5.0 out of 5 starsIt's a really decent tablet keyboard!
Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2024
Ok so it types well. Butterfly switch design is decent, with a little key wobble but nothing that will take you away from the experience all that much. Very solid feel for a very thin and light keyboard. The key sounds are very laptop like in every way, short actuation makes it very fast traveling if you have smaller fingers, which I don't so it took a little getting used to but very usable once you adapt. BlueTooth pairing was really easy with my tablet and I had zero issues. The keyboard is backlit in the various colors shown and is pretty vibrant so colors look amazing. The backlight doesn't stay on unless you're typing, unfortunately but I'm sure that's to save battery power. Not sure if you can change this option if it's plugged in, but maybe. It does work with windows as well so that's a plus even though I would never see myself using something this small on my desktop. Instructions are pretty clear, your results may vary depending on your device but I would definitely recommend this keyboard. As far as longevity I can't say as of yet because I've only had it for a week so far, but it's holding it's own in Word. So cost effective, colorful and types well. Pick it up!

3.0 out of 5 starsThings to like about this keyboard and good customer service
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2018
***Update: May 10, 2023***

The seller has contacted me again with an offer to send me an upgraded model of the keyboard I had previously. I complemented the excellent customer service in my last update several years ago and I have to reiterate that this customer service is really above and beyond what you can expect from most sellers. I will update again in a few days when I have received the new keyboard and had some time to play around with it.

***Update: March 28,2018***

As others have said, the customer service for this product is excellent. The seller contacted me to offer either a full refund or replacement keyboard. I actually opted to return the keyboard and go with a different model, the Logitech K380, but the seller said they would send me a replacement keyboard even though I had already completed a return because they wanted to fulfill the terms of the product warranty. Really can’t beat that kind of customer service. So, as I said in my original review (which you can see below), there are plenty of things to like about this keyboard. Hopefully the replacement keyboard will not develp the same problem as the first one.

***Update #2, March 12 2018***

Turns out that the arrow keys now work but a lot of other keys don't, including the a, s, d, f, l, and others. This makes the keyboard really pretty much unusable. Have again re-adjusted my rating. Will probably return this product. Not sure if for a replacement or refund. I like a lot of things about the keyboard, but if this model is not going to work reliably, then there doesn't seem to be a point in replacing it. Granted, it could be just a problem with this particular unit, but still not sure.

***Update, Mar 12, 2018***

The problem with the stuck keys seems to have resolved itself overnight. Hopefully it won't happen again. Re-adjusting my rating back up to 3 stars. I'm not adjusting it back up to the 4 stars I initially gave the keyboard, because of the problem with the stuck keys. The keyboard is still good for the price, but I'll now be looking out for further problems with the keyboard, and probably also looking for the price to drop on one of the more advanced models.

***Update Mar 11, 2018***

After using the keyboard for less than a week, several of the arrow keys are no longer working. The left and right arrow keys simply do not work at times, and at other times pressing left or right makes the cursor arrow down instead of moving in the correct direction. Also, I'm unable to execute any commands that require me to use the Voiceover modifier keys. Based on the behavior being displayed, I assume that the down arrow is stuck. I have tried disconnecting and re-pairing the device several times, including telling my phone to forget the device and paring as I would if it were the first time I was using the keyboard. I have tried both restarting my phone and shutting it down and turning it back on. I have been able to duplicate the problems on three different devices: my iPhone SE, my MacBook and my Apple TV 3. I plugged the keyboard in for a while to make sure it wasn't an issue with a low battery, but no such luck. The left arrow key began to work, but the right and down arrows still don't. I'm using the keyboard with Voiceover, so not being able to reliably use the arrow keys to move around the screen defeats a big part of the purpose of me having this keyboard. Because of this problem, I'm adjusting my rating from 4 stars to 1 star.

***************

I’ve been thinking about getting a bluetooth keyboard for use with my iPhone for a while now. I’m blind and use Voiceover, so typing on the phone, even with touch typing activated, is tedious if I’m typing anything longer than a quick text message reply. Since IOS 10, it seems like the dictation feature has declined in quality, so that’s no picnic to use either. So when my partner got one of these for her birthday, I was eager to try it out and see how it works. After playing with her keyboard a few times, I decided to get one of my own. For the price, it seems well worth it so far. It’s not made of heavy-duty stuff like some of the more expensive bluetooth keyboards out there, but again, for the price, it’s good.

Keep in mind when reading this review that some of it will be about general things and some of it will be specifically about using the keyboard with Voiceover in IOS.

For me, there are several pros with this keyboard.

First, it’s very slim and light weight. I can toss it in my messenger bag when I go out and it doesn’t increase the weight of the bag in any appreciable way, so carrying it around like that is no problem.

Second is the size. A few years ago, I had one of those bluetooth keyboard cases that you can put your phone in. It came in very handy, but it was still slowish to type on. It was good for me then because I didn’t carry around a bag at the time and I could just put the case on the phone, stick it in my pocket, and go. Since I’ve gotten a service dog, I now regularly carry a bag so as to have all the necessary dog stuff with me if I need it: poop bags, paper towels, wet naps, a few treats, that sort of thing. So because I now carry this bag regularly, I wanted something bigger than a mimi bluetooth keyboard, but not a bulky one like some of the other models I’ve seen. Also, I didn’t want one of the foldable or roll-up bluetooth keyboards because they are a pain to type on. I’ve tried one out before and I felt like I had to press down harder on the keys than I would on a more solid keyboard. Because I’ve also got some arthritis starting to affect my hands, I wanted something that would feel closer to touch typing on a laptop keyboard. This keyboard is just the right size so that I can easily touch type as I would on a laptop, and the spring of the keys is very close to that of the keyboard on my MacBook.

Third, it’s easy to connect initially. Flip the on/off switch, push the paring button, go to the bluetooth menu in your phone settings, select the keyboard, and you’re in business.

Fourth, this keyboard not only makes it easier and more pleasant to do stuff like writing and replying to FB posts, tweeting, and word processing, but it also seems to work with several of the text adventure apps I have. It’s easier and quicker to be able to just type in commands on this keyboard than it is to have to flick around on the screen to find the link you need to activate to go a certain direction or interact with a certain object, or type out commands with the on-screen keyboard. This may lead to me doing more gaming on my phone, which may or may not be a good thing, but it’s cool that this keyboard makes the experience of doing so more pleasant.

Fifth, of course, is the price. Your not going to break the bank buying this keyboard. Unless you use it on multiple devices at once and need a model that allows you to switch back and forth from controlling device A to device B to device C with only a button press, this is going to do the job for you.

There are also a few cons.

First, and the biggest con for me, the keyboard does not automatically remap the four keys to the left of the spacebar from the Windows layout (Ctrl > Windows key/function key > Option > Alt) to the Mac keyboard layout (Function > Ctrl > Option > Command). If you use a MacBook and you’re very used to keying in commands with the Mac keyboard layout, this may take a bit of getting used to. Instead of holding down the two middle keys as the Voiceover modifier keys, you have to hold down the key at the far left and the key twice to the right of it. It’s not the end of the world, but it makes keying in some of the Voiceover shortcuts in IOS a bit annoying because the fingering is weird. That said, you can also go into the Voiceover setting on your phone and set the Caps Lock key as your Voiceover modifier, as you might if you were using Jaws on a laptop. As far as non-Voiceover shortcuts go, most of them use only the Command key as a modifier, so it’s no different keying them in than it would be on either a Windows machine or a Mac. This would be no problem at all if there were a way built into IOS to remap the keyboard. I have read that there actually is a way to do it on an iPad but it doesn’t seem that there is any way to do it on an iPhone.

Second, I’ve had trouble reconnecting the keyboard to my phone. I had to go into my bluetooth settings, tell the phone to forget the keyboard, and then pair it again. As I said earlier though, pairing is easy, so this is really a minor annoyance. I have had the keyboard only about two-and-a-half days, and this has happened to me only once, so keep that in mind as well. If it starts happening consistently, then it will be more a problem than a minor annoyance.

Third, I have experienced the issue that other reviewers have written about where the keys can sometimes stick and instead of outputting a character once, the keyboard will output that character a bunch of times. As of now, it doesn’t happen enough to be much of a problem for me, and it’s simple enough to just hit Option + Backspace to erase the last word and start over at the beginning of the word. If this starts happening at a frequency where it becomes a problem, I’ll amend the review.

Fourth, you are apparently supposed to be able to hit the Esc key twice to open the app switcher in IOS. This command has sporadically worked for me before on my partner’s keyboard, but has not worked on mine as of yet. Of course, if you’re using Voiceover, you can get to the app switcher by hitting Ctrl + Option + H twice quickly, but again, the fingering of the shortcut is a bit weird because the keyboard doesn’t remap to the Mac layout, so it would be more convenient to be able to just hit the Esc key twice. Again, this is really a minor annoyance in the big scheme of things.

So, for my money, this keyboard is totally worth it, especially if you can’t justify spending $70 or more on one of the more advanced and durable models but you don’t want to wait who knows how long for one of them to go on sale.

I hope this review has been useful both re general concerns and also for Voiceover-specific concerns. If it has, and you feel so incline, shoot me a thumbs-up on the review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for on the go gaming or for typing reports on the go.

I bought this to use for light remote gaming and it worked well. It is also perfect for typing reports on your phone or tablet. It's slim and compact making it easy to pack and take anywhere. I use it a lot on the go when I need to type fairly long reports and I also use it for certain games that work better with keyboards. It isn't very ergonomic because of its slim design but it isn't really meant to be used for long periods. It's mostly built for convenience of on the go keyboard support. Oh and works well in meetings as well if you rather type notes into your phone or tablet instead of hand jamming. Backlit keys help in dim areas especially on airplanes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Became unusable after a couple of months (keys stuck) [Waiting for replacement]

Update: Arteck has offered to send a replacement due to warranty, so, I'll edit the review. Hopefully the issue was only with mine and the replacement works, because I really need this keyboard.

Initially, I was very excited about this keyboard. I had been looking for a slim, light, backlit wireless keyboard to use between my tablet and my laptop, and this seemed to be the best option, and one of the few where the letters would actually light up instead of just a light coming from under the keys.

It was easy to connect to both my tablet and my computer, but there was no way to switch between devices, which wasn't tragic, but I'd just have to disconnect and connect to the other device every time. Slightly annoying, but understandable and I could deal with that.

I started noticing that the battery was lasting less and less every time, but that didn't bother me much as I could just plug it and continue working and then just leave it charging.

The real issue started when the space key started acting up randomly. At first it was a double space, then it was the key pressing itself one or two times at random without having even touched it, then it was long presses of the key as if I was holding it and wouldn't stop unless I repeatedly pressed the key or turned off the keyboard. Now, the space key just acts as if it's being constantly pressed. It will go indefinitely, wake up the keyboard after it has been in "sleep mode" for only a couple of seconds, and finally it's just constantly pressed. As soon as I turn on the keyboard, it's just infinite spacing making it impossible to type two letters, and the constant pressing has made it so apps or games with keybinds just crash from the constant input.

It has become literally unusable, there has been no work around it and it happens in any device I connect it to. I tried cleaning it deeply, disassembling it, even removing the space key and with the key removed it would still go, so this one will have to end up in the garbage. A bummer because the keyboard was actually kinda cute and sleek and I loved the lighting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little keyboard!

I have used this keyboard for 5 years with my Macbook and iPad, and it's worked really well. It's so small and light, making it really portable. I have taken it on work trips when I didn't want to carry my whole laptop set up, with just an iPad, which worked well. I don't use the backlight so I can't speak to that, but I use it daily for work and have been really happy with the keyboard's performance since I got it.

Recently, some of the keys stopped working and Arteck Support was on top of it. I emailed them and they are sending me a replacement right away, free of charge. How awesome is that!? I look forward to many years of using my new keyboard - it's perfect for my purposes. I would highly recommend this keyboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Solid and Nicely-Sized Device

I bought this after the E key on my laptop broke off and took a part of the keyboard frame that would keep it in place with it. Tired of trying to repair it, I got this lil thing. It was a bit small for me until I got used to it, but I feel it's worth the price.

The Bluetooth connects straight away, and I like that it tries to save it's own battery by going into "sleep mode" when I pause from writing. It's not clunky and is very lightweight. The backlighting helps me see clearly, too. I basically live through my computer due to illness, so this works great.

One downside I'd say is that it is a bit delicate, but it's also a small and thin piece of equipment. You get what you pay for, plus some.

Another downside, which is why I rated 4 stars for gaming, is that the Command/Windows and Alt keys are in different places than usual on the left side. I've accidentally pressed Windows when I meant Alt and vice versa several times. It's a small issue overall.

I still rate this 5 stars because, after the charge plug broke, because of the warranty, they sent me a free new one with a warranty on it as well. I'm hoping it doesn't break again, but if it does, I won't have to worry too much.

It's a nice little thing. I use it for my laptop, but I imagine it would work great with a phone, too. Look for other reviews to make sure, though.

Back in July of 2020, I bought the predecessor to this keyboard - Arteck HB030B - which I absolutely loved - just wished I could switch back and forth between my Windows PC (later replaced with a Chromebook), my Samsung Galaxy Pro 12.2 and my Note 8 (replaced by a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3)... But it was quiet, the battery lasted a long time, it fit in my bag perfectly, I loved the backlight function, it worked great with Windows, Chrome OS, and Android, and it paired easily between my devices so I was as happy as I could be. Fast-forward 3 years, and I still loved it so much - unfortunately I managed to get some crumb or something stuck in it. I felt that after 3 years of its' devoted service to me, it didn't owe me anything when I only spent $19.99 and hadn't expected anything like the quality I'd received from it. I went to re-order it on Amazon and was offered the suggestion of a newer version (a dollar cheaper, too - lol!) so I took a look.. It looked the same, except... Hmmm... What the heck did they go and make 3 blue keys for?!? Wait a sec - is that - YES!!! 3 Bluetooth devices can be paired and switched through - I ordered it immediately, and it's as amazing as my first keyboard but switches between the Chromebook and two Androids like a knife slicing through hot butter... THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR ANOTHER AWESOME ARTECK BT KEYBOARD!!! I'm STILL a very happy customer! FULL DISCLOSURE: I had the pleasure of typing this review on my phone using the keyboard I'm reviewing... I don't think the keyboard injected any of its' personal biases, but I can admit that it can be very persuasive once you use it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing keyboard; excellent value

I bought this keyboard for use with an iPad. An external keyboard allows you to utilise all the screen on the iPad (since you don't need the soft keys, they disappear). It's really made a difference using Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) on my iPad, and my productivity on any single document has improved several times over. Out of curiosity, I connected it to my laptop and I have to admit, I like it better than the space grey Apple keyboard I normally use. You're not supposed to put prices in these reviews, so I'll say it this way: you could buy seven Arteck keyboards for the price of one Apple keyboard. It's important to note that the Arkteck keyboard does not have a number pad, and the key spacing is slightly smaller than the Apple keyboard, but I don't think this has a significant impact on use.

Pros:
Ergonomic--I have large hands and long fingers, but I find the keys perfectly spaced; moreover, the height of each key contributes to a tactile reach, meaning that my fingers are better able to find each key by memory, which is not always the case with keyboards with much smaller key profiles; and the click-and-clatter of the keys is pleasant rather than jarring. The keyboard is extremely thin and light (but a weighty light, not a cheap light, if you get my meaning), and easily fits in my briefcase, attache bag, backpack, desk drawer, etc.

Inexpensive--definitely not very expensive, but it has the weights and appearance, and general design of a more expensive keyboard; this keyboard's cost is so low, in fact, I bought several to give t the family, and to have at home and the office, as well as one that lives in my backpack for those just-in-case times.

Back-lit keys--changing the colour of the back-light is fun, but the back-lit keys as such are extremely valuable when you find yourself in low-light situations; also, the lighting has two settings so you can find the one that best fits your eyes and the available ambient light.

Charge--The technical specifications indicate 366 hours of non-stop use without the back-light. I can't say I've tried to run it in such a way as to test the claim precisely, but, using the backlight for about three hours in the evening and no backlight for around five hours during the day five days a week, and around half that on weekends, I can report that I haven't charged the keyboard for the three weeks that I've owned it, and it's worked perfectly the entire time. This isn't particularly different from my experience with the Apple keyboard, which has no back-light.

Durability--I'm not particularly careless with the keyboard, but I've dropped it a couple times on a hard tile floor and experienced no issues with either its cosmetic appearance or utility.

Cons:
No number pad--this is the only issue I have with this keyboard, but to add a number pad would negate the form factor and one of its key features, size, since it is deliberately designed to be small and ultra-portable. However, if you are used to a number pad, you will notice not having one and it can make working on documents with lots of calculations a bit more trying than you might like.

4.0 out of 5 stars customer service comes thru when keyboard gets iffy.

after noting my review in its original form (shown below), the customer service people reached out to me very politely by email and offered to send me a replacement keyboard. i felt this was rather kind of them and helpful since i hadn't complained directly to them for a resolution. i'd also forgotten that they had originally offered a warranty period, otherwise i would have brought it to their attention directly. instead i had just believed that this type of keyboard wasn't going to be a very good solution for me. it took a small bit of time to get the replacement arranged. they asked that i agree to change my review, which in my mind is a fair request. i've seen reviews that show progress over time because something has broken or performed strangely and then the seller's customer service comes thru and likely the replacement product is stellar, suggesting what we all know: every so often there is a dud in a batch and every so often it gets thru quality control.

i really liked the original keyboard for nearly a year before i had any issue with it. seller's customer service team found my issue and sent me a free replacment. the replacement works perfectly, just as the original one did. i appreciate several features: the backlit keys, the infrequency that it needed recharging, ease of recharging, slim profile. i also found it worked just fine with my laptop, an old macbook pro from 2011. the only irregularity i had was that because of the different operating system i was using a different key combination for keyboard shortcuts. if memory serves i was using the Win key in place of apple's command key (which has the funky symbol that looks like # with loops connecting the horizontal and vertical lines at the ends). this allowed me to use keyboard commands to print and resize pages, cancel, take advantage of apple's built in spotlight search, etc. the only thing i couldn't do with this keyboard that i could do with the failing one built into my laptop was use it to perform a force quit. i think that was because either the escape or option key didn't register the same to the OS.

i also used the keyboard to type on my ipad mini (a very old model there as well; before fancy retina displays, possibly ipad mini v2) i was able to get the device to recognize the keyboard. originally i thought i might often use it as a keyboard for both the laptop and the tablet, but it was trickier to get the tablet to recognize it. it just had to be on for the laptop to see and allow it, but the tablet would force me into deleting and adding and re-pairing. it wasn't a lot of trouble, but i decided quickly to just limit it to my laptop.

i didn't think of it at the time, but it is possible that the reason the first Arteck keyboard failed had to do with it getting hot sitting on top of my laptop keyboard. it never was dramatically hot, but thinking back i can imagine a wireless keyboard might not be most likely imagined sitting directly on a laptop keyboard, which does warm up a bit, but not as much as the bottom of a laptop that might burn the skin. i didn't give any thought as to whether or not that could cause a problem. i did notice that one of the screws in the back loosened. i tightened it, but that did't improve the performance once it had stopped responding to certain key presses.

i had rated the keyboard a 3 because of issues with the first one. customer service was very helpful, polite, etc. and exceeded my expectations, so i can definitely give them an extra star for that. i tested the replacement keyboard, which performed perfectly, so i'd consider giving them 5 stars, but i haven't continued to use it. it has nothing to do with Arteck and their keyboards. in the time between when i gave up on the first keyboard out of frustration and when i got a replacement for it, i secured my own replacement in the form of a reconditioned portable wireless keyboard from apple. it's not the newest version either, LOL. it cost me 50% more than this one, but i have been thrilled that since it comes from the same maker as my laptop all the function keys work as if they were being pressed on my built in keyboard. (words like thrilling and delightful might seem over the top in relation to something so mundane as a keyboard, but anyone who has had intermittent or consistent trouble with an original keyboard will understand the very basic and throrough frustration of typing something properly only to have it misrepresented AND unable to be corrected because one or more keys is rebelling at the time.) if i didn't have another keyboard that i liked as well in general and better for specific applications (like changing the screen view, brightness, volume, etc.) i'm sure i would have continued to use the replacement keyboard after just testing it. if i had already received the apple keyboard before Arteck offered the replacement, i would have told them i didn't need one and wouldn't use it. timing is the issue. there was a bit of a delay that was my fault because customer service was asking me a few questions and i wasn't sure at first what they meant. actually i should/may use the replacement keyboard as one dedicated to my tablet. i suspect that might help with the issue of needing re-pairing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but could be great

**Update** went from 3 to 4 stars. I do still have some small gripes with the design of the keyboard as detailed below, however, Arktek reached out to me and offered to send me a free replacement to resolve my issues. I declined as another keyboard of the same model would have the same issues but that is amazing customer service.

Original review:

I do really like the keyboard but it has two very simple issues that, if they were fixed, I would give it 5 stars.

First, the alt and windows keys are reversed from a typical keyboard. Usually from bottom left it goes ctrl, fn, windows key, alt with alt being closest to the spacebar but on this keyboard it is ctrl, fn, alt, windows key. I bought this for a lightweight gaming setup that I can take to work to play games during my downtime. Having the alt key in a different spot is not ideal as I use it for hot keys in games as well as alt tabbing.

Secondly, it slides all over the place. The back of the keyboard is completely flat and smooth so it never stays in one place and I find myself having to reposition it often. I bought some low profile adhesive rubber pads to attach to the bottom which cost $6 on amazon and this has made the experience a lot better. This should be a standard feature on the keyboard.

Otherwise, I have had no issues with bluetooth connectivity or any sort of functionality issues. It does everything I expect it to. The color change feature is a nice addition. The keyboard is extremely light weight and compact to the point where I have to double check that I remembered to put it in my bag because while it is in my bag, the size and weight is imperceptible. It adds virtually no bulk or weight.

TLDR
Pros:
- Good bluetooth connectivity (didn't test range as I use it right next to my device)
- Extremely lightweight and compact
- Functions as expected
- Color change backlighting is nice

Cons:
- Alt and windows key locations are swapped from what I'm used to
- Smooth back surface with no rubber feet means the keyboard doesn't stay in one place
