l first came across Don's music years ago in the soundtrack for French Connection. The sound he and his musicians created was something more arrestingly different than anything I'd heard before and they had me at hello. But, for some reason I never quite followed through on his other works...a mistake I've finally begun to rectify with this purchase. I could kick myself now for not doing it sooner, but on the plus side there are a lot more of his works becoming available these days. But, wow... There's almost nothing for me to describe how uniquely good these guys were. Lots of other artists made material that could remind you of the existence of as-yet-unexplored worlds of musical experience. They could evoke it, contemplate it and recall...but, NObody actually GOES there firsthand and so vividly brings it all back to you, fresh from the trip, like THESE guys do!! Immediate and in your face in the best possible way! (It almost makes all the rest seem like they're pretending somehow). The sheer force of their exuberance and creativity knocks you down and turns your assumptions of what is possible with a big band upside down in the process...yet, you enjoy every minute of it! Hard for me to listen at all to this disc without being transfixed and with a big grin stuck on my mug at the same time...particularly with Filmore, even though Underground is undeniably a great listen, too. Excellent remastering job, terrific separation, fullness, sound staging and overall sound quality on both titles.

I have the LP's from back in the day. This is an unusual combination of a single studio LP and a double live LP but it is great music for a great price.

Several of the tracks on Goes Underground are embarrassing (due to the vocals) but most of Live at The Fillmore is first class big band stuff (tho it doesn't equal the superb Electric Bath)

Some duplication of songs from other albums - however, very impressive writing and performance
