2.0 out of 5 starsOh My, Nausea
Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2013
I know that the 2 stars may not be a fair reflection of the quality of these Nutiva Chia Seeds - Other Nutiva foods we've used have been very good - and honestly I've never experienced other chia, but I'm rating these based on how they upset my tummy.

Everyday I see posts/pins about the wonders of chia, so I decided to "sample" it with this little pouch, and I'm so glad I did not order a larger size. I have a couple of food sensitivities, and after eating chia (I made a simple chia "pudding" w/ almond milk, which turned out nicely) felt so nauseous. For hours. I decided to look up possible effects of chia, and there are a few negatives including nausea.

Be warned if you are food sensitive (or on certain medications, have low blood pressure, are pregnant, are susceptible to hypoglycemia) that chia may not be for you. In the future I will remember to look more closely at possible effects before I order/consume.

5.0 out of 5 stars CHIA SEEDS ARE AWESOME
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2014

i have 10 reasons you would love chia seeds

Combat Diabetes
Chia is being studied as a potential natural treatment for type-2 diabetes because of its ability to slow down digestion. The gelatinous coating chia seeds develops when exposed to liquids-can also prevent blood sugar spikes.

Get More Fibre
Just a 28-gram or one-ounce serving of chia has 11 grams of dietary fibre — about a third of the recommended daily intake for adults. Adding some chia to your diet is an easy way to make sure you're getting a good amount of fibre, which is important for digestive health.

Stock Up On Omega-3
Chia seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, with nearly five grams in a one-ounce serving. These fats are important for brain health. "There's better conversion of omega 3s into the plasma or into the food than with flax seed," said researcher Wayne Coates.

Stronger Teeth And Bones
A serving of chia seeds has 18 per cent of the recommended daily intake for calcium, which puts your well on your way to maintaining bone and oral health, and preventing osteoporosis.

Don't Forget Manganese
Manganese isn't a well-known nutrient, but it's important for our health: it's good for your bones and helps your body use other essential nutrients like biotin and thiamin. One serving of chia seeds, or 28 grams, has 30 per cent of your recommended intake of this mineral.

Plenty Of Phosphorus
With 27 per cent of your daily value for phosphorus, chia seeds also helps you maintain healthy bones and teeth. Phosphorus is also used by the body to synthesize protein for cell and tissue growth and repair.

Pack In The Protein
Chia seeds also make a great source of protein for vegetarians and don't have any cholesterol. One 28-gram serving of these super seeds has 4.4 grams of protein, nearly 10 per cent of the daily value.

Fight Belly Fat
Chia's stabilizing effect on blood sugar also fights insulin resistance which can be tied to an increase in belly fat, according to Live Strong. This type of resistance can also be harmful for your overall health.

Get Full. Faster
Tryptophan, an amino acid found in turkey, is also found in chia seeds. While tryptophan is responsible for that strong urge to nap after a big Thanksgiving dinner for example, it also helps regulate appetite, sleep and improve mood.

Improve Heart Health
According to the Cleveland Clinic, chia seeds have been shown to improve blood pressure in diabetics, and may also increase healthy cholesterol while lowering total, LDL, and triglyceride cholesterol. All good news for your ticker!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Look Forward to Chewing My Water Every Day Now!
Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2014
Style: 12 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
A friend recently lost some weight and I asked her why she would get so thin, and she said she wasn't trying to lose weight. She started putting these Chia seeds in her water and she lost weight. I'm not sure they are good for weight loss, but I bought them and did what she said. I put 3 teaspoons (she said she does 2) in my 23.7 oz bottle of Arrowhead water everyday, then I put it in the fridge so it stays cold and leave it in there for at least an hour or two. She does hers the day before, so she always has one ready. The Chia seeds fluff up with a slimy coating (not sure what else to call it), and the first time I drank it, it was odd literally chewing on my water. The Chia seeds only took up 20% of the water area, but I like to shake it so I get some with every drink/bite. I drink 3, 23.7 oz. of water minimum per day, but now, 1 of them is fortified with the Chia seeds. After one week, I can honestly say (okay, this is personal, but I buy based on honest reviews and like to help others, too) that one "movement" per day is more "exceptional" than the others that day. It's usually in the morning, and after just 1 week, I literally feel better. I recently lost weight and started eating some bad foods I should not be eating. I thought I'd put all the weight back on I lost and I didn't! I was like...hmm, is this cause I drink my Chia seeds every day now? I am going to start getting back on the treadmill and watch my diet more. The health benefits alone are insane, and my water really doesn't have much flavor at all. I must be a geek, cause I get excited to drink my water with my Chia seeds now! I wouldn't want to do the Metamucil or any of those other fiber things I've tried because they are all disgusting. They give you stomach problems, too. This gives me NO stomach/intestinal problems whatsoever! If I get a lot of fiber and it has all the health benefits one of the reviewers mentioned, I'm in for life! Thanks, Nutiva, for making a healthy, organic product I enjoy that's good for me!

4.0 out of 5 stars Soluble fiber, not omega-3, is the reason why chia seeds are healthy for us
Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2013
Style: 12 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
The short-chain omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid, is close to useless in improving our health. The average American can convert only about 3% to 5% of it into what he or she really needs, the phospholipid-based long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. So what are the real reasons why chia seeds are healthy for us?

(1)Chia seeds are high in soluble fiber. Soluble fiber partly blocks the absorption of calories from fat. Also, soluble fiber feeds the good bacteria in the human digestive tract and greatly increases their numbers. The good bacteria manufacture beneficial chemicals which (1)kill the bad bacteria, (2)lower blood pressure, (3)cause weight loss, (4)prevent cancer, (5)prevent clogged arteries by improving cholesterol numbers, and (6)prevent constipation.

(2)Chia seeds are high in lignans. Lignans are phytoestrogens that prevent heart disease, cancer, and many other killer diseases. To derive the full health benefit from lignans, we only need to eat an extremely, extremely, extremely small amount of chia seeds or ground flaxseeds every other day.

(3)Chia seeds are high in phytate. Phytate is a powerful antioxidant that prevents heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and many other killer diseases. Phytate partly blocks the absorption of calories from starch and protein. Phytate partly blocks the absorption of toxic heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium. Phytate partly blocks the absorption of iron, which is a cancer-causing and artery-clogging pro-oxidant. Phytate is greatly helpful to diabetics by partly preventing the breakdown of starch into glucose. Phytate slightly reduces the severity of flatulence.

(4)Chia seeds are high in phytosterols. Phytosterols partly block the absorption of cholesterol from our intestines by mimicking the chemical structure of the cholesterol molecule.

Product of Paraguay.

5.0 out of 5 stars New to Chia Seed
Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2013
Style: 12 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
Okay, I am falling in love with these little guys! They can be mixed in almost anything and are great as a topping as I found out today.
I have found that this brand is just fine. The seeds are black with some white mixed in. The smell is lightly nutty and there really is no taste, just feel in the mouth. One person mentioned worms being in the pack. I'm not sure if they actually found worms but they said they saw the seeds moving around in the bag. Not to worry! They are very little and the sack itself creates static inside which makes them look like they are moving around. The quality is great. No junk in the bag and all the seeds gel up as they are supposed to if real.
I've been mixing the seeds in my yogurt and today topped my peanut butter toast with them. The consistency is similar to seeds in blueberries or raspberries and they do tend to get stuck in your teeth and gel while there too. So you may want to swish something in your mouth really well or brush your teeth after eating them.
For new users, this product will quickly clear up digestive issues and if you use too much you might get plugged up, if you know what I mean. To counter act this you can also eat, or stir into tea or coffee, a couple of teaspoons of organic coconut oil. That is good for you too and tastes like candy to me. :)
I love this product and think you will too. Join me in getting healthier by eating these little beauties!

It’s super fresh and great quality. The seeds absorb liquids and flavor very well. Would recommend and would purchase again. I mix chocolate chia pudding with shredded coconut and it makes a wonderful afternoon pick me up, flavored just like an Almond Joy :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fiber, Fiber, Fiber

I take these, alternating with my flaxseeds, for fiber. I have taken flaxseeds for years now and have added the chia seeds because I figure variation has more health benefits. Particularly If diabetic, having ample fiber, especially with heavy meals, lots of carbs meals or sweets... the fiber goes a long way to synergize the sugar with the body. Just like oranges (which naturally has the fiber along with the juice) the body processes it lots better than just drinking orange juice.

With juice, the body sky rockets the sugar overload and throws a real problem into our health. It's no wonder there are so many diabetics today - because we are not told of these truths, unless of course we research the facts. Through the years I have learned from my body that this makes a big difference in my sugar readings. Just proves it makes sense to eat what is natural as much as possible instead of letting all these processed items in our stores (that are so convenient and easy) take us into trouble. We cannot totally omit all bad foods, but when overdoing it, let the fiber help keep the body synergized as much as possible. I must add: I am NOT connected with medical field in any way... just learned what works and what doesn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another food to your health arsenal
Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2010

I purchased the Chia seed after learning about it from Nutiva.com. The seeds seems relatively harmless and don't have much of a taste in dry form. I put a little water to them to make a gel and was a little grossed out by the texture. The thought of making a food out of it was a little off putting. I haven't actually made anything yet but Amazon asked me for a review, so here ya go. They are starting to put Chia into foods and I actually purchased a chocolate chia bar from my food co-op that I haven't had a chance to taste yet. I'll get back to ya.

Update: 1/18/2011- Okay Chia gel is not for me. I tasted the chia bar and decided to donate it to the trash gods. I will try consuming the rest of my chia dry as a food topper, etc. Good luck to you chia triers and chia lovers.

Update 6/12/11-I've been experimenting with my chia seed and have made a great tasting granola. I use 3 cups of old fashioned oats, 1 1/4 cup hemp seed 1/4 cup of chia seed, 1/2 Tbsp. of pumpkin spice, 1/4 cup grapeseed oil and 1/2 cup honey. I whisk the wet ingredients and mix them into the already mixed dry ingredients, then bake in a 325 oven for 20 minutes stirring every 5 minutes or so. I eat this in my fruit & yogurt parfait, as a snack and as a breakfast cereal. So happiness for me and the chia seed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great in salads and breads.
Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2014

A co-worker of mine gave me some chia seeds to try one day, saying that they are high in Omega 3s, protein, and fiber. Having only heard of chia seeds being used to grow Chia Pets, I was leery, but they turned out to be a great food additive.

I've been sprinkling a handful of chia seeds on my salads and adding them to my bread maker. In the salads they add a nice texture and since they don't have much flavor they don't overpower your foods.

When they are dry they have a nice crunch to them, similar to a poppy or sesame seed. When they get wet the outer shell begins to soften. Be aware, they get stuck in your teeth a lot!

The packaging they come in is a very sturdy and durable resealable bag. I've never had any issues with my deliveries.

All in all... a healthy food that easy to incorporate into your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crunchy but soft

I enjoy this product. I use this for breakfast either in my cereal or oatmeal. I've heard people using these in smoothies as well. If you leave chia seeds in liquid long enough they will puff up and become soft, similar to tapioca pudding. Serving size is 1 tbsp, which looks like a lot, so I've been using half of that. They really don't taste like anything, just the texture will change if you add liquid. I think this product was reasonably priced.
