5.0 out of 5 starsUSB 7 port 3.0 Hub with One Design Annoyance
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2015
This is a review of the AmazonBasics 7port USB 3.0 HUB with external adapter, I have put it through the paces and come out really quite impressed with this unit although it does have one minor flaw that I chalk up to user error more than a poor product. I upgraded my motherboard and finally have some USB 3.0 ports on it so it seemed a waste to downport it with an old powered 4 port USB 2.0 HUB when I could get a 3.0 powered HUB and upgrade in speed. Plus USB 3.0 is back compatible with USB 2.0 and I don't believe I have any USB 1.0 devices anymore. I bought this one instead of the 10 port because I didn't want a bigger HUB with more ports that I wasn't going to use. Honestly who has more than 7 USB devices attached at once on a daily basis and can't just simply unplug one to make room for another?

Pros
- The reports of poorly shaped pins can be forgotton, or at least discounted on the specific model HUB I bought. I've looked over each port several times and the pins don't appear to be misshapen at all. BUT then again I could be editing this review months from now with an update that the pins bent and are now shorting out, although that would likely be due more to user error than product defectiveness.

-This HUB has its own power supply which means that it can provide fast charging to things like Cell Phones and some other USB devices when they are attached to the two Fast Charge ports on the side of the port. These two ports are isolated and have a little lightning bolt above them and labeled "Fast" so that you know they are the fast charge ports.

-The charge rate for my Samsung S4 Active is fast enough, as fast as plugging it into the wall outlet all by itself which is an improvement over plugging it into a standard USB port on a computer. Charging like that takes forever and barely keeps the phone ON much less charging.

-It has a single blue LED bar on it that lets you know it is working, no light over every single port which I appreciate the minimalism here. Treating me like an adult I KNOW when I have something plugged into a port I don't need a status LED over every one of them!

-I haven't messed with USB 3.0 until my motherboard upgrade but it will blow you away. I transferred 75GB of data from an external HDD over this hub to my computers HDD in 15 mins. That is a rough transfer rate of 100mb/sec. THAT blew me away.

Cons
-The Power Supply Unit for the HUB is nearly as big as the hub itself. Yes they give you plenty of cable length to hide it under a desk or wherever but it is something you might want to realize if you are going for a minimalist desk setup. The PSU is actually thicker than the HUB itself (See my Pictures)

-I had ONE issue getting my phone to be recognized as an external device. One of my USB cables is apparently not compatible with this HUB. But I am chalking this up to the fact that the cable itself is cheap. It would charge but my computer would not see it as a device nor recognize it as even being plugged into the computer at all. I switched the cable and the issue immediately resolved.

-Orientation with my model can be a bit of a challenge because it is shaped like a wedge with all the ports on the wide end of the wedge. So you basically have a decision to make. Do you want a cleaner look with the fat end of the wedge facing away from you and lose access to the rear ports OR do you want to face the fat end of the wedge toward you and be annoyed that the words amazonbasics are upside down every time you look at it. The choice is yours! I decided to face the fat part of the wedge toward me.

Summary
Really this port is great and is giving me all the functionality I need. I decided NOT to deduct a star for the slight orientation annoyance posed by this product only because it really only annoys me from time to time. My unit appears not to have any defects and all the ports function flawlessly as designed. And for the price there really isn't anything comparable to it.

3.0 out of 5 starsQuestionable durability, middling design
Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2014
I have had this product for about 7-8 months as of the time of this writing.

As for the pros, it was able to work perfectly and (as far as I can tell) flawlessly with my various USB devices. Permanently attached to the hub I have an Apple wired keyboard, an Apple USB-ethernet adapter, a USB/lightning cord for plugging in my iPhone, and a Seagate 2.5" portable drive. Everything worked at full speed. Everything could be plugged an unplugged at will and still work.

I would also sometimes plug in an extra portable HDD and/or 1 or 2 flash sticks at a time everything still worked fine.

So until recently, my only functional complaint is that the USB ports are spaced too closely together on both the front and back (they seem to have about the same spacing on the back where there are 5 USB ports and on the front where there are another 2). If your USB plug has anything but the absolute lowest profile of overmold, its going to block the adjacent port. This can turn this nominally-7-port USB hub into something that is functionally more of a 5 or 6 port (because 1 or 2 of your ports will be blocked by USB plugs that are anything but the smallest of USB plugs). That's still plenty of USB ports for me but if they're going to build 7 USB ports, why not space them out so that you can actually use all of them?

However, recently I had a much more severe problem. Just last week something about my AmazonBasics USB hub broke. My 2.5" portable HDD would no longer work with the hub and my other devices lost their hot swapping capability. For example, if I unplugged the Hub from my computer and power, left my iPhone, USB-ethernet adapter, and keyboard plugged in, when I then plugged the Hub back into power and my computer all those devices would work until I unplugged them for the first time... and then they could not be plugged back in and work.

Amazon sent me out a replacement under the 1 year AmazonBasics warranty and this new one is working perfectly as my original did when I first received it. However, with that failure in less than a year, and only a 1 year warranty, I'm suspicious about the quality of this device.

Buyer beware. Unit broke in less than 8 months. All it did was sit on my desk. Only 1 year warranty. I hope it was a fluke.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb USB Hub Works Beautifully and Takes Little Space
Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2013

As I depend on my Laptop more and more the one significant complaint I have is the shortage of USB ports.

For the towers this is less of a problem, although over the years I've purchased Hubs which were the oversized plastic ports they were unsightly but they worked.

Considering my applications run from Podcasting to mid to high end video editing not to mention USB wireless mice and keyboards which run off a USB receiver.

Needless to say, I can use all the ports I can get my paws on, well, so to speak.

In the past I've been impressed with Amazon Basics - especially their cables - a high quality HDMI sells for less than ten bucks. Simply great products at rock bottom prices.

I purchased two of these - and the build quality is no exception from other Amazon Basics products and offer terrific bang for your buck.

* Very Small Footprint

* 4 USB 2.0 Ports

* Yellow Confirmation LED light

* Effortless to install - no drivers, no software

* Zero distortion when used with USB powered Laptop speakers

* Clean Connections

* Hassle Free Packaging

I was pretty sure that in rendering and producing HD video I might loose some quality but this wasn't the case whatsoever. The units provide a direct connect quality in both sound and video and I'm delighted with their performance.

If you're looking for a USB hub that's small in size, efficient and has great portability you'll be hard pressed to find one this well made and this good at any price - let alone the rock bottom cost these are sold for.

Highly Recommended.

This unit works well by providing multiple USB ports; however, you lose some functionality if you have windows 11.
The is still a great buy if your looking to add additional ports to your computer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Convenient and Affordable Amazon Basics 10 Port USB 2.0 Hub - 5 Pack
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2022
Size: 5-PackStyle: 10-Port USB 2.0Verified Purchase
I recently purchased the Amazon Basics 10 Port USB 2.0 Hub in a 5-pack and have found them to be very convenient and affordable. They are perfect for charging multiple devices at my desk and I appreciate having the extra ports for all of my gadgets.

The hubs are lightweight and easy to use, and I have had no issues with them so far. They are also very affordable, which is a bonus.

My only issue with these hubs is that they seem to be drop shipped, as they arrived in separate packages and without any packaging materials or documentation. This is not a major concern, but it did make me wonder about the quality and authenticity of the product.

Overall, I would give the Amazon Basics 10 Port USB 2.0 Hub a 4-star rating due to the drop shipping issue, but I am still very satisfied with my purchase. They are a great value and have made charging my devices much easier and more organized.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reliable over 8 years
Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2024

I've used this little device reliably for nearly 8 years without a hitch. I've used it to add ports to a laptop, but now I use it to segregate devices from UPS power. It's compact and very lightweight. The one star off is precisely because it's so light. It spends most if its time the fallen over because the weight of the cables alone are enough to pull it over. It's a minor annoyance.

One other benefit is it makes for a good place to charge low priority devices because it's a slower charge, which doesn't tax lithium batteries like the rapid chargers do.

Overall I recommend it.
