this new model has a packing board completely sewn into the bottom, and includes a much heavier guide board, a bit smaller. in the previous model, the heavy bottom board was removable, and I found the guide board sufficient by itself. Therefore, the new model ends up a couple more ounces for me. Plus I had a nice "hidden" compartment in the old model, no longer available with the new model. I don't think the velco is any more of a problem, unlike some other reviewers. Wish companies would not "muck" with a good design.
