Confused about all the different versions of Dixit? I've compiled a list of all the different versions. Please mark the review as helpful so others are more likely to see it!

About Dixit in General:
Dixit is a game about creativity, subtlety, storytelling, and whimsical art. While there technically is a winner in games of Dixit, it shouldn't be approached as a competitive game. Most people tend to either love it or hate it. Gamers focused on strategy, tactics, winning or literal minded people are less likely to enjoy the game than creative people, artists, or those comfortable with metaphors.

About the Different Versions:
Asmodee did a really good job of making the different versions of Dixit as confusing as possible. All versions of Dixit use the same card size and have the same card back so they are all compatible with each other. Here is what I was able to figure to the best of my knowledge:
There are 7 sets: Dixit, Dixit Odyssey, Dixit Quest (Dixit 2), Dixit Journey (Dixit 3), Dixit Origins (Dixit 4), Dixit Daydreams (Dixit 5), and Dixit Memories (Dixit 6).
Dixit Jinx is a totally separate game with square shaped cards.

Dixit
US name: Dixit
Euro name: Dixit
Artist: Marie Cardouat
Standalone game that comes with 84 cards and everything you need to play with up to 6 players. There are several different printings.
The older version, also called Dixit (International Rules Version), comes with a scoring track built into the box and space to hold the 84 cards. It can be identified with a German Game of the Year icon on the front of the box.
The newer version, Dixit, being printed since 2012, comes with a foldable scoring track that is less cute but more functional than the scoring track in the old/international version and space to hold 336 cards (Dixit's 84 cards plus 3 other sets). It can be identified by the word "Family" on the front of the box.

Dixit Quest Board Game
US name: Dixit Quest
Euro name: Dixit 2
Artist: Marie Cardouat
Dixit Quest is an expansion that comes with 84 cards. A standalone version of the game (Dixit, Dixit Odyssey, or Dixit Journey) is required to play.

Dixit: Odyssey
Dixit Odyssey Expansion Game
US name: Dixit Odyssey
Euro name: Dixit Odyssey
Artists: drawn by Piero colored by Marie Cardouat
Available as both a standalone version and an expansion. Both come with the same 84 cards but the standalone version also comes with everything you need to play with up to 12 players.

Dixit Journey
US name: Dixit Journey
Euro name: Dixit 3
Artist: Xavier Collette
Dixit Journey is a standalone set that comes with 84 cards and everything you need to play with up to 6 players. Older printings of Dixit Journey came with pawn shaped tokens and space in the box to store 84 cards. Newer printings of Dixit Journey come with bunny shaped tokens and space in the box to store 336 cards (Dixit Journey's 84 cards plus 3 other sets).
The European version, called Dixit, 3 is an expansion with just the cards from Dixit Journey.

Dixit Origins
US name: Dixit Origins
Euro name: Dixit 4
Artist: Clement Lefevre
Dixit Origins is an expansion that comes with 84 cards. A standalone version of the game (Dixit, Dixit Odyssey, or Dixit Journey) is required to play.

Dixit Daydreams
US name: Dixit Daydreams
Euro name: Dixit 5 Daydreams
Artist: Franck Dion
Dixit Daydreams is an expansion that comes with 84 cards. A standalone version of the game (Dixit, Dixit Odyssey, or Dixit Journey) is required to play.

Dixit Memories Board Game
US name: Dixit Memories
Euro name: Dixit 6: Memories
Artist: Carine Hinder and Jérôme Pélissier
Dixit Memories is an expansion that comes with 84 cards. A standalone version of the game (Dixit, Dixit Odyssey, or Dixit Journey) is required to play.

Dixit Jinx Card Game
US name: Dixit Jinx
Euro name: Dixit Jinx
Artist: Dominique Ehrhard
Dixit Jinx is a standalone game that is totally separate from the other versions of Dixit. It comes with 71 double-sided square cards with simple abstract images, plus 9 selection cards. It's a quicker game, and while there are some similarities in the mechanics with one player picking a card and other players guessing which one based on a clue, it is still quite different.

This Version Compared to Other Versions:
Originally I bought plain Dixit (the older pre-2012 printing), and while I loved the game concept and mechanics, I was really disappointed with the design of the board. While that board was cute and whimsical, the little stepping stones that represented movement spaces were way too small to accommodate more than a couple player tokens at a time despite the game supporting six players. The problem was compounded by the bunny shaped player tokens which are poorly balanced and have a tendency to fall on their face when moving them.

This standalone version of Dixit Odyssey supports 12 players instead of 6. The board was redesigned to be more functional, albeit less whimsical. The bunny tokens were redesigned to be more stable. Scoring has been simplified by utilizing numbers along the board and a voting card rather than voting chits, plus some optional alternative scoring rules are included that change the game up so that everyone guesses every round as well as introduces a second guessing mechanic.

Great game. Easy to understand and get the hang of especially once you play a couple of rounds. Everyone always seems to like this game, though some people are not very good at it because it requires some creativity. We own this Dixit as well as the original, Dixit (Cover Art May Vary) and this is the better version to own because this version allows for up to 12 players, and the original only allows 6. Other than that the differences are: the board in this version has to have more places to count points for a larger group so the scoring is not printed on the board, like in the original, and it comes with a different deck of cards, which we like more than the deck that comes with the original. This game also has instructions that detail a number of ways you can play the game to accommodate more people. We have not played these other versions of the game, but it's nice to know there are different options to make game play with 12 people possible.

We recently played this game at a friends' house (8 people altogether), and it was so much fun!!! So, we bought one ourselves. It does stimulate imagination, abstract thinking, the skill of analogies, and creativity. I am a little skeptical about how much fun it would be with 3-5 people, but who knows.

Update, a few months later: The game continues to be fun, so much so that we even bought the extension pack. Just yesterday we had the opportunity to play with 3 people only (all adults), and it was pretty disappointing at first - it all came down to guessing between 2 cards, and there was practically no suspense or challenge. We were about the quit when one of us came up with the idea of having each person hold 7 cards and play 2 cards per turn, including the storyteller, who had to put down a "primary" and a "secondary" card (we had to guess the primary to get points, but s/he got points for his/her secondary if it was guessed too). This changed the incentives and choice-making and guessing dynamics dramatically, and it made the whole thing much more tricky (more strategy involved), but it was fun!

Best Choice for Game Night with those friends and families that have their own "personal dialect".
Those people who you can talk in "secret code" riddled with "inside jokes" and "references"?
Yeah, this is the game for all of that.
Give clues that only one or two of your friends will understand and leave the other players scratching their head.
===
It is slightly different in mechanics, but similar in "feel" to the game Apples-to-Apples.
The fanciful illustrated cards look like they came from the same imagination that could come up with "Alice and Wonderland".
===
Example of a round:
The "clue giver" for the round says the word "Marbles", all the players will then discretely choose an illustrated card from their hand that could match with the clue "Marbles" (in hopes to throw the other players off of the clue givers trail), once everyone (including the clue giver) has turned in a card (face-down) for the clue "Marbles" the clue giver will then shuffle the cards and reveal them.
Card 1: Has planets, which "sorta look like marbles on black velvet"
Card 2: Has a crystal ball, which is "sorta like a large marble"
Card 3: Has an orange cat looking out of a paper bag?
Card 4: Has a brain in a jar, "someone lost their marbles"?
Everyone (except the clue giver) discretely votes on a card that they think is the Clue Givers actual card.
Player A: votes for Card 2
Player B: votes for Card 1
Player C: is the clue giver and does not vote.
Player D: votes for Card 3
Once all the players reveals their votes, the clue giver reveals that their card is Card 3!
"WHAT?!" shouts player A and B.
Player D explains, "Haha, Player C owns an orange cat named Marbles! And he loves paper bags!"
Therefore Player C and D gain 3 points!

This game is fantastic! I don't have the patience to sit through long, complicated explanations of rules with most games, but this one is simple and the images on the cards are fascinating and beautiful. I've dragged friends into playing who then want to buy the game after ten minutes--this is how I ended up purchasing it, by the way; via someone cajoling me to play, and I loved it so much that I got it and now the entire household loves it. It's appropriate for many, many ages, large or small groups, and is fascinating to play with people you know well, because your guesses are affected by what you intuit about the other players' mental process. It's not educational per se, but for kids, it's a great way to gauge interpersonal reactions, state of mind of other people, analogies, metaphors, what art means to different people, and the game also requires every player to shift the way they think - which is a great equalizer for pretty much any group of people. It's not possible for a player to be "wrong" and embarassed, and a child's age is not a handicap even when playing with adults (which we discovered when playing the game with four adults and my 14-year-old son). Come to think of it, this is a game that a group of people of extremely mixed mental ability could play quite happily.

Rules that aren't official but useful: no inside jokes (unless everyone playing knows the joke), no references so obscure only a few people present will "get it," and no jargon.

Get it. Play it. Have fun.

The product photo shows the box as an English edition of the game - it is NOT! You can download the directions in English from the manufacturer's website for free, but realize this edition is NOT in English!

Great game, but this is the German Language edition, just so you're aware.

Amazon doesn't care enough to fix or update the listing, and there's no information on this page other than Origin: Germany in the product details. I'm bumping it a star because the picture doesn't show the German text on the front of the box, making you think this might be the standard English version.

It's not.

So many great reviews for the Dixit line of games. It's definitely a different type of game that the whole family can enjoy, but it gets old fairly quickly. I purchased one expansion with it, and it's a good thing. The more cards, the longer the game will feel new. I can't see it becoming a regular game in our rotation though. The art is really cool though.

Our group had played this game and the owner wanted it back so I had to buy it. We play it when we have 8 to 10 players show up for game night. Easy to teach and easy to play. But with 10 very intelligent players, it is not easy to master.

I never win but it is one of my favorite games.

Dixit is easy to learn, and a fun "party" game. If you stretch the definition of the word a bit, you can even say that there is "strategy" involved. For all the people who enjoy Dominion, Puerto Rico, etc., but want something that you can play with a big group of people who won't sit still long enough to learn the rules of more complex games, this is a good choice.

This is the expansion (self contained) to the original. The artwork is very good, and entertaining in itself.
