5.0 out of 5 starsUnlocking the Science Behind Habitual Products
Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2023
"Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products" is a deep dive into the psychology and science behind the products and services we can't seem to live without. Nir Eyal, with illustrative examples from Jamie Oliver, presents a compelling framework for understanding how habits are formed and how product designers can build solutions that cater to these ingrained patterns.

Central to the book is the "Hook Model" – a cycle that involves a trigger, an action, a variable reward, and an investment. Eyal meticulously breaks down each component, explaining how successful products seamlessly integrate into this model to drive user engagement and create sticky user experiences.

What sets this book apart is its blend of rigorous academic research with actionable insights for entrepreneurs and product managers. It challenges readers to think critically about the ethical considerations of creating habit-forming products while also offering tools and techniques to ensure that these products genuinely benefit users.

For anyone in the product design and development realm, "Hooked" is an indispensable guide. It offers a fresh perspective on user engagement, helping professionals craft products that not only captivate but also provide lasting value.

Trigger, action, reward, investment are the 4 phases. Some good practical tips, but a cliff notes version could deliver 80% of the insights in 20 mins.

1.0 out of 5 stars Could've been an online article.

I love this topic, but the book seemed extremely repetitive to me. It felt like a student stuffing a paper to get their word count up, and I got bored hearing the same thing over and over again. This was recommended on a few sites for UX learning, so especially in that context, this format feels silly. This basis of this information easily could be a short online article available to the masses. Borrow it from the library and skim through a couple chapters.

1.0 out of 5 stars A laughably low-content, slim book that serves to advertise the author instead of genuinely helping the reader.

An undersized book with a large font, this low-content blogpost copy-paste is all potatoes and no meat. A reader even slightly familiar with the topic will find nothing of value, while someone less familiar will walk away with hand-wavingly generic bumperstickers that seem to serve only as an bland value-signalling to VC's.

I am astonished this made some best seller lists. How?! This isn't even 101 level - this is junior-high summary level of the topic. This book is the equivalent of a summer feel-good movie that leaves the mind as quickly as you leave the theatre. There are so many excellent resources available in this discipline - seek those out and skip this Cliff-notes blog post summary of a book.

1.0 out of 5 stars The author writes for a certain reader, I guess.

I bought this book because of the great reviews.
However, it took me 30 minutes to read it while I was having my hot bath on a blustery cold day, from cover to cover.

So, what should I now review: Well, I suppose if I ever need a speaker to captivate the neurons of both left- and right hemispheres of techno hole-diggers, then he'll be the one I will think of. Alternatively, if I ever need a mock-vintage bookwriter for readers stuck back in a 1950s time-warp, I'll also probably think of Mr. Eyal right away.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless book with no substance

This is one of the most disappointing read I had in years (the other one is what I wish I would have known when I was twenty). This book offers no substance and no practical insight. Instead, it goes through some examples of successful companies (as of today) and tries to explain away why they are successful (again, as of today). The author also created useless jargons and try to make things out of nothing. It is a very shallow book overall with no credible data.

This book is filled with scientific inaccuracies. The author doesn’t seem to have a good understanding of psychology and behavioral science—his supposed fields. In addition, most of his examples contradict his model. I would stay away from this book if you’re interested in building better products or understanding the human mind.

Book was very short and redundant with limited original content. In addition, it contained summary sections at the end of each chapter repeating the same content included throughout the chapter.

No matter how valid or ground breaking Nir Eyal's information, the monotonal, words-occasionally-mispronounced narration of the CD caused me to cringe and regret my purchase.
