches the edges of the lid and voila'! You'd got a perfectly formed patty and it's easily repeatable!!

The key is to maintain equal pressure on the lid while pressing down.

You can thank me later. :)

BTW, great as a scale as well - accurate and the zero function works perfectly.

Old one was durable but new one isn't as accurate

We've owned two of these in the past 15 years. I bought the first one around 15 years ago and it finally died about six months ago. It was accurate and reliable. We purchased another one about six months ago but the new one isn't as accurate. It cannot measure below 1 gram. Above 1 gram the scale is able to measure in 0.5 gram increments but below 1 gram it does not register (meaning it does not show 0.5 gram on the scale) even if you slowly add more weight (it will all of a sudden jump to 2 gram even when you add gradually). The new one is also a lot louder and I haven't figured out how to make it quieter.

This scale is great over the short term

This scale is great over the short term. After using the scale for nearly a year, I can't recommend it. The scale goes through batteries much, much faster than any other scale I have owned. It almost immediately tells me that the brand new batteries I have added are low. I can baby them along for a few months, but I shouldn't have to change the batteries in my scale every 3 months when I only use it 2-3 times a week. I tried using rechargable batteries, but it was much too picky about the batteries for that to work. Finally, I tried to use the AC adapter that came with the scale. That wouldn't reliably power the scale either. Maybe I got a bad unit but given that many of these complaints are consistent with other owners I would look elsewhere for a scale. It is lightweight and accurate and easy to use. The problem is I need a dependable scale and this is not it.

Decent Scale after Rocky Start

I originally gave it 1 star since every household item I measured that was supposed to be of a certain weight was off by 20% or so. I dug into the manual and it suggested I needed 4000 grams weight to calibrate. Great, so I need to buy calibration weights just to make this device accurate?

Luckily, I came across a blog that suggested using the US mint website and get cent, dime, quarter and dollar coins, since they are made to exacting standards. The scale has a lag, but it was fairly accurate, let's say off by 1-2%, as opposed to 20% on packaged goods (my error was not to factor in the weight of the container or packaging, as the weight on most products references only the content).

I made pour over coffee, and it works great, except for the annoying sound whenever you press any button.
If not for the lag, and if there was an easier way to calibrate without purchasing 4000 grams (4 kilograms) calibration weight, I'd give it 5 stars.

For 28 bucks, it's a decent scale for making coffee, but I won't use it to sell the family jewels.

Great scale I’ve used for years

This is my favorite kitchen scale. I use it for coffee (pour-over) every day as well as for measuring ingredients in baking and sometimes cooking.
It’s fast enough to measure and very clearly readable making it a great choice for pour over. It can be accurate up to 4000g which is also usually more than enough for measuring flower/sugar etc in large bowls for baking. It really hits the sweet spot that can do everything well (besides espresso).

I’ve had no real issues with it over the years I’ve been using it though I will note a couple things. After a year or so my backlight stopped working. Not a huge deal but made it hard to real in dim light, I contacted Jennings and they sent me a replacement for free. My new one works perfectly.

Secondly, some reviews mention weight changing by several grams if you leave things sitting on it. I do have this issue but only when brewing coffee on it. I’m fairly sure it’s related to the heat on the scale but it’s negligible for even 5-10g difference at the end of a pour over. When measuring out the coffee to begin with I don’t notice a weight shift.

So while the scale is by no means perfect it’s imo the best option in this price range and easily worth the premium over many of the much cheaper scales you can find in the $10 price range.

The Numbers Don't Lie Niether Does This Scale

I recently started trying to be healthy and a part of being healthy is portion control in every aspect of eating that is possible. After scanning through the many different food scales I decided to settle on this Jennings CJ4000 x 0.5g Digital Scale. Also this scale was recommended by a site "The WireCutter", a site that I actually have bought quit a few electronics based off of their recommendations and have never been disappointed. I'm glad I made the choice of purchasing this scale. I forgot to mentioned that this is actually my 2nd time purchasing this scale, I accidentally had left the scale on top of the toaster and cooked something inside of the toaster and it melted the bottom of the scale lol. Yes I know I'm very absent minded. But anyways back to the scale.

Pros:
Very accurate
Simple to use
Allows the option of using batteries or plugging it in
Has a nice backlight in case you're not in a well lit area
Has many options to convert foods to oz., lb., grams ETC

CONS:
Why didn't I find this scale sooner!!!!

OVERALL:
Its a great scale, because if you're like me and are seeking this to assist with weight loss or portion control its a great tool and makes me feel like I'm a professional of culinary lol. You won't be disappointed with this purchased. Trust me I went with a cheaper scale and I returned it the same day. This scale is has help me develop accountability for everything I cook because the numbers don't lie. I'm a real reviewer that used my own hard earn money to purchase this scale. Good for food quantities, not pharma

I'm not measuring pharmaceuticals, so the half gram error (or more?) for coffee or other foods doesn't bother me much. If I measure 25 grams of coffee beans, or 27, I'm not sure the teaspoons or one tablespoon is detectable. I might use a spoon measure for yeast or other leavening, instead. In the morning, I'm as likely to Tare the scale for a predictable amount of milk, and do it again to measure the coffee beans before grinding.

It's easy to change settings, and it cycles to off quickly enough to save batteries. The cover/scoop is an awkward shape, and the dispensing lip is useless (I just dump from the top left of the round).

It doesn't win awards for user-friendliness, but is utilitarian, and Tare, of course, saves time. Figure out why you want it.
