My Penname
4.0 out of 5 starsSolid power supply and great value.
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2014
I am reviewing the 500 watt model.

This is an ATX desktop supply that is 85mm (3.35”) tall x 150mm (5.91”) tall x 140mm (5.51”) deep. This compact model will fit almost all full, mid, & micro ATX cases. (This is NOT a laptop AC adapter.)

The connectors are well formed and well labeled.
Qty: / Type of connector / # of plugs @ approx length
Qty:1 24 Pin (20+4) ATX 19”
This 20+4 style connector will fit both ATX24 pin & ATX20 pin main boards.
Qty:1 EPS 8 Pin (4+4) 23”
This 4+4 style connector will fit both EPS4 pin & EPS8 pin main boards.
Qty:2 PCIE 8pin (6+2) 1@21” & 1@26”
These 6+2 connectors will fit both PCIE6 & PCIE8 video cards.
Qty:6 SATA 2@17” & 2@22” & 2@26”
Qty:3 Four-Pin Peripheral 1@17” & 1@22” & 1@27"
Qty:1 Floppy 31”

This supply is rated at the amperage below and comes with OVP (Over Voltage Protection), UVP (Under Voltage Protection), OCP (Over Current Protection), OPP (Over Power Protection), SCP (Short Circuit Protection), and OTP (Over Temperature Protection).

500watts @ 40C / 3.3v 24A / 5V 20A / +12v 40A / +5vsb 3A / -12v .3A

This supply has a large fan that auto adjusts it's speed so it is quiet under light to moderate load. Under heavy load it can get a bit noisy but no worse then any other 80+ supply I've used. This supply has an on-off switch on the rear side.

My experience with this supply:
Power-up time and voltages were within spec when I tested them. I ran a 12 hour burn-in test when I installed it and the supply passed with no issues. (***Update 2016: I've had this power supply for over two years, I re-ran the 12 hour stress test and the supply passed again with no issues.***)

The big question:
Will this supply work in your computer? The list below should help answer this question.

Form factor: Is your mainboard and case ATX standard compatible?
ATX is the most common standard, but others exist such as like BTX or ITX, so be sure your mainboard and case ATX compatible. This information should be available on product spec sheets or contact your computer manufacturer.

Connectors: Are the connectors you need provided?
Take stock of your components and make sure this supply has a connector for every component. This supply has plenty of connectors so it's unlikely you'll need more then they provide.

Cable lengths: Are the cables above long enough?
If you are using a full size case be sure to check the cable lengths. For instance, if your supply is mounted on the top you may not be able to reach a bottom mounted SSD without a cable extension.

Watts: Can your system run on 500watts of power?
Use a free online power supply calculator to check the power requirements of your system. I prefer the OuterVision Power Supply Calculator but there are many others available. As a general rule you want at least %20 more watts then your system requires.

+12v Amps: Can your video card run on the Amps provided?
If you are using on-board (built into the motherboard) video then this does not apply. But if you have a discrete video card check the +12v rail requirement from the card manufacturer. As a general rule you want at least %20 more Amps then your card requires.

Proprietary system replacement:
If the replacement is for a proprietary system (store bought pre-assembled computer) then first confirm your supply is ATX standard and then replace it with one with equal or larger wattage and amperage. Check the sticker on the side of your current supply and make sure the wattage and each rail of this supply is equal or higher. If in doubt consult with your computer manufacturer.

2003 or earlier power supply replacement:
Modern ATX supplies do not provide a legacy -5v connection. If your computer was made in 2003 or earlier, and still has an ISA bus, it may need this legacy -5v connection. In short, if your current supply has a white wire on the ATX connector then this supply may not work for you. If in doubt consult with your computer manufacturer.

In all cases I strongly recommend testing any power supply before hooking it up to actual hardware. While defective supplies are rare, installing one could destroy any or all of your expensive components. I prefer the Coolmax LCD Power Supply Tester PS-228 (ASIN B002R06PGE) for this task but there are many good ATX power testers on the market.

Overall, it's an excellent supply given the low cost (about $40).

Then why four stars?
The first unit I received had a bad fan and was returned. I'm pretty sure this was a fluke because since then I have installed many more and had no problems with any of them. Every manufacturer makes the occasional lemon so don't let this deter you from buying this supply. In my experience EVGA stands behind their products and honors their warranty so there's no worries here.

I will buy another PSU from EVGA in the future and I do recommend them to friends.

1.0 out of 5 starsAfter it "blew up" my machine, i found out the warranty is worthless.
Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2018
Let me start with the good points. The power supply is nice when it works. Seems to be built well and I've bought 6 of them over the last few years. Cables are bundled well and the cooling fan is quiet. Even reaching customer service was easy.

Now the issue. When the power supply failed it didn't just stop delivering power, i fried my motherboard and memory and one of the ssd drives in the machine. I don't know how but the cpu still runs like a champ. The power supply still puts out some power but voltage levels are inconsistent and frequently to low. So that's done, i call evga about replacing the power supply under warranty. (I didn't mention anything else since they won't cover that anyway) and they look it all up and confirm it's still warranty and if i go online (they tell me this while I'm talking with them) and register it and call them back, they will start the RMA process which should only take 24 hrs. Then when they get the power supply back from me (i pay shipping) then they seems me a new one the slowest cheapest way possible. All in all the process will take about a week and a half plus however long i take- figure 2 weeks total. Plus I'm out shipping which will run about $20 (or more if i don't choose the cheapest option).

So for a $40 power supply it costs me at least $20 and a 2 week wait, for a computer i use every day. After the way it damaged my computer I'm not putting another one in anything i care about plus the time and expense making it questionable if it's even worth sending back and wasting the time. For me evga power supplys aren't worth it. I suggest getting something cheaper or much more reliable depending on your needs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Was told it would fit BUT----?

I have a Dell XPS 420 that I got new back in 2008. Since then have added a better video card, wifi card, additional dvd/cd reader burner. The unit came with a 375 Watt power supply, but since I added the bigger video card and other items I thought for the price maybe the EVGA 500 W1, would let the computer run a little easier. Was told it would fit my Dell and for 40 bucks how much can I lose. Well the four mounting screw holes do not match the Dell screw hole and the only way to get it mounted is to turn it upside down with the fan up, also the power plug can not be installed due to the case design and for both reasons that is why I had to mount it with fan up, and so the power cord could be plugged into it.The mounting screws luckily aligned at three points not four, so it is attached to the case firmly, but due to the size difference has a space on the one side of about a quarter inch. Removed a few items to clean dust and just try to run the wires in the same way the older unit did. Some small problems due to my error in mismatching plugs but just switched them and my Dell is running OK, for now. The wires are long enough and all that had to be used had enough length to them. Only problem, and this is why I only gave three stars is that the fan is on top with only about a little over a quarter of an inch clearance from the top of the case. Ran the computer for about two or so hours and played a couple games and did some other things to see how it worked. After turning it off I noticed the area around the power supply was warm, not excessively warm but then again I really never had checked the power area before to have a comparison to judge by.

Pretty good for its price, though noisy and non modular. Cable management is a nightmare and you probably would want a better more expensive one for long term

3.0 out of 5 stars Quiet and great, while it lasted.....

Had I written this 2 days ago, this would have been a 5, but then it died..... I understand electronics fail, I've been doing this for 25+ years, but 7 months on a PSU, a little short in my opinion! With that said, I still ordered another one yesterday, that showed up today, is installed on the PC is back in working order. Now working through the RMA process on the failed one and so far that has been fairly straight forward with EVGA and quick response even via email instead of phone. Not happy about the failure and the time to replace the PSU, but so is life.

This PSU is whisper quiet and even though I'll have an extra one here shortly, it will end up going into another system in the place that is way too loud, so it won't go to waste!

Update: RMA process was straight forward and simple, though it cost me $18 to ship back a power supply that I could buy for $43 new, sad!

3.0 out of 5 stars Affordable PSU, but design made it a pain to connect power to motherboard
Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2015

Not bad for the price and for people looking for a power supply on a budget. This would've been great, but the way they made the 20 pin + 4 pin connector made it a pain to connect to my old MSI Z77A-G41 motherboard. Corsair's PSU designed it where you could connect the 20 pin to the 4 pin securely together so it wouldn't move and made it easier to connect to the motherboard.

EVGA designed this PSU so that it only has a little "hinge" where the 20 pin would push down on the 4 pin, but it's not securely together. This made it a pain in the you know what to get this flush into the motherboard slot. I tried about 30 times ... what happens if it's not flush against the motherboard slot is that the computer will turn on for a few seconds, then turn off or it wouldn't power on at all.

I was about to give up and get a higher priced PSU like Corsair, but finally got the pins in enough where it would actually power on my computer. Overall good price, but the design made it a pain to connect power into the motherboard.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ran well for ~5 years then completely blew up.

Ran really well into just over 5 years of service. Then my computer would boot for a second then turn off, this happened every time that I pressed my power button/turned it on via short circuiting motherboard. I let it boot (circuiting) with a screwdriver for over 5 seconds, the PSU started making clicking sounds, and something blew up and a light puff of smoke came out of it. Thankfully my components were alright.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid Electronics, PCI-E output cable undersized
Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2015

I purchased this unit to supply a certain 350-watt computing device that many readers may be familiar with. The EVGA 500W holds this load admirably, but seems destined to fail from cable overheating.

I have purchased over a dozen units and a little over half are still in service. The failures have all been due to the PCI-E cable overheating and shorting out. After each failure the PCI-E cables have been found to be very brittle, as though the copper wire had annealed. I deducted two stars for not meeting nameplate spec.

It is a shame because the base unit has been highly reliable even in 24/7/365 service. Some of the failed units would probably work again if the cable could be replaced. If your load is below 300 watts, the 500W may be a great buy for you.

The efficiency is low relative to other high-power PSU's - it pulls about 415 watts to supply my 350 watt load. I switched to the Seasonic "gold" PSU's, which pull about 355 watts for the same load.

3.0 out of 5 stars Started failing after a year.
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2017

I'm writing this review after replacing the power supply.

I bought this in May 2015. Around May 2016, I started noticing a loud noise from my desktop. One of the fans was revving up. It would happen randomly; if the computer was in use or not. After checking all the other fans, I narrowed it down to the power supply. It also helped to figure out the culprit, that during one of the times it was revving up, my desktop shut off.

Yes, I know it comes with a 3-year warranty. But, for the cost ($30), it was easier to just buy a new power supply. The reason I am not giving it 1 star is, because it worked fine for a year. And, if I would have been willing to go through the RMA process, I assume that they would have replaced the power supply.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but makes noises

I bought this for my first ever gaming rig and finished the build about two months ago. everything worked well at the time and the power supply is more than enough to handle my power-hungry processor and graphics card. After using the PC daily I have started to notice (within the past week) a faint buzzing/clicking coming from the unit. It still works just as well as it did brand new but the sound is a little unnerving. I'm not sure if it's faulty fan bearings or something electrical making the racket but it is certainly audible in my quiet room.

Would I recommend this? Yeah I would, to an entry level PC builder like myself. However, I wouldn't trust the longevity of this product. Seeing how I have only had it for a short time and developed this issue already, i'll be looking at a replacement soon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Watch the Pigtail Connectors!
Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2016

It is very difficult to find a reasonably priced power supply pigtailed to accommodate my Asus P4P800-E mobo. I'm still using the EIDE drives with only one SATA slave. I had an nVidia AGP 7600GS card that requires supplemental power Which was just enough that most other supplies could not keep up with.
This one seems to have the power, but it is pigtailed mostly to serve the SATA generation drives. I tried running the HDD/DVDx2/Floppy/aux panel off the single legacy pigtail and after a week the supply started shutting down within a couple minutes of boot. So far it's made it through a second week with one of the DVD drives unpowered.

I'll either have to find a rare power adapter or splice in a legacy pigtail to the unused SATA pigtail to redistribute the load.

Other than that it has been quiet and slipped right into the bay without a hitch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Brand New power supply, was missing a power pin in the ATX connector.

I would have to say this was a first, and very scary. Due to their horrible Quality Assurance, I may have fried my PC and components. The ATX Connector shown in the photo was MISSING A PIN! It didn't fall out, it was OMITTED when it was manufactured. This will be the last EVGA Power Supply I will ever buy. Do yourself a favor and go with a different brand.

Update: Changing review to 3 stars. The product does work but on a very old 20 pin motherboard it did not. I changed the motherboard out to a newer 24 pin ATX Power connector motherboard and it is now working. The EVGA Support was pretty bad, but luckily a helpful reply from J. Welch lead to the solution.
