My Penname
4.0 out of 5 starsSolid power supply and great value.
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2014
I am reviewing the 500 watt model.

This is an ATX desktop supply that is 85mm (3.35”) tall x 150mm (5.91”) tall x 140mm (5.51”) deep. This compact model will fit almost all full, mid, & micro ATX cases. (This is NOT a laptop AC adapter.)

The connectors are well formed and well labeled.
Qty: / Type of connector / # of plugs @ approx length
Qty:1 24 Pin (20+4) ATX 19”
This 20+4 style connector will fit both ATX24 pin & ATX20 pin main boards.
Qty:1 EPS 8 Pin (4+4) 23”
This 4+4 style connector will fit both EPS4 pin & EPS8 pin main boards.
Qty:2 PCIE 8pin (6+2) 1@21” & 1@26”
These 6+2 connectors will fit both PCIE6 & PCIE8 video cards.
Qty:6 SATA 2@17” & 2@22” & 2@26”
Qty:3 Four-Pin Peripheral 1@17” & 1@22” & 1@27"
Qty:1 Floppy 31”

This supply is rated at the amperage below and comes with OVP (Over Voltage Protection), UVP (Under Voltage Protection), OCP (Over Current Protection), OPP (Over Power Protection), SCP (Short Circuit Protection), and OTP (Over Temperature Protection).

500watts @ 40C / 3.3v 24A / 5V 20A / +12v 40A / +5vsb 3A / -12v .3A

This supply has a large fan that auto adjusts it's speed so it is quiet under light to moderate load. Under heavy load it can get a bit noisy but no worse then any other 80+ supply I've used. This supply has an on-off switch on the rear side.

My experience with this supply:
Power-up time and voltages were within spec when I tested them. I ran a 12 hour burn-in test when I installed it and the supply passed with no issues. (***Update 2016: I've had this power supply for over two years, I re-ran the 12 hour stress test and the supply passed again with no issues.***)

The big question:
Will this supply work in your computer? The list below should help answer this question.

Form factor: Is your mainboard and case ATX standard compatible?
ATX is the most common standard, but others exist such as like BTX or ITX, so be sure your mainboard and case ATX compatible. This information should be available on product spec sheets or contact your computer manufacturer.

Connectors: Are the connectors you need provided?
Take stock of your components and make sure this supply has a connector for every component. This supply has plenty of connectors so it's unlikely you'll need more then they provide.

Cable lengths: Are the cables above long enough?
If you are using a full size case be sure to check the cable lengths. For instance, if your supply is mounted on the top you may not be able to reach a bottom mounted SSD without a cable extension.

Watts: Can your system run on 500watts of power?
Use a free online power supply calculator to check the power requirements of your system. I prefer the OuterVision Power Supply Calculator but there are many others available. As a general rule you want at least %20 more watts then your system requires.

+12v Amps: Can your video card run on the Amps provided?
If you are using on-board (built into the motherboard) video then this does not apply. But if you have a discrete video card check the +12v rail requirement from the card manufacturer. As a general rule you want at least %20 more Amps then your card requires.

Proprietary system replacement:
If the replacement is for a proprietary system (store bought pre-assembled computer) then first confirm your supply is ATX standard and then replace it with one with equal or larger wattage and amperage. Check the sticker on the side of your current supply and make sure the wattage and each rail of this supply is equal or higher. If in doubt consult with your computer manufacturer.

2003 or earlier power supply replacement:
Modern ATX supplies do not provide a legacy -5v connection. If your computer was made in 2003 or earlier, and still has an ISA bus, it may need this legacy -5v connection. In short, if your current supply has a white wire on the ATX connector then this supply may not work for you. If in doubt consult with your computer manufacturer.

In all cases I strongly recommend testing any power supply before hooking it up to actual hardware. While defective supplies are rare, installing one could destroy any or all of your expensive components. I prefer the Coolmax LCD Power Supply Tester PS-228 (ASIN B002R06PGE) for this task but there are many good ATX power testers on the market.

Overall, it's an excellent supply given the low cost (about $40).

Then why four stars?
The first unit I received had a bad fan and was returned. I'm pretty sure this was a fluke because since then I have installed many more and had no problems with any of them. Every manufacturer makes the occasional lemon so don't let this deter you from buying this supply. In my experience EVGA stands behind their products and honors their warranty so there's no worries here.

I will buy another PSU from EVGA in the future and I do recommend them to friends.

1.0 out of 5 starsAfter it "blew up" my machine, i found out the warranty is worthless.
Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2018
Let me start with the good points. The power supply is nice when it works. Seems to be built well and I've bought 6 of them over the last few years. Cables are bundled well and the cooling fan is quiet. Even reaching customer service was easy.

Now the issue. When the power supply failed it didn't just stop delivering power, i fried my motherboard and memory and one of the ssd drives in the machine. I don't know how but the cpu still runs like a champ. The power supply still puts out some power but voltage levels are inconsistent and frequently to low. So that's done, i call evga about replacing the power supply under warranty. (I didn't mention anything else since they won't cover that anyway) and they look it all up and confirm it's still warranty and if i go online (they tell me this while I'm talking with them) and register it and call them back, they will start the RMA process which should only take 24 hrs. Then when they get the power supply back from me (i pay shipping) then they seems me a new one the slowest cheapest way possible. All in all the process will take about a week and a half plus however long i take- figure 2 weeks total. Plus I'm out shipping which will run about $20 (or more if i don't choose the cheapest option).

So for a $40 power supply it costs me at least $20 and a 2 week wait, for a computer i use every day. After the way it damaged my computer I'm not putting another one in anything i care about plus the time and expense making it questionable if it's even worth sending back and wasting the time. For me evga power supplys aren't worth it. I suggest getting something cheaper or much more reliable depending on your needs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Died after 33 days of use. At least it didn't burn my house down :)
Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2017

Being a budget builder, it's almost impossible to miss this power supply. Indeed, this power supply is being recommended by thousands of PC builders for those who are on a budget.

What this PSU has going for it, is being better than one of those generic power supplies in general by:
1. Having Heavy-duty protections, including Over Voltage Protection, Under Voltage Protection, Over Current Protection, Over Power Protection, Short Circuit Protection, and Over Temperature Protection. You know, those stuff that will make you think that it will not burn your house down, that stuff.
2. Having a Quiet Fan.
3. Having that premium look.

Indeed, what budget builder would resist that? I couldn't.

You see guys, when you are buying a cheap psu with a reputable brand, it's always not as good as it seems and I had to learn this the hard way. You see, Before buying this 500W model, I had a 430W model for 10 months and it has worked fine for my budget build, however I decided to buy a 500W model because I wanted to build another pc for various reasons, so when this 500W arrived, I moved the 430W psu from PC 1 to PC 2, and installed this 500W to PC 1.

Fast forward to 33 days later, I wake up in the morning, sit at my computer, press the power button and fans only spin for 0.5 seconds and PC fails to POST. After spending some time diagnosing, I determined it was the power supply. THANK GOD I STILL HAD THAT OTHER PC, so I moved that 430W back from PC 2 to PC 1 (my main pc), that really saved me and got me up and running.

After that I did various tests on the PSU and determined that it only works for 0.5 seconds when starting and shuts off after that, even when using the green wire jumpstart trick. Only a 14 year old motherboard, P4B533-X was able to start it and 3.3V rail was out of spec, giving 3.6V instead. I contacted EVGA for help but they just said I have to RMA it and bla bla bla.

Now here's the problem, EVGA's rma page clearly states "The customer is responsible for the costs of shipping in order to return the product to EVGA for the RMA process". I don't wanna waste money shipping back a hunk of junk. I can just buy another one.

I'm guessing the quality control is not that great for this PSU. Why would it be? This thing is only $30.

Back when I was buying this, I had to chose between similar PSUs from Thermaltake and Corsair. I just chose this one because my existing one was from EVGA. I sure made a terrible mistake that will haunt me forever. Waste of time and money.

At least it didn't burn my house down :) That's a plus, so I'll give it 1 star instead of 0.

1.0 out of 5 stars Put out 10W just fine, but died as soon as I asked it for 20W of power.
Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2014

I bought this PSU two months ago for a summer DIY project that I had planned, and was going to use it as a stand-alone power supply for a boombox. I just completed the project today. I did test the PSU when I first got it in June, with a small load consisting of two 80mm cooling fans and nothing more, and the PSU powered up and seemed to function fine, so I put it back in the box until the time came for me to build the boombox. Skip forwards to today when I finally had everything completed, assembled, and wired. The PSU, like before, powered up and did just fine under a small load (two 80mm fans and low volume car stereo operating at around <10W output.) But as soon as I turned up the volume on the stereo, to a volume not even 1/2 of its 20W RMS per channel X 2 channels (40W total), the PSU just died for no reason.

The PSU was rated at 500W. It successfully output around 10W or less, but as soon as I asked it to output maybe 20-25W, it decided that it would rather be a paperweight than give me 5% of the power it advertised.

So I went out and replaced the PSU with a Corsair CX750 which was on sale at the local Blue and Yellow electronics store, and everything works fine. I've had EVGA graphics cards before and never had any issues with them, but if they're slapping their brand on such poorly made PSU's, then I'll probably avoid all of their products from now on.

The worst part is that I was sold this worthless product, and even though I did the right thing by giving it a simple small load test to see if it was DOA when I got it, because I wasn't able to use it until after the 30 day return period, I'm now left with a useless piece of junk that I can't get a refund for. And there's no way in hell I'd send this thing in to get it fixed using the manufacturer's warranty, even if they paid for the shipping. I would have more faith in a company that sent me a DOA PSU, because that happens to every company every now and then, and I've had that happen before in the past. But when that happened, and a replacement was sent, I ended up with a PSU that put out advertised specs and I never had any problems with it. But to send me a unit that does indeed work, but soils the bed when you demand that it gives you 25 of the 500 watts it says it can give, that's just extremely poor quality and can be expected from everything that their production house is approving at final inspection.

If anyone wants a free, fancy looking paper weight, I'll mail this PoS to you if you cover postage.

About one month after installation, I started noticing glitches occurring in my PC i.e. display adaptor failures, etc. After another month additional issues began to come up which I thought might be malicious but discovered after extensive scans none existed. Finally, I had screen freezes and after extensive hard drive diagnostics and virus scans (no problems were found with the hard drive or virus issues) the computer would not even turn on (no fan or anything working on the power supply). I got a lemon for a power supply.

Mine was used or at least had been opened before. The seal on it had already been opened and inside it was obvious it had just been dropped back in. Box arrived in a clear plastic bag with an address label stuck to the outside. The overall quality has dropped since the others I have purchased. The wires are no longer color coded and also are not enclosed in braided sleeves like the previous ones. I went ahead and used it because I could not be without it today. I will be looking for another brand to use for the next one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Weird things have been happening.....
Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2019

When I first got this psu, it has been doing my computer a pleasure! But with time, my computer has been acting weird. The monitor, keyboard, and mouse become deactivated (Monitor gets no signal, mouse becomes unusable, and keyboard just straights up turns off) and unusable at times and I have to constantly power off and on my computer! So, I went back to my old 460w psu ,and so far my monitor, keyboard, and mouse hasn't deactivated. I would probably be wary buying this. Thank you and have a good day.

Update- September 2020: I didn't say this before but I contacted EVGA, and they agreed to send me a new one after I sent them the faulty one. Once I got the new psu, it was doing good for months, then for some reason the pc started to do all those weird things from before, at the time I thought it was my pre-built that I got for a present. So I saved up money to build a new pc, and I used this psu for the new build. For the first few weeks, it worked fine, then it did the same thing, monitor no signal, mouse, and keyboard stops functioning. And it only happens when I’m not doing anything on the pc. When I find the solution I will make sure to change or leave the review rating as it is. But yesterday, I was on photoshop doing some sketches, and then it did it again! Screen flickered, no signal, mouse and keyboard stopped working. So I have no idea, I updated everything, and made sure all the cables were seated correctly.

I purchased this as a backup and figured $30 was a small price to pay for a little bit of insurance. It's now outside of the return window and I decided to utilize it on a different project. D.O.A.. I'm fully aware that this item will not function without a jumper or a connection to a motherboard. Lesson learned, you get what you pay for..
