I have nothing but good things to say about this camera. I have owned my Sony A6000 for just over a year now and it has been nothing short of perfect. I am a beginner photographer and it has taken high-quality, professional photos. The basic lens is limited in terms of the scope of photography but it has taken excellent basic landscape and people photography. I purchased an additional lens to take night photography and this camera has been amazing. I've attached some of my pictures below. If you're a beginner photographer looking to get into either landscape or portrait photography, this is the camera for you! It's smaller and lighter than most DSLRs and it's very intuitive to learn the settings and controls.

Camera Error. Turn power off then on...

Nice while it worked, but now its worthless with the infuriating message "Camera Error. Turn power off then on." Yep, I tried that and about 100 other suggestions from the thousands of other a6000 owners who experienced the same thing. Still the same unfixable error message. And Sony wants hundreds of $$$$ and several months to fix it. The a6000 was my first and will be my last Sony camera.

I love this camera. I got it on January 09, 2015. I immediately noticed how fast it drained the battery. It was even draining the battery overnight with the camera turned off, so I ordered 2 additional batteries and a charger. And I got in the habit of taking out the battery when I wasn't using the camera. I'm an engineer so I immediately started looking online for a remedy in various forums and conducting experiments to find out what was draining the battery so fast. After a lot of digging with no solution, I was going through all the menus one day and stumbled across Airplane Mode???

Sony a6000 battery drain mystery solved!!! Turn Airplane Mode On! The a6000 supports Wi-Fi transfer of photos and videos to SmartPhones, Computers and other Wi-Fi devices. The default setting is Airplane Mode Off which drains the battery even with the camera off because it is always looking for nearby Wi-Fi devices. The solution is to turn Wi-Fi Off by turning Airplane Mode On. Only turn Airplane Mode Off when you want to send photos/videos to another Wi-Fi device. Then turn Airplane Mode On again as soon as you have finished sending. Problem solved.

Bought this camera about a year ago as a gateway into photography. I was hesitant at first because I know how expensive good cameras can be and this one was at the lower end of the price spectrum, but, after seeing what it can do, I'm so extremely happy with this purchase. At 24 megapixels this thing is a beast. I don't use auto-focus lenses for this because vintage manual focus lenses are much more affordable, and quite frankly its a bit more fun that just pushing down the shutter button and letting the camera do all the work. Vintage lenses are a breeze to adapt to this guy. Literally just a metal collar that changes from one mount to another. There are adapters for more modern lenses but their generally a lot more expensive and you don't get the same auto-focus speed as a native e-mount lens. Don't be afraid of the manual settings mode. It will certainly broaden your horizons as far as what more you can do in photography.

Bottom line, If you are looking to get into photography without shelling out 3-4 grand on a high-end DSLR, this is your way to go. I;m sure this would hold over even the most seasoned photographer. If you are looking to get into Cinematography however, maybe this isn't this best choice for you in the long run. Maybe look in to spending a little more on an a6300 as that model will shoot in 4k60fps, 1080p120fps for slow-mo.

I've been shooting Canon for 14 years professionally and decided to dive into the mirrorless camera scene for fun. This camera was supposed to be my point and shoot amateur camera and I was so disappointed in the performance overall. The screen is useless and is better off not moving at all, not to mention, it drains the battery insanely fast. The battery % would go down by the min. I had a full charge, played with the menu and settings and was down to 70% already.

Picture quality is ok. Lens selection is poor and overpriced. The grip/overall feel of the camera was poor, even with the Sony protective case I bought with it. The video record button is in such an awkward position and inconvenient to hit.

Honestly, its a sleek camera. But with the poor battery life, poor grip, average image quality, it's hard to shell out that kind of money for a camera. The only pro was the video autofocus, which I will sacrifice by switching to the Canon 77d for video, which has dual pixel auto focus.

A great Camera. Upgrading to the A7 but only for the bokeh from a larger sensor, the IQ on this camera is stunning. Even for a crop sensor, Sony threw a whole bag of tricks at this one. On intelligent + modes it will digitally reconfigure itself into modes like "sunset" to use specific software that must have been cooked up for a very wide variety of purposes, as the camera seems prepared for situations I never expected to shot. Manual response is good, not quite as intuitive or friendly as a Lumix without configuration but fully workable. Menus are very deep, but not overly cumbersome. Some familiarity is required to find your way back. Sunstars are LOADS better than expected, and the zoom range on the kit lens is actually marvelous. Initially you think 90mm would be nice, but then you start to realize that you could shoot this camera all day at 35 or 50mm and still be perfectly happy. And when you do the math on the crop sensor, that 16mm focal length is actually an impressively wide 8mm lens. For less than $700, this is definitely my bet for the prosumer or of r someone who might have bought a canon rebel, but can now get all the benefits of a mirrorless camera with all of it's benefits. Sony clearly had whole project teams worth of engineering into this, and the A5100 and other cameras benefitted from this as well, but unless you NEED full frame the A6000 is the early cream of the first crop of mirrorless cameras. I wouldn't trade it for any Canon or Nikon. It is worth noting than Nikon is buying it's image sensors from Sony, and not competing with them in this area. Canon has great tech in it's dual pixel AF, but for now the contrast AF in the A6000 has them beat. It's staggeringly fast. You don't need 11 frames per second but you'll use it when you see you can get 7 keepers hanging out the window through a turn at 80 MPH in near dark in a deep canyon before sunrise. To get a similar or better camera at this price, you'd have to buy used. This is a game changer. Mirrorless has come into it's own.

Does Not Last Long

You would expect it will last longer than 1.5 years when you paid $600+ for a camera. Mine prompted "Camera Error Turn Power Off Then On" in the middle of vacation and never recover and Sony wants me to pay $200+ to send it for diagnostic minus the parts & labor. Looks like I will never buy Sony ever again and I will make sure all my friends & families stay out of SONY. Stay away or you might have to buy extended warranty for this crappy product.

Cool camera, bizarrely missing important landscape feature

I just received this camera today and am sending it right back after testing for 15 minutes. It's a cool little dude with a solid feel, good access to features, customizable buttons, great size/form factor, etc.

Bizarrely, it does not allow bracket exposure AND shutter delay at the same time. Those are "either/or" features oddly housed within the "drive mode" menu (and, yes, I researched online to make sure I wasn't missing something simple. It's a known flaw lamented on many forums.) You have to rely on a remote control if you want to shoot bracketed shots with a delay. That's a deal breaker for me who wants this primarily for landscape HDRs.

For most, using a remote is no big deal (or risking camera shake by pressing the shutter manually.) For me, it's one more thing to have to carry around and worry about battery life (or worry about losing) while in the backcountry. Even my point and shoot Canon G9 allows bracketing with shutter delay. Can't believe a camera at this level and price point is missing such a standard feature. Again - I'm sure this isn't a big deal to most, but, frankly, it makes me question what else Sony is missing that more traditional still photography manufacturers provide.

Camera Won't Charge

After a few months of minimal use (maybe 200 pictures total taken on camera), I was unable to charge batteries via the AC adapter to the power outlet nor from a USB connection to my laptop. The charging indicator light does not come on. I have tried replacing the batteries and the problem persists. I tried contacting Sony customer support and they provided minimal help outside of recommending that I try using different batteries. This has been very frustrating as I enjoyed the camera quality, but now I cannot charge my batteries through it. The micro USB Port should not brake down like this after such minimal usage. I've only connected the cable to it less than 5 times.

Taken for what it is - which is not a full DSLR - this camera is incredibly impressive! Lightweight, compact, and just about on par with any other crop sensor camera I've ever owned, this thing has become my go-to everyday carry camera.

Coming from the world of DSLRs, I almost dismissed this thing outright given how light it is. My background is in wildlife photography, and in that arena, a DSLR still reigns supreme - for my money, and just about every other serious photographer. But short of when I'm intentionally out with an active agenda, this is the camera that I will in all likelihood throw in my messenger bag to have handy when unexpected opportunities come up. This camera, 35mm and 50mm fixed lenses, and a zoom just in case - I bought a used 55-210 not long after - will cover 99.9% of the subjects you'll ever shoot. The power zoom that comes in the kit is by no means a bad option - takes adequate photos, and preserves the selling point of the tiny size of the camera. But fixed lenses will always help you take better, faster, and sharper photos. I guarantee it!

One area in which I do think this truly does, from a fundamental standpoint, win out over a DSLR, is that it is mirrorless. It is the future; the technology gets better by leaps and bounds, and Sony did by most accounts get this one right. It's not touchscreen, the menu isn't really well laid out, and the placement of buttons and dials take some getting used to if you're coming from a DSLR background. But anybody looking to start in photography could do way worse than a Sony mirrorless. The real time changes that you notice from your manual settings adjustments are far more forgiving than trying to learn stops of light and the compensations of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO on a DSLR. That immediate feedback on an LCD and in the viewfinder as well takes a lot of the guesswork out of the equations, and keeps you from having to constantly readjust to get things quite right. Learn here, and if you feel like progressing to higher end DSLRs, which still edge out mirrorless cameras as professional tools for the image quality they yield, you can certainly go that route. But in a camera like this, with more than enough megapixels you will ever feasibly need, and a perfectly fine sensor size for someone not looking to do huge blown up prints of their work, you'd be hard pressed to do better for the price.

And like the saying goes - the best camera for any opportunity is the one you have on you. If you want better quality than your phone is capable of, this is a camera that is light enough and small enough to come with you wherever you go.
