How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

My Penname
4.0 out of 5 starsSolid power supply and great value.
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2014
I am reviewing the 500 watt model.

This is an ATX desktop supply that is 85mm (3.35”) tall x 150mm (5.91”) tall x 140mm (5.51”) deep. This compact model will fit almost all full, mid, & micro ATX cases. (This is NOT a laptop AC adapter.)

The connectors are well formed and well labeled.
Qty: / Type of connector / # of plugs @ approx length
Qty:1 24 Pin (20+4) ATX 19”
This 20+4 style connector will fit both ATX24 pin & ATX20 pin main boards.
Qty:1 EPS 8 Pin (4+4) 23”
This 4+4 style connector will fit both EPS4 pin & EPS8 pin main boards.
Qty:2 PCIE 8pin (6+2) 1@21” & 1@26”
These 6+2 connectors will fit both PCIE6 & PCIE8 video cards.
Qty:6 SATA 2@17” & 2@22” & 2@26”
Qty:3 Four-Pin Peripheral 1@17” & 1@22” & 1@27"
Qty:1 Floppy 31”

This supply is rated at the amperage below and comes with OVP (Over Voltage Protection), UVP (Under Voltage Protection), OCP (Over Current Protection), OPP (Over Power Protection), SCP (Short Circuit Protection), and OTP (Over Temperature Protection).

500watts @ 40C / 3.3v 24A / 5V 20A / +12v 40A / +5vsb 3A / -12v .3A

This supply has a large fan that auto adjusts it's speed so it is quiet under light to moderate load. Under heavy load it can get a bit noisy but no worse then any other 80+ supply I've used. This supply has an on-off switch on the rear side.

My experience with this supply:
Power-up time and voltages were within spec when I tested them. I ran a 12 hour burn-in test when I installed it and the supply passed with no issues. (***Update 2016: I've had this power supply for over two years, I re-ran the 12 hour stress test and the supply passed again with no issues.***)

The big question:
Will this supply work in your computer? The list below should help answer this question.

Form factor: Is your mainboard and case ATX standard compatible?
ATX is the most common standard, but others exist such as like BTX or ITX, so be sure your mainboard and case ATX compatible. This information should be available on product spec sheets or contact your computer manufacturer.

Connectors: Are the connectors you need provided?
Take stock of your components and make sure this supply has a connector for every component. This supply has plenty of connectors so it's unlikely you'll need more then they provide.

Cable lengths: Are the cables above long enough?
If you are using a full size case be sure to check the cable lengths. For instance, if your supply is mounted on the top you may not be able to reach a bottom mounted SSD without a cable extension.

Watts: Can your system run on 500watts of power?
Use a free online power supply calculator to check the power requirements of your system. I prefer the OuterVision Power Supply Calculator but there are many others available. As a general rule you want at least %20 more watts then your system requires.

+12v Amps: Can your video card run on the Amps provided?
If you are using on-board (built into the motherboard) video then this does not apply. But if you have a discrete video card check the +12v rail requirement from the card manufacturer. As a general rule you want at least %20 more Amps then your card requires.

Proprietary system replacement:
If the replacement is for a proprietary system (store bought pre-assembled computer) then first confirm your supply is ATX standard and then replace it with one with equal or larger wattage and amperage. Check the sticker on the side of your current supply and make sure the wattage and each rail of this supply is equal or higher. If in doubt consult with your computer manufacturer.

2003 or earlier power supply replacement:
Modern ATX supplies do not provide a legacy -5v connection. If your computer was made in 2003 or earlier, and still has an ISA bus, it may need this legacy -5v connection. In short, if your current supply has a white wire on the ATX connector then this supply may not work for you. If in doubt consult with your computer manufacturer.

In all cases I strongly recommend testing any power supply before hooking it up to actual hardware. While defective supplies are rare, installing one could destroy any or all of your expensive components. I prefer the Coolmax LCD Power Supply Tester PS-228 (ASIN B002R06PGE) for this task but there are many good ATX power testers on the market.

Overall, it's an excellent supply given the low cost (about $40).

Then why four stars?
The first unit I received had a bad fan and was returned. I'm pretty sure this was a fluke because since then I have installed many more and had no problems with any of them. Every manufacturer makes the occasional lemon so don't let this deter you from buying this supply. In my experience EVGA stands behind their products and honors their warranty so there's no worries here.

I will buy another PSU from EVGA in the future and I do recommend them to friends.

1.0 out of 5 starsAfter it "blew up" my machine, i found out the warranty is worthless.
Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2018
Let me start with the good points. The power supply is nice when it works. Seems to be built well and I've bought 6 of them over the last few years. Cables are bundled well and the cooling fan is quiet. Even reaching customer service was easy.

Now the issue. When the power supply failed it didn't just stop delivering power, i fried my motherboard and memory and one of the ssd drives in the machine. I don't know how but the cpu still runs like a champ. The power supply still puts out some power but voltage levels are inconsistent and frequently to low. So that's done, i call evga about replacing the power supply under warranty. (I didn't mention anything else since they won't cover that anyway) and they look it all up and confirm it's still warranty and if i go online (they tell me this while I'm talking with them) and register it and call them back, they will start the RMA process which should only take 24 hrs. Then when they get the power supply back from me (i pay shipping) then they seems me a new one the slowest cheapest way possible. All in all the process will take about a week and a half plus however long i take- figure 2 weeks total. Plus I'm out shipping which will run about $20 (or more if i don't choose the cheapest option).

So for a $40 power supply it costs me at least $20 and a 2 week wait, for a computer i use every day. After the way it damaged my computer I'm not putting another one in anything i care about plus the time and expense making it questionable if it's even worth sending back and wasting the time. For me evga power supplys aren't worth it. I suggest getting something cheaper or much more reliable depending on your needs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad fan after a few years
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2022

The fan went bad after a few years. It is making quite the racket. No big deal I thought, I'll open up the case and replace it with a new fan. But I'm having trouble with the super tiny screws on the case, they strip out rather than unscrew. If I can't get them out, I'll have to buy a new power supply, all over a bad fan. I'll keep trying, but I think they need to make it so the case is easily opened.

2.0 out of 5 stars Died within 6 months and had to PAY for warranty shipping
Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2019

This power supply installed easily and had all the necessary power cables. I thought it was going to work out well. I had it for 6 months and then it died. I contacted EVGA for warranty service and that is when I became disappointed. I thought that buying a brand name would mean a rational, modern support network. I was wrong. I had to first register my pwoer supply, get the invoice, open a support ticket, then wait for approval of my ticket, then submit a different ticket for the warranty replacement , get that ticket approved and then I had to ship the to product back, at my OWN expense, and I am now told that they will send a replacement once they receive and "process" the return.

All in all it is an overly complicated process that I can only assume is meant to discourage people from actually using the warranty. I purchased the product for 39.99 + tax and to send it back to get replaced it was $33 for the cheapest UPS rate. I would have been better off buying a NEW power supply from a different company. EVGA is technically honoring their warranty but the cost to me is the same as a new power supply and I have to wait weeks now to get my computer up and running again instead of 2 days for prime shipping.

I must be spoiled by normal amazon returns. In the future I am going to avoid this brand name. My experience is that the warranty is worthless unless you buy a really expensive item and even then I would think twice.

2.0 out of 5 stars This was terrible to install
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2020

What I did not like about this product:
-Even though its free shipping, it took a week to get here. I had to wait while all my other computer parts were here within two days
-Installing it was the worst. These are the male plugs that plug into your motherboard and video card. There are different number of teeth in each one, and one had like 16 teeth that I needed to plug into the mother board. Well in addition to having an extra set of teeth so its more customization, that really just takes up space, i had to hold together a set of 10 teeth and a set of 6 teeth and plug them in at the same time-for all three plugs. It took an hour to get all three in. It should be super quick and easy. But it was torture. The cords are also thick and bulky and I often had to come at the plugins from further away to get an angle I could bend the cord for. This part just looks bad, pretty cosmetic.

I wouldn't buy this again but it seems like it works pretty well. my computer has power right now

2.0 out of 5 stars PSU dead after 10 months! Other components were fine
Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2019
Verified Purchase
I bought this psu for a secondary build for my mother, nothing special, just office and browsing, i have used evga in my main system and it has endured 5 years so far, but this one has completely failed me.

After 10 months and less than a thousand hours on, tonight it was the day the pc made a loud crack sound and shut off, lights still on, but nothing else was, i held the power button and i was surprised it did nothing, so i fliped the switch on the back of the psu, tried several times to boot the pc but then noticed the psu fan started spinning for a quick second and then it would stop sending power, i did a quick paperclip test and it indeed confirms the psu is dead, i will give credit to evga if i find none of my components are dead as well, hopefully evga will still hold true to be a quality psu maker in that aspect. UPDATE: Atleast the GPU Died without collateral damage, all the other components were fine and i replaced it for another PSU

2.0 out of 5 stars MSI Motherboard Owners! A Fair Warning!
Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2016
Verified Purchase
I’ve purchased 2 of these in the past 4 months. One was installed on a FM2+ MSI motherboard. The current one is being installed on LGA1151 MSI motherboard. I’m starting to think that something is slightly incompatible with MSI here.

Fans spin briefly, stop, and nothing happens. This has happened with BOTH systems in the same exact way. The first system we were stubborn enough to keep working with for many hours because it was a Christmas present and my dad's new video card relied on it. It eventually worked with whatever random combination of reconnecting or re-seating got it up and running the next day after I had left.

The current build I’m doing is another story. I spent 3 or 4 hours working with this thing thinking either my new MOBO or CPU was bad. Multiple reconnections, made sure they were tight, and re-seated the CPU 3 times and replacing the thermal paste…nothing worked. I threw my older lesser quality 460W Cooler Master at it and it booted up immediately.

The 20+4 pin is VERY snug and I feel like I’m going to break the board each time I unplug it because of how much force and wiggling back and forth it requires. I’m inclined to believe that the connectors on these are at least slightly incompatible with MSI boards. Just a fair warning! Take it with a grain of salt because for all I know it could be a number of other issues that results in this problem, but I’ll personally steer away from this product from now on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Now shutting down under load
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2016

Worked great for a while but in just under 2 years it's started to shut down randomly under load (not a clean shut down, it's like someone just pulled the plug). I've checked the CPU and other temperatures and nothing comes close to shutting down so I can only assume it's the PSU.

My PC is nowhere near close to using 500W so I know I'm not overloading it. PC Parts Picker estimates about 285W. This is the component list and the only things that are not self powered that are attached to USB are a smart card reader and a memory card reader:

2.0 out of 5 stars Failed after 2 years, Warranty useless
Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2019

Installed the unit in a PC I built for the kids to play games on. I3 on an MSI ITX board, XFX R9 270, and one SSD. Not a massive load. The PC started shutting off and refusing to power on at random a few months ago before finally shutting off for good. We have several rigs so I didn't get around to dealing with it until now. Put a Corsair PSU in it and it fired right up and is happily burbling along. For a cheap PSU two years of life is about par for the course and it seems to not have cooked anything on its way to the great blue cloud of smoke in the sky, so I'm annoyed, but not too put out. I went to file an RMA since I still have a bit of time left on the warranty, they won't file an RMA unless I call them and waste a few hours "troubleshooting". It's a $40 PSU, so I'll eat it, but I'll be *blanked* if I give EVGA another dime.
