Classic screwball comedy. Rushed and not well threaded at times, however, not as crass as modern comedies.

The original novel was published in 1979 and the author, Kyril Bonfiglioli, was trying to emulate Woodhouse's style, so you have to watch the movie with the understanding that it is a classic screwball comedy, not always threaded thoughtfully, but always pursuing the instant gratification of the situational comedy.

This said, the movie is not as good as the novels. The plot was put together quickly and I don't think the screenwriters really believed in the genre. They made a caricature of it. However, it is not as bad as other comedies that get good ratings (The Love Guru comes to mind, with its crass jokes that patronize the audience's intelligence). Overall, there are worse ways to spend a couple of hours.

I give it the 5 stars to compensate the bad publicity, partially undeserved imho.

Spoor of a crime drama Paul Bettany actually shines the brightest of the cast

Mortdecai is a spoof crime drama. It features Johnny Depp as the English lord Charlie Mortdecai, Gwyneth Paltrow as his wife Johanna Mortdecai, Paul Bettany as Charlie’s man servant Jock Strapp, and Ewan McGregor as British Inspector Alistari Martland. They are all looking for a stolen painting by Francisco Goya.

Depp plays a bumbling idiot akin to Inspector Clouseau. The other standout role is played by Bettany who is like a working class James Bond that can take on all comers and who is also a ladies man. Bettany actually gets almost as many laughs as Depp does. They have the two run into all kinds of ridiculous situations like Mortdecai cutting off half the mustache of an attacker to two Chinese gangsters debating how to cut off Bettany’s finger.

It’s all a bit of mindless fun.

I'm a huge Johnny Depp fan and I try to all of his movies. However, I can rarely get to the theater. Since I like to watch his movies over and over, I usually order a DVD. So, I ordered this DVD before I'd seen the movie. <sigh> Let's just say, it's not my least favorite JD movie, but it is very close. If I had seen the movie before ordering this movie, I don't know if I would have ordered. Having said that, there was another one of his movies that I saw on TV when I first discovered him (I was late to the game). I didn't care for the movie (Secret Window) when I saw it on TV, but I bought the DVD anyway. After watching it a few times, it has now become one of my favorite movies. I think I've only watched Mortdecai once, so there is a chance it could still grow on me. It's not likely, but there is a chance. It's just when I want to see a JD movie, there are so many others I'd rather see that I never rewatch this one. I don't remember laughing once while watching this one. I wanted to like. I really did. I'm still a huge Johnny Depp fan, but just not a big fan of this movie.

Hilarious Johnny Depp!

Johnny Depp was absolutely hilarious in this! I didn't know he could be so goofily entertaining. I kept laughing through the whole thing. Paul Bettany was a great funny character too as his manservant. I love Ewan McGregor in everything and the other characters were perfect. If you're looking for a great complex storyline, this isn't that type of movie. But if you're in the mood for goofy humor, quirky characters and comedic style intrigue in a simple plot, then I do recommend giving this a try. Watched it a few times for a good laugh.

Please make more Charlie Mortdecai movies - he's hilarious! I've now seen this at least 7 times and it still cracks me up! I love these Kyril Bonfiglioli characters and funny plots.

this movie was well made, but the story line was not
its hard to follow at times, but than you remember its johnny Depp,

his belongings to make some money, his wife is GWYNETH PALTROW, she is not sure if she wants to have an affair

but he is very important to the show , Johnny's wife in the movie is very pushy and has a problem
with Johnny Depps new mustache and keep in mind she has a gag reflex and he can not stand it when does that in the movie
anyway, they find creative ways to find the art piece and lots of funny things happen in the move
the ending of the movie is not what you might think and it all works out for the best of ever one involverd, but i do feeel sorry for shac,

OY! Boring, formulaic, predictable, terrible acting, idiotic plot. While I am an ardent fan of true slapstick comedy, this film fails on each and every attempt at comedy. It is no doubt touted as a farce. But a ridiculous boring nonsensical farce. Produced no doubt as a melodrama, it fails hopelessly on this score too. Not one single feature is pulled off with wit. The over-the-top British accents were ludicrous. One has to wonder who would waste money on making this film. Or why it has repeatedly been referred to as a "cult classic"? An utter waste of time.

As usual, Johnny Depp's characterization was brilliant and perfect for the role he was playing, along with his alluring wife played by Gwyneth Paltrol. This fun and endearing movie reminded me of the vintage series of movies and shows about the Nick and Nora Charles characters. In Mortdecai, the aristocratic couple who's in financial disarray, embark in a worldwide search for a stolen Goya. During their snooping around, they encounter a series of dangerous feats which are sprinkled with lots of dark humor. Although I really liked it, I thought it was a little slow at the beginning, hence the 4 stars. However, it really is worth watching!

Mortdecai needs More Laughs

Bias Alert: I am not a huge fan of Depp or Paltrow. Both have played roles in the past that I enjoyed greatly but none of their recent movies stand out to me. Pink Panther by any other name is still the Pink Panther. The difference between Mortdecai and Inspector Jacques Clouseau is the title inspector. Mortdecai works for the inspector as sort of a free lance investigator. Everything else is the same except the supporting cast. Johnny Depp does a passable role but I grew up thinking Peter Sellers and David Niven. I don't even think of the most recent Steve Martin and I probably will not give Mortdecai more thought in the future either. Ms. Paltrow has the best performance in my opinion and she is responsible for whatever parts we can take seriously. Obviously this is a light movie that is not to be taken serious. There are some laughs sprinkled sparingly throughout the film.

This sleepy charmer kept reminding me of a movie from the 1960's. It was kind of funny and kind of formulaic, which actually made me like it better.. It was fun to watch an entertainment that was simply silly. Depp was quite good as the middle-aged art thief, morally squishy in some things but not in the important things. Some critics have said he was channeling Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies. Well then, Paltrow playing the sophisticated, sexually alluring wife does a pretty damn good Capucine. I believed Ewan McGregor was in fact forlornly in love with Paltrow. And Paul Bettany stood out as the world's best bodyguard, delivering deadpan humor whilst delivering kicks and jabs. So don't expect the funniest movie you've ever seen -- Peter Sellers is far the tops in that -- but just sit back, unwind, enjoy a mellow bit of silliness.

This was a surprise and a definite plus to my film library. It is funny and creative. I thoroughly was amazed at the actors so well-fitting into their roles.
I love the music. Lively, moving well in the plot and the surprises at the end that you don't see coming.
I was renting it from Netflix often. That's why I decided to go ahead and invest in this wonderful creation.
I dare you to not laugh. You will look at some reviews and wonder what film they were watching.
That's why I see films for myself most of the time. They are often wrong. Enjoy!
