If debating whether to get this or the Sea to Summit I can explain the differences. The Osprey is “better” and has mesh straps, an outer water bottle pocket and generally feels more “full featured.” However, it doesn’t pack down nearly as compactly as the Sea to Summit. If you want to carry a backpack in your pants pocket the Sea to Summit is best. If you are using it as a daypack while traveling and are putting it in your larger duffel bag or luggage go Osprey. If you have cargo pockets on your pants the Osprey would also be the best option. The Sea to Summit basically only “wins” if you want the smallest size packed so that you can have an “emergency” backpack with you at all times

Osprey nails it... almost

Osprey has nailed the ultra ultralight stuffable day pack concept... almost. This model definitely compares favorably to the Sea-to-Summit offering (which I also own). If they just added a sternum strap (the same thin, strong material as the top strap, with a small buckle), it would be 100% perfect. As it is, it's not really that comfortable, but it is very well-designed considering the tiny weight. The straps are ingenious. In fact, the whole design is ingenious. The side pocket is a great addition, and the top pocket is a good design, too.

EDIT: I jury-rigged my own sternum strap, and it works great. I used a Bed Band (you can buy them here on Amazon. I did.). See pic attached.

Super lightweight. Tested this Osprey on the trail for a 12 mile hike. Zero problems and the side pocket was nice. Best feature - ultra lightweight. Strong material with nice zipper pulls. I'm very picky with comfort and weight. I weighted my pack before we left and it was only 7.5 pounds.

There is one modification you should be made aware of. The shoulder straps do pinch at the sides, but someone posted an inexpensive solution. Buy a $7.99 pack of mattress cover clips on Amazon and make your own chest strap. I wore it all day loaded with stuff including water and food. Without the homemade chest strap I might have sent it back.

I'm taking it to Grand Canyon and Mt. Whitney in 2017 backpacking and will post any issues.

Perfect packable day-pack

I had some specific requirements when picking out a daypack to pack in my 40 L bag to Europe.

They were:
- 15-20 liters
- More than just one big zippered pouch
- An external water bottle holder
- Less than 10 oz
- Actually packs small (for some reason a lot of "packable" daypacks don't really pack down that small)
- Less than $50

Let me just throw it out there that virtually NO other bag met these requirements. Most packable daypacks don't have the mesh waterbottle pocket which was essentially a must for me. Another thing I wanted that most don't have is a pocket to stash my wallet / keys / phone / etc that I could reach without going through the main part of the bag. Check. PLUS IT WEIGHS 3.2 OUNCES. Unheard of for a bag that isn't just one big zip pouch.

I'm kind of an Osprey groupie (my 40 L bag is the Farpoint), so I was pretty ecstatic to stumble upon this bag. If you own anything else from them though, you'll know that their grey/ black is never really grey or black. This bag is very much so a dark Forrest green, but that doesn't bother me, as it's functionality exceeds its aesthetics. The waterbottle pocket is deep and my klean kanteen didn't try to slip out once. I will say the fabric can be a bit see-through when packed so be conscious of what you have against the outside. Any lightweight bag of this material will have that issue though.

I had a sharp plastic container that tore through a shopping bag that I was nervous to put in here but this little osprey bag handled it like a champ. I'll try to update with pictures!

When "grey" isn't necessarily grey..

I ordered "Shadow Grey" and to my surprise, Shadow Grey is not black nor a dark grey (as depicted in the picture). Its more of a dark forest green. Why? Not sure, quite disappointed.

Aside from the color confusion, this bag is lightweight, durable and has a nice streamlined look. The zipper pull design makes it easy to open and close smoothly without any snagging. There are two compartments in the bag - the main compartment and a smaller, top compartment with a key fob holder which you can store your phone, wallet and small items. There's one side stretchy mesh pocket to store a water bottle or items you want quick access to. The straps are lightly padded with mesh so you have some comfort and support. The stash pocket made to store the bag is a bit small, but with a little tussling around, it packs nicely (not as clean looking as the picture shown).

Good for everyday errands, quick trips and short hikes. It carries a decent amount of weight and I can wear it for a good period of time until the straps starts to feel uncomfortable.

I've travelled the world with Osprey bags, and they have been the most solid bags I've ever owned. However, I was nervous about buying an ultralight pack. We had already tried one from another vendor and I wasn't overwhelmed with the product. The issue with these kinds of bags isn't the quality — there are quality bags out there for less — it's the thinking that's put into them. I'm impressed to no ends with the quality of this bag. Having dragged two of these on a recent International trip, we found them to be comfortable enough and they do pack down considerably. We did a ton of back country hiking with a part of these, and the best thing I can say about them is that they didn't get noticed... they just worked, and we were extremely pleased. We are now carrying this Osprey bag in another Osprey backpack as part of an ultralight International travel kit, which has been to nine countries in the last three years, all without incident.

Incredibly well made for the money
Excellent warranty by a stand up company who actually stands behind their products
Very good weight
Thoughtful features, including key ring
Integrated stuff sack that won't get lost (all the others I've seen are detached)
Comfortable for all ages (tested from 9-75)
Integrated water bottle holder actually handles a standard water bottle very well and is useful on a hike
High quality retaining strap makes it easy to bag hang, and fits over a standard door handle (it useful as a bathroom bag in more adventurous travels, for example)

Cons
The straps can be a tad uncomfortable, as with all backpacks in this class, if you have a lot of weight.
I wanted a black one. They only have grey.

Great pack, inferior material

I have been using the Sea to Summit pack and have been happy with it but have been intrigued by the Osprey. They are very similar but the Osprey has three features that make it better for me. The first is the side pocket for a water bottle, the second is the outside zipper pocket and the last is the ease of putting it into the built in stuff sack.

The problem that I have is that I have used it four times to carry my laptop and iPad and noticed that the back material has a small slice or tear. I would have thought that the material of the pack should be stronger. I have used the Sea to Summit since 2015 and it is still in perfect condition.

As much as I love the Osprey I cannot recommend it.

I really took the plunge on the Osprey. There are plenty of great options in the sub-$20 range but, given the brand name and reputation, I assumed the extra $15 would ensure a superior product. I was wrong.
The bag is designed terribly:
*The straps will dig into your lower armpits/back. The way they placed the straps guarantees an uncomfortable fit for any sized person (my GF felt it too, she's 5'5'')
*The zippers go down too low and easily open the entire bag when you're just trying to reach in for something in a hurry. Have had many instances where all the contents of my bag spilled all over the ground in an airport
*Having the smaller pocket on the top is a terrible choice, anything you put in there will be pressing against your back
*The material is extremely thin and already showing signs of wear after 1 month of use

If I could go back in time I'd beg myself to ignore this bag and grab one of the cheaper options. Had been using a random $15 bag before this one and found it to be superior in every way.

**UPDATE August 2019:**

After just 3 weeks of light use, the bag has two prominent holes both on the bottom and the front. The bottom has as major 'crack' forming that is so large I'm worried my laptop will fall out. I never used this thing to carry any more than my laptop and headphones. I'm currently in South Korea on travel and am now left without a bag.

For the past 2 years I've used a simply $15 no-name bag I also got on Amazon for the exact same purposes without even a thread missing. This bag has two holes after less than one month of use. This experience has confirmed that I will never purchase another product from Osprey. I no longer have any respect for them as a company that they would charge $40 for such an absolute piece of garbage product. I'll be contacting Amazon about a refund. Shame on you Osprey.

nice lightweight pack

bought this for a trip to disneyworld....not heavy, just enough volume to hold five disposable rain ponchos and a real rain jacket, plus four water bottles (the side mesh pocket will also hold two 16 oz. water bottles). made it through the trip in one piece (the pack, not so much me)

Disappointing compared to the competition

Given all the glowing reviews, I had high hopes for this pack. And while I'm ultimately disappointed with it, it isn't a bad pack. It just doesn't stack up against the competition. I've used the Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil (probably this pack's direct competition), as well as slightly heavier ultralight day packs (the REI flash 18 and the Gregory integrated daypack sold with full sized packs).

In comparison to the Sea to Summit offering, this pack is nearly twice as heavy and far less comfortable. As countless other reviewers have mentioned, the straps on this are poorly designed and become very uncomfortable quickly. While there are work-arounds, they add weight and bulk to the package; so why not just buy a more comfortable ultralight pack in the first place? The two things this pack has as an advantage though are the side water bottle sleeve (I found it worked quite well) and nice zipper loops. There are two things I found odd in Osprey's design choice: there are two zipper tabs, when one would have sufficed (and saved a little weight), and the incredibly pointless stuff sack is sewn into the accessory pocket on the top. This unremovable pouch adds a lot of bulk (it goes pretty overboard with velcro and stitching, though you won't have to worry about it falling apart!). The pack can already stuff into the the accessory pouch itself, so I'm dumbfounded as to why the stuff pouch exists at all.

If weight, compression, and comfort are your primary concerns (and the loss of a water bottle sleeve isn't important to you), then the Sea to Summit wins hands down. The Sea to Summit packs down to almost a quarter of the Osprey's size.

If you happen to be buying this for the reason I was (as a supplemental daypack for use during backcountry backpacking trips), some backpack makers are including ultralight daypacks inside their packs. Although not sold separately, Gregory includes a seemingly more durable day pack that doubles as a water sleeve. The sizes are similar and the weight nearly the same (4.4oz for the Gregory, 4oz for the Osprey). Gregory's straps are slightly more comfortable, though the top cinches instead of zips. There is no water bottle holder, but the pack does include multiple lash points, as well as hose holders for your water bladder (which the Osprey lacks and cannot accommodate).

For just a little more weight and a lot more comfort, you could also look into REI's Flash 18 pack. It's 2 ounces heavier (6oz with the chest and waist belt and pad sleeve removed, 9 oz all inclusive), but far more comfortable and capable. Doubles nicely as a stuff sack (though many of these packs do) and appears that it would hold up better to abrasion or sharp objects. While it does pack down small (with the padding removed), all the other options mentioned above pack down smaller.
