Due to doctor's orders, I've been drinking only decaf for years, and have climbed the ladder to very high quality coffee making equipment, basically a smaller version of the powerful, heavy gear I used in a cafe I owned, or like you'd see in any good cafe.

I usually switch back and forth between saving money and using Trader Joe's beans, and spending a lot for the best beans I can find as a treat, like Chris's Coffee, Peet's, Blue Bottle, Joe, Intelligensia Black Cat, Grumpy, etc, and I always have my eye open for something in the middle... a great coffee that makes espresso for americanos and milk-based drinks like lattes, cappuccinos, and my wife loves mochas with a few kinds of chocolate mixed in. Plus, her family is from Brazil, so there's the added pressure of living up to the quality of coffee they're all used to!

On occasion, Costco has had 2 or 5lb bags of high quality decaf beans, but for the past year I've only found it once, every time I've been lately they have 5-8 types of excellent caff, but no decaf. So I went on the hunt on Amazon and found these beans. I didn't expect too much for about $10/lb (the same or maybe even less than Trader Joe's French Roast decaf), but the reviews were really good, and importantly, it was Swiss Water decaf, the cleanest decaf process involving no toxins or chemicals.

And I (and my wife) are incredibly impressed by the quality, smell, taste, and did I say QUALITY of these beans? I hope they don't use my positive review, or all of them, to raise prices, but to be honest, I would pay a little more for these beans. I owned a cafe for 10 years and probably made close to a half a million coffee drinks in that decade, and would've been fine with these beans then or now if I opened another one.

Satisfying taste, excellent value

I was searching for a medium dark roast decaf coffee that had a robust flavor, but without the bitter, burnt taste of many of the dark roast or French roast varieties. This was exactly what I was looking for. The beans are dark, somewhat oily and very aromatic. I specifically look for the oiliness as an indication of the kind of roasting that I prefer. The appearance of the beans and the strong aroma told me it was reasonably fresh. I grind the beans fresh for each pot and prepare it quite strong, compared to preference of most people I know. It is rich, delicious and satisfying without any bitterness. I defy anyone to tell that it is decaf. The price makes it an excellent value. I hope the Verena Street people maintain consistency, because I intend to buy this again when my supply runs out.

Very Pronounced Flavors, Smells Amazing

The 'Cow Tipper' is easily the best coffee that I've ever had. Nice medium roast without any acidic or bitter taste. The smell of the coffee beans with the added flavoring is very powerful. I grind the whole beans by hand in a mortar and pestle and my kitchen smells like vanilla, caramel & coffee for hours. Make sure you use filtered water and brew it at 195-200 degrees (30 seconds from boil) to avoid leaching out excessive bitterness that you get with water that is too hot. The whole beans are nice because they still have all of the great oils on the inside and outside of the beans that gets lost to a degree when you get it pre-ground. The oily grounds can gum up coffee grinders though.
Again, this is easily the best coffee I've ever had. The added flavors are very pronounced before, during, and after brewing. I can't say that I actually taste them in the brewed coffee, but you can certainly smell them. I'm going to set up the subscription/auto delivery and get a 2lb bag every moth or two.

I'm sorry but all the positive reviews are misleading. Tastes about like Folgers Decaff drip to me. I had been buying Starbucks Samatra Decaff and love its full robust flavor...Unfortunately both my local stores quit caring it..People like their Caffeine fix around here and we decaf drinkers are few and far between I guess.

Back to this coffee: Have you ever had or made a pot of drip coffee and feel like your tasting the paper filter? That's what this coffee tastes like. It smells great out of the bag or grinder but it does not trans fer that flavor to the cup. We use carbon block purified water too.

I really wanted to find an alternative to Starbucks in retaliation for them not stocking my coffee any longer... But the search goes on as this is definitely NOT it.. I doubt I will even be able to finish the 2 lbs.. I almost gave it 1 star but "Hate" is to strong of a critique.. I can drink it.its just not good at all. Taste's like a mediocre house coffee at IHOP or Denney's or McDonald's. There is absolutely nothing that excites me into wanting to brew a cup of this in the morning.. and I actually haven't and gone without the last couple days. I'm drinking a cup right now just to confirm an accurate review and its getting cold because its just so BLAGH! Maybe 1 star is appropriate....but I save "Hate" for very vile things. Like Horse Radish.

The Verena Street Coffee had such great reviews I just had to try it and I couldn't buy just one small bag to try it. No, I'm an overachiever and bought the 2 pound bag of Espresso, 2 pound bag of Sunday Drive Decaf, the 12 ounce bag of Sumatra and the 12 ounce bag of Cow Tipper. So many great reviews it has to be good, right???

To be fair, I bought a second bag of the Cow Tipper as it was the best of the bunch, but these others are awful! I've ground the beans fresh and tried them both with a Chemex and a French Press and the Espresso and Sumatra were bad. The Decaf Sunday Drive was just plain awful.

I was really hoping this brand would be good but it tasted (to me) like bad generic coffee that had been sitting all night and instead of cleaning the pot and making fresh, someone just made a new pot without dumping out the old stuff first. (Military coffee)

For those of you who like this I'm happy you found something you enjoy, but for me this was not it! The Cow Tipper is okay. Not great, but I did buy a second bag.

I want to support American companies and especially those in the Midwest/Heartland. I wish I could continue to support these guys (Verena Street) because they have incredibly fast shipping and the boxes are packed really well but the coffee just is not that good to me.

I'm a single origin guy. I like bright Costa Rican and acidic, wine Ethiopian natural and honey processed coffees. I aeropress most of the coffee I drink, and use a pour over for bulk brewing. I have a professional grinder and use a digital scale and temp controlled kettle. I'm THAT kind of coffee snob. Having said that, this coffee is the only flavored coffee that I not only will drink, but look forward to its place in my rotation.

What they have done here is magic. They took caramel, butterscotch and hazelnut (or is it walnut?) and tastefully infused a wonderfully medium roasted bean with a precise hand at the throttle. Drink it black, I do. And that's saying something as most flavored coffee is cheap harsh commodity grade stuff that needs cream and sugar to be tolerated.

Then they offer it for a very reasonable price, and it's my understanding that they roast in batches, hense the occasional lulls in availability. I find 2lbs too much to get through in my 5-6 bean rotation in time, so I split the bag with someone, but if you like good quality and highly affordable flavored coffee, you've found all you might ever need. Gosh, it's good chilled over ice, too.

I'm contemplating trying their other varieties as well. It's great stuff, if for some reason you don't like it, make a cup for a friend and ask if they want the bag. I guarantee there are not two people in any given area that both dislike this coffee. It's not possible.

**EDIT 5-19-20**

It’s still just as good! We have increased our consumption of this to where we can’t share the bag anymore.

Also, don’t hesitate to try the Cow Tipper, I don’t know which I like more now vs the Mississippi Grog, but we find ourselves enjoying Verena street even a little more on weekends when we have time to enjoy coffee throughout the day. I send a ground pouch out to my mother and have got a couple friends to try and enjoy.

There’s nothing like single origin beans, but don’t miss out on a well brewed cup of Verena St, with a good, well thought out flavor that is strong but not overwhelming. If for some reason you don’t like it, give it to another coffee drinker you know, I bet they will.

Try if you like alcohol and butterscotch

I was really looking for hazelnut and knew it wasn't the primary aroma and flavor. It's worth a try if you like alcohol and butterscotch.

In the bag the butterscotch aroma is very strong. Maybe caramel is there too but I couldn't really differentiate caramel and hazelnut from the butterscotch. There's also a burnt smell which I liked.

After brewing maybe half the aroma was gone and it tasted light to medium roast. The butterscotch was noticeable. Not sure how to describe it but it was kind of like a sharp, medicine syrup, maybe rum, in taste and aroma. I wasn't really sure I could taste the caramel and hazelnut. Maybe the flavors are too complicated. This is using about 1.5 tablespoon of coffee to water ratio.

Overall I think alcohol and butterscotch fans will like it and the aroma stands out. They definitely made it unique. I bet their other flavors would be unique too but I'm going to continue looking for hazelnut elsewhere. I hope they come out with hazelnut.

I love coffee. My doctors confirmed a heart issue. I still love coffee, so it was either drink any coffee I could get my hands on that made me giddy with pleasure and made all my troubles fade away or live longer. Let me tell you, I had a long and arduous inner dialogue going on. I completely ignored the physicians and their pedantic warnings about caffeine while I toiled and fretted over the "do you choose curtain number one or curtain number two?" dilemma. I thunk and thunk, and after I had a good thunk, I decided I'd try caffeine-free coffee again. I always likened it to hot river water. In fact, I often said, "caffeine-free coffee and tea is a waste of hot water." So, I tried some coffees and hated it. I especially hated the blasphemous processes in which some coffees are subjected to rid them of the blissful caffeine. So, I decided on the Swiss Water Process and then started looking at coffees that used THAT process. I am glad I found Verena Street, Sunday Drive, Whole Bean. It is good. It is very good. There is no metallic after taste, no acidic bite and it is as smooth as West Coast Jazz. This really is a good coffee and when I first opened the bag, I swear I heard a choir strike up Vivaldi's "Gloria." It is sooo good in the French Press and even good with Keurig if you happen to have the more advanced machine that allows hotter water and a slower, stronger brew. I buy whole bean coffee and grind it as I need it. By buying the Whole Bean, the coffee stays fresher longer and there is less oxidation going on. Store the beans in a vacuum-sealer jar, if you have it. If you also toss in a few oxygen-absorbing pads, sold separately on Amazon, then the beans stay baby fresh--and... don't store your beans in the freezer or refrigerator. Ever. Now you know!

I can drink most anything, but, I am going to have a difficult time with this stuff. I think it has asphalt from the repave of Verena Street as a flavoring. It is robust in being bitter and unkind. It is no where close qualitatively to any other comparably reviewed and priced products on Amazon or at your local grocer. It is also terrible that Amazon groups all the reviews of this firm's product together. It does not allow well discernment. Truly, it is the worst coffee I have ever had.
