My husband ordered this game and at first I was skeptical to say the least. I am normally not a fan of board games, but since he was so enthusiastic I decided to give it a chance. We took it over to his parents house to play for family game night and I really enjoyed playing this game! The rules are simple enough to understand, at one point my 8 year old son with Autism even joined in the game play. The whole concept of the game is to get contra banned items passed by the sheriff by either lying or bribery. It does not sound like much, but the people you play with definitely make the game more interesting. If you are playing with family it is easier to pick up on when they are lying which adds to the excitement. The artwork on the box and through out the game is very high quality. There is not much to this game just cards, the coins, the characters, and the pouches that contain the contraband. However, I do remember my husband saying something about other "high value" cards that are available for purchase separately. I recommend this game to anyone who is looking for something out of the normal Monopoly, and Life realm.

Enthusiast: Board Gameson December 10, 2016
This is one of those games I really enjoyed my first time playing it. Then I enjoyed it a little less each time after that. It's not a "bad" game it just doesn't call to me as it did at one time. Classic games should hold their stay. It's really just a bluffing game that once you play with the same people you end up knowing when they are bluffing. It's easy to learn and to teach and the art is really good. The components are solid. The theme is one I like as well. I did get many plays out of it so it was worth the money I guess. I did end up getting rid of it though.

I am new to board games and specialty card games. I've played Monopoly, Clue, and Operation back when I was a kid growing up but then shifted strictly to video games and movies while leaving the board games behind although I did enjoy it and had a great time playing. I recently got back into it thanks to friends recommending games and doing more social party games since we were older in our late 20's. I've recently bought and played Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, Wits & Wagers, Quickwits, Voting Game and Sheriff Of Nottingham.

I returned the Voting game as that wasn't as much fun among our group of friends and the others I have had a blast with. Out of all these games the most fun we had as a group was with Sheriff Of Nottingham. The bluffs, British accent we employ, and dialogue is laugh out loud funny and silly. Its such a simple premise for the game that anyone can understand it in minutes. It's much more fun the more people you have but needs a minimum of 3. Ideally 4-5 people are optimal and more competitive.

Also when we're in the mood and don't have work the next day we make a drinking game out of it. If you're the sheriff and you inspect the goods and find contraband the guilty merchant drinks. If the merchant was honest and there was no contraband the sheriff drinks. its fun, try it out if you're of age and like to imbibe the sauce (^_^)

The quality of the items were really top notch. The bags are felt and feels nice but it does have a gross chemical smell though. I just stuffed some dryer sheets in with them and its good. The box itself is sturdy and has a nice textured feel and finish. The coins, character boards, and sheriff are cardboard that you have to pop out of the holder but it was easy to do so and the edges did not fray. The rules book is very well made and will last long. Detailed descriptions of the rules with illustrations and graphics make this one of the best and easiest to understand rulebook and game.

We tend to play this at least 1-2 times a month and every time its been great. I have attached photos that might help you out and what to expect when you but this. Happy gaming, Cheers!

This game was a hit at family game night!

A truly rich experience - much richer than you'd think from reading the game's description. I had this on my to-buy list for over a year and always passed, thinking it looked, well, a bit boring. "I'm paying how much for this? To do what? Put cards in a bag?" Well gosh, was I wrong!

This game is a hoot! A 100% grand-slam! I love it! Here's some reasons why:
+ Repeated play with the same group isn't dull: players refine and switch up their strategy, leading to tense, comical game moments as someone is unexpectedly caught by a usually-lax Sheriff who has decided to play hard ball, or as someone sneaks in tons of contraband who normally is honest. This sort of relationship within the game keeps things fresh and exciting, and players are eager to replay to implement new schemes.
+ The game is precisely as long as it needs to be, and never drags on: it ends at that happy point of "aww, I could've kept going!", which many games don't know how to do anymore. This is one of those games that your group will say "let's play it again!" before the points are even tallied.
+ Rich point-scoring system: This was a blast. Who will be the Cheese Queen? Who had Royal Goods tucked away to blow out the scores? This keeps the game quite exciting!
+ Gorgeous art: I wasn't sold at first, personally, but after seeing the game in-person, I must admit, it's quite beautifully done and it really suits the mood.

If you're on the fence, if you're saying, "hey, why would I pay this much for a game about lying about cards in a little bag? what's the big deal?" Let me tell you: you need this game, you will love this game, and you will slap yourself for not getting it sooner!

So, i purchased this game 2 years ago and i have a couple of comments about it which i will categorize into two different sections: The game itself and the quality/durability of the box and game pieces themselves.

The Game Itself: The game itself is an overall fun game to play. I've played this with family member and friends countless times, all of which the person who plays with the most strategy wins all the time. In Sheriff, the dynamic at first may be to find out who's telling the truth and whose lying, but as you get more experienced, you realized that strategy fails and you have to concentrate on what other merchants posses because everyone tends to ignore the kings and queens bonuses.
Noobs: The game doesn't get dull after a while. If you're a new player looking to purchase the game and get into gaming or if you're a new gamer looking to further your collection, by all means i truly recommend Sheriff because you can play it with your friends for years and its never going to be boring. If anything, it becomes more enjoyable the more you play.
Experts: If you're an expert player looking to introduce your friends or family to this game or even experience a new type of game dynamic for yourself, i would still highly recommend this game. I haven't necessarily used Sheriff as an introductory game to new players since most board games on the market today contribute a vastly different player dynamic, although once i do introduce new players to gaming, this is the first intermediary-advanced type of game i would use since the rules get more complicated than simple introductory games.
Durability: I would say that half of the games of Sheriff that i played were inside my own house, so there wasn't much travel where there. The other half of the times that i played this game were at school and i have an hour commute. I carry this game in a draw-string bag for protection. The box is quality cardboard and will not tear on you. Again, I've had this game for 2 years now and the only damage to the box that is noticeable are common shelf wears like white parts of the cardboard beginning to appear and be stripped away (although very minor at that as well). Bottom line: The box hold up. The cards hold up. The player cards hold up. The imaging themselves are very nice and very true to the game. Play time is anywhere from 30 min to an hour for me on average.

Well, i hope that helped you guys decide whether you're willing to buy this game or not. If you have any questions please feel free to message me about this specific board game or any board game for that matter and id be more than willing to let you know (if i know the board game (which i probably do)).

I'm in my mid 40s. A group of 3 to 6 friends come over after work on a Friday once a month and play board/card games with my teenage daughters and I. Sometimes we finish at 2 or 3 or 7 in the morning. We added Sheriff of Nottingham to our mix (which includes games such as King of Tokyo, Smash Up, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, Epic Spell Wars, Ticket to Ride, The Resistance, Dudo dice game, LCR dice game, Zombies!!!, etc). It was another excellent addition to arguably the best night of my life... which always supercedes the previous game night.

Read other reviews for the mechanics of play. I can only add "If you love games that turn the most honest, upstanding person into a lyin', smugglin' merchant trying to haggle their way to the market while also screwing you over, then you'll love this game".

Replay Value: A+
Fun: A+
Ease to Learn: A+

I love this game! The pieces are high quality and artwork is beautiful. This is a deception game where you will have to lie about what you are smuggling in your sack as you enter town. The sheriff will choose whether he will take your bribe and let you pass or search your bag and penalize you. Each person takes turn being the sheriff. It is good not note you don't necessarily have to lie to get points in this game. Scoring is a little tedious but the instructions are well written and are a good guide to walk you through the game. I only wish there was some sort of visual to represent an area where you present your bags to the sheriff. There is an expansion coming out that kind of remedies with the visual of a cardboard chest where the sheriff keeps all the contraband he finds.

I'll jump straight in and say that I like this game a lot. With the right group of people this is an incredibly fun experience. It helps if you get into character! However, the thing that knocks a star off for me is that I personally prefer games that aren't solely based on the deception element. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy stabbing people in the back (I love the Game of Thrones board game, for example), but I found that after a while this game can get a little repetitive. However it's beautifully presented, the artwork and the equipment you get is of a high quality. This is a great game for people who want to move past the traditional board game collection and expand their horizon.

We had a great time with this game with all the usual accents coming out. The interactions were funny and nerve racking as you try to get your goods past the sheriff.
But I didn't like the draw cards aspect. Too many people plowing through cards that are face up from other player discards. Didn't feel right. Need a home rule on that one.
Pretty simple mechanic of put some goods you need or want in your baggy and then your human personality determines the rest of the day.

Overall, great family game and though it is rather simple (I don't like games that are too simple with more than a few IFs and BUTs to my rule) , this game was great fun.

The game itself is pretty entertaining. I assume most people looking for it know how it's played so I'll skip over the game-play. The equipment however, leaves a lot to be desired.

First, the Sheriff indicator (a standing picture of the Sheriff) has a cross fitting piece on the bottom to allow the piece to stand. Except that the notch is way too big and it'll fall off every time that you pick it up.

Second, the pouches that you insert the cards into are utter rubbish. Not only did the transfer printed logo start the tatter after a couple plays, but the cheap clasps fit so tight that you almost rip the fabric every time that you try to unclasp it.

A minor third gripe is that the coins are made out of punched cardboard, I would have preferred plastic are something a bit more durable for a game piece that will be handled quite frequently.

I hope they revise the game with better-made components as it has left me pretty disappointed in its execution.
