Great lens. Sharp enough for professional work. Amazing autofocus when used on my a6500. No complaints. All of the photos I attached were shot with this lens on the a6500 with natural light. Minimal lightroom editing. I shoot video in a studio for a living. I'm not a professional photographer but a friend asked me to shoot family portraits for them because I have a decent setup.

BUYER BEWARE!!!!! Not the right lens 8-26-18

I have a trip coming this week and was excited to exclusively use my 35mm lens. It came today and when I unboxed the first thing was a Vonage phone charger and then the lens is wrong with a missing back cover. The lens is totally exposed in the box!
I’m thinking this was a returned item and they didn’t check the box - the charger I’m thinking was for weight. (See photos)
I am SO upset being I only have a few days before my trip. I will be returning this item and hopefully getting the correct lens!
I will update once I reach Sony.

I've owned my Sony a6000 for almost a year now and plan on building up my lens collection. This is the first lens that I've bought aside from the two lenses I got with the camera (16-50 and 55-210). I've only played around with it for a day, but the quality is amazing and I can tell right away this is going to be a game-changer for my photography. As an amateur, I can't go into much detail about the specifics of why this lens is making me so happy, but what I can do is provide pictures for you to decide!

As a novice photographer, I only have two lenses: the kit lens that came with my Sony a6000, and this one. The kit lens itself does really well taking daytime/outdoor photos, and this lens covers all the other use cases I would need (indoor/dim lighting, sunset and after, city lights). I don't know enough about photography to say anything more about it, but fortunately there are a ton of pros who have already expounded on how this lens is one of the best bang-for-your-buck lenses you can get.

Get an Effect You Don't Want to Make Up in Processing

Having access to a wider aperture and a faster lens is a game changer. I can get much more of a bokeh effect as I can access a shallower depth of field. This prime lens is also much sharper than the wide-angle kit lens at 35 mm. I never bothered to try to simulate bokeh in post-processing, but now I know that I probably never will. Nikon and Canon have been in the lens game for a while, but Sony is really stepping it up recently. And you'll be able to take advantage of Sony's autofocus much better than with a third-party lens. I plan on using this lens for landscapes, but I also used it for a portrait of my roommate, and it looks very clear and professional. Very happy with this purchase. (Small concern: I did hear this weird noise when turning on my camera for the second time I used this lens. Anyone know what that might be?)

Fast and accurate autofocusing on my Sony a6500. Beautiful bokeh and superb low light performance. Sharp edge-to-edge, even at wide open. Great for photography or filming. If you're using a gimbal, this compact lens is easy to balance and won't wear you out after a day of shooting. I have both Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 Art and this lens. While both are spectacularly good, this has a tremendous advantage in being easier to travel with and nearly-instantaneous autofocusing. Outstanding lens overall.

Best Walk Around Prime Lens To Leave On

This has become the lens that stays attached to my camera in perpetuity until I need a telescoping zoom. Great pairing with the Sony A6000, and vastly better than any kit lens, so long as you are willing to work around the fixed focal length. It’s not the widest, and maybe a turn off for those who want that for landscape at a moments notice. But it’ll do in a pinch, especially if my manual focus pancake lens is left at home. If I don’t want to be out and about with my full kit bag, this lens on a crop sensor is as close as you will get to having a walk around ‘nifty fifty’ with you at all times (works out to about 52.5 on the crop sensor).

Instantly became my preferred every day lens. However, I luckily was able to purchase this lens when it was only $275. Since Covid, Sony has jumped the price up to $475! Such a shame...Wait for the price to drop guys.

Great all around lens

Pros:
This is my primary lens. I use it all the time for portraits (which it excels at), close-up photos, as well as scenery photos. Amazing picture, you can truly tell the difference from the kit lens. Even though it can't zoom, because it has such clarity, I can usually get a decent cropped photo for what I want.

Cons
- Despite its versaility, it is of course not a wide angle lens which has been problematic for me when trying to get (1) a group photo in a small space or (2) a close up image of a cool building without enough space to back up. So I would say if you have a lot of tight spaces and want to capture whole rooms rather than single persons, this one isn't for you.
- The autofocus is very light-sensitive. If you have a face and a bright object next to the face, the lens will get very confused. I have to use the 'select what to focus on' tracker setting a lot because of that.
