This bag is worth every penny you will spend. Let me begin by saying this is the perfect size for carry on in regional/business/commercial aircraft. I was able to fit this easily into overheads on a CRJ-900, -700, EMB 145, 777LR, and A340-600.

I took this bag for one week to Germany and Poland. I also checked a bag because this was for a work trip, so in this bag i carried the following items and still had space to spare. This bag was perfect for quick switch between travel backpack and office satchel. It was able to hold very large bottles of water. The extra straps inside to tighten down and on the outside made it easier to reduce the bag profile. If you watch the youtube videos on this please note it's what they say it is. Your success will come on how you organize it. With that being said, there are not a lot of pockets etc.. In the second picket there is a zipper mesh pocket, and a tablet/laptop sleeve. However if you have pack like i listed below it would be wise to have ziploc bags for different groups of items. It helps keep it organized.

Now for mobility. I pulled two hail Mary runs on my return trip home. And when i say runs, i mean full sprint dodging babies and the elderly - jumping luggage and chairs. In both Munich and Chicago i literally grabbed the shoulder straps, the chest strap, and waist strap and pulled them tight. And it was a flawless run, with no fear of the bag falling off or interfering with my ability to run.

Perfect for a 2.5 week trip to Europe

After much research, I purchased three of these, two black and one red, all small/medium, for a recent 17 day trip to Europe. My husband and I used the black ones and my fifteen year old daughter used the red one. They worked beautifully! We each took four outfits, plus the ones we wore, so five total, two pairs of shoes, plus toiletries (my daughter took her full size flat iron), hoodies/jackets, and raincoats. While my daughter and I each had a separate (Travelon) bag, my husband put his electronics (iTouch, 10" Kindle Fire) in his backpack. I also put a full size heavy duty plastic zip top file folder in mine with all of our travel documents, tickets, etc. (in the laptop sleeve). We did very little shopping as that's not our thing, but my daughter did pick up a pair of high tops in Paris and had no problem bringing them home.

We moved from cooler weather in Paris and Salzburg to warmer weather in Venice and Rome, necessitating a wide ranging wardrobe. Using Eagle Creek packing cubes, I was able to pack the following in my pack: a pair of jeans, a medium length skirt, two knee length skirts, a pair of gym weight capris, four tees, a pair of PJs, five pairs of underwear, one bra, two pairs of socks, a car coat length heavy hooded LL Bean raincoat, a pair of Toms, two toiletry bags (a TSA one and another), a small make up bag, a bag with ten medication bottles, a large heavy plastic zip top envelope with all travel documents and tickets, and a small bag of misc necessities (small USB cords, small caribiners, etc.). The bag weighed about 15 lbs packed and I had plenty of room left. On the return trip, I easily found room for a very well bubble wrapped small ceramic gift item, a t-shirt, and a boxed shot glass. I could certainly have brought more home. My six foot tall husband packed, using cubes, a pair of jeans, three pairs of cargo shorts, PJ pants, four tees, underwear, undershirts, a raincoat, a pair of shoes, his dopp kit + TSA bag, Kindle, iTouch, charging cords, plug adapter kit, and had room to spare. His packed bag weighed 17 lbs.

Converting these bags from backpacks to duffles, to take on and off planes and some trains, was a breeze. The back panel unzips and rolls down, securing with Velcro at the bottom and releasing the straps. In reverse, just separate the Velcro, tuck the straps and zip up. The process is very fast and very easy and we found the bags easy to carry with the handles or the messenger bag strap. A key for me is that I also found that the messenger strap didn't get in the way when I was using the bag as a backpack, a plus since I didn't want to hassle with unclipping it and putting it back.

We found these to be very comfortable. My stubborn fifteen year old whined about hers until she let her Dad adjust her straps and convince her to use her sternum strap and hip belt. Then she also found it comfortable! I won't pretend we used them every day, though. We carried them about every four days, from apartments through Metro stations, onto trains, and walking to apartments. We also carried them in airports and transporting to and fro. It was absolutely enough to get a sense of how they feel, but not a sense of their durability, though I expect they'd do very well. We were on Air Canada the whole way to and from Europe and had no problem carrying these on.

I would recommend these packs without reservation. In retrospect, my husband would have gone with the next size up. He had no problems at all with the small/medium as far as packing it, but thinks he might have preferred the feel of the larger pack on his back. He has used this pack on two other trips and been happy with it both of those times, as well.

We purchased the Osprey Porter 30 with the attached Daylite pack for my twelve year old and I'll post reviews for those, too.

The BEST bag for lightweight international travel

I read about this bag on a couple travel blogs where it received high praise. I figured it was worth a shot since it was on sale on Amazon with a free Prime return.

First Impressions:
My first surprise was at how small it was coming out of the box, and I was unsure how much it would actually fit because of the oblong shell shape. I had read that it is undersized for the carry-on limits for airplane travel - even on international flights, where the dimension restrictions are even smaller - but it still seemed too small. The second surprise came when I did the test pack and it just kept swallowing everything I had planned on packing. I figured I would have to buy compression bags to make this thing work, but they were unnecessary. The shape is a little strange, but once I figured out the best way to balance my bulky items (shoes, toiletry kit, etc), I actually opened up more space than I needed. After playing with all the straps and carrying configurations, I decided to keep it.

In Use:
This bag did everything I needed it to do on a two week trip to Italy. It easily slipped into the overhead compartment on all my flights, and it even fit in the tiny luggage racks above the seats on all the trains. The backpack straps and waist band adjusted easily to balance the weight. It was more comfortable to wear it when we were waiting in line at airports and train stations than to take it off and set it down. When we got to our gates and terminals, the straps quickly zip into their compartment, and the single shoulder strap clips in even faster. The single shoulder strap isn't comfortable for longer durations, but was perfect for the short amount of time while boarding/disembarking, and makes the bag easy to navigate those tight space (I hate when people carry backpacks or purses behind them and slap everyone down the aisle).

The compression straps do a great job not only keeping everything in place, but also adding a layer of security. The exterior straps are mounted by another layer of ripstop fabric that encases all the zippers, making them difficult to locate and access while strapped down tightly. This costs you a couple seconds and extra effort if you need to get into the bag while you're on the go, but there is no way for someone to easily get into the bag while out of sight on your back without you knowing. The zippers are paired, so you can lock them with a small padlock if that's your thing.

Summary:
Osprey hit the mark when they designed this bag. If you like to travel light and agile, you will enjoy this bag. It won't top the ease and accessibility of a rolling suitcase in an airport, but it's close. For someone who was traveling to remote areas and old cities, having everything off the ground was much easier 99% of the time (verified after watching my friend pull his suitcase half a mile, uphill, on cobblestones).

I paired my Farpoint 40 with a much smaller ripstop bag (for easy under seat access on flights/trains and short excursions away from our airBnBs) and it was perfect: Gonex Ultra Lightweight Packable Backpack Hiking Daypack Handy Foldable Camping Outdoor Travel Cycling Backpacking(Red)

If I didn't need it I could easily stuff it into my larger bag. Both pictured here while waiting for my wife as she shopped for a purse in the Venice airport. The comfort and utility were worth looking like a doofus.

Worked Well on Recent Trip to Europe

I recently replaced my old travel pack with this, and couldn't be happier. Here are a few of the features that worked well for me:

* Carry-on size fit well in the planes we flew, except puddle jumpers here in rural US. The straps all hide away in a really nicely designed stow cover for these cases. There is a convenient handle on the side to carry like a duffel, too.

* I really like the design of the pockets on this pack. It has a slightly-padded laptop pouch, compression straps, and a couple of outer pockets plus mesh. I packed my regular clothes, running clothes, and some extra layers for a week in Paris in February and didn't do any laundry. If anything I overpacked, and this bag handled it well.

* This bag has proper, rigid support. It was comfortable to carry on my bag traversing airports, waiting in customs and security lines, etc.

* The Daylite bag is a great companion for this. I bought both.

I have previous had warranty work done on an Osprey hiking bag that had a closure strap simply worn out from frequent use. They fixed it, no questions asked, and sent me stickers and candy with the repaired bag. Their customer service is top notch, easy to contact, and has a personal touch.

Great bag, but ended up getting the Fairview 40 instead

I am a 5'3" woman who travels a lot and likes to travel light. I was looking for a carry-on sized backpack that was comfortable to carry, easy to pack/unpack, and small enough to fit easily in overhead bins. After a lot of research, I decided that Osprey was the way to go. I tried the following Osprey bags:

1) Osprey Packs Porter 46 Travel Backpack, Mineral Teal, One Size
2) Osprey Packs Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack, Volcanic Grey, Small/Medium
3) Osprey Packs Fairview 40 Travel Backpack, Rainforest Green, Small/Medium

I initially bought the Porter and the Farpoint to do a side-by-side comparison, because they were priced comparably on Amazon (~$135 for each). To test, I loaded each one with a "full load" of mixed items, books, clothing, etc. I then donned the backpacks, adjusted the straps, and proceeded to walk around my bedroom a few turns.

I was able to eliminate the Porter as a contender pretty quickly by doing this test. I found that the Porter did not have the internal support for significant weight. When fully loaded, the plastic backboard "buckled" and pressed against my lower back in an uncomfortable way. So I returned in the Porter. One note is that I did like the internal design of the Porter better, but I just couldn't justify keeping it when it was so uncomfortable to carry.

Around this time, the Fairview went on sale, and I was able to snag it for a mere $120 (~$40 cheaper than it is currently listed on Amazon). I purchased the Fairview and proceeded to perform the same load test to compare it to the Farpoint. This was a more difficult decision, as the Fairview and Farpoint are almost identical. But I found the Fairview adjusted a little easier to my small frame and the hip belt sat a little more comfortably. This mirrored what I had read in reviews, so eventually I decided to return the Farpoint and keep the Fairview.

Perfect for one bag travel

This is the fourth bag I've tried for one bag travel and it's the best one so far. It's quite roomy at 40 liters but packs up into looking like a large backpack. The bag is about 3 lbs. The main compartment also opens up flat (like traditional luggage) so it's easy to find things when you open it up. I use two packing cubes (medium for clothes, small for undergarments) and have room to spare for two pairs of shoes (or more) in the main compartment.

The thing that might bother some is that the laptop sleeve is in the front zip; it's ok for my MacBook Air but not sure how it would fare for others with a heavier laptop. Depends how you pack the rest of your bag as well.

The front compartment is very roomy and this is where I store my cables/chargers and toiletry bag.

Then there is a tiny zip pocket at the very front/top where you can fit things you might need on the go like pens, granola bars, etc.

One of my favorite things about the bag aside from the quality of its build are the straps. They are well-cushioned and use a suspension system (not sure how it works but you can adjust the tension above your shoulders). There are also a chest strap and hip strap. Out of the bags I've tried (Patagonia MLC, Tom Bihn Tristar, Tom Bihn Aeronaut 30- my second runner up), this bag is the comfiest and I've used it for a couple international travels already with no discomfort. I should mention I have severe arthritis in my cervical spine and both shoulders.

The last thing I should mention is when you stow the bag away in the bag hold or under the seat in front of you on a flight, you can zip away the straps and hip belt with a covering that is rolled up into the back/bottom part of the bag. Pretty awesome way to keep the straps from getting caught on anything.

Love this bag. I read many reviews here and elsewhere as well as watched videos before buying it and the reviews weren't lying. If you are trying to do one bag travel, this may be the bag. Of course this bag would also be perfect for weekend trips. I've read on other sites not to use this for activities with long hikes or treks as there are bags more suited to those activities. Enjoy!

Photos: fully packed for the Philippines. Will definitely post an update if I ever use this bag for cold weather travel. I'd be interested to see how well I manage one-bagging it then!

Great for a weekend bag, tough for a multi week trip

I purchased this bag for a month long trip in Asia after reading a ton of reviews about how great it was. I got the eagle creek 3 pack organizers to add to it as well. If I could do it over again, I'd either get a bigger version of the pack, or just use regular luggage all together. Truth of the matter is, most of the Asian airlines let you check a free bag, and it's not worth it to me to lug around 20 pounds in a backpack just to be minimal. The bag got pretty heavy and you'll definitely want to use the hip strap, or your back will hurt. It's not big enough for you to travel abroad and buy new clothes or shoes and add to the bag. I had to get some extra clothes and a pair of loafers, and it was overkill. It made me wish that I had purchased the 55L or even the 70L.

I packed extra clothes because I wasn't sure how often I'd get to do laundry. Some of the hotels we stayed at were super expensive to do laundry. Do you really want to spend your holiday time doing laundry? I wanted to minimize that so we could relax and enjoy the trip. I'm keeping the bag because it's perfect for a weekend trip, or if you have easy access to laundry. A weekend ski trip, or going home for the holidays, it's perfect. On our next trip I plan to bring a checked bag and use this backpack as an addition.

It's great quality, and I'd recommend it. Just be aware of the size and length of your trip etc. Enjoy!

If you are traveling with just one bag, this should be it! I travel a lot! I’ve been to nearly every state in this country and have been abroad on many occasions as well. When I travel I like to take one bag and never want to check luggage. I want easy access to my items, without having to unpack everything at every stop, and I want the ability to carry it hands free (because,after all, this is the 21st Century). After searching for the perfect bag that might meet all my needs I finally settled on this bag and I’m glad I did!

Whether for an overnight trip or an extended excursion this bag has absolutely blown me away. I recently took it on a 2 week trip to Thailand/Cambodia where I found it fit all my essentials, 2 pairs of shorts, 1 pair of pants, 3 shirts, 4 pairs of socks/underwear, bathroom items, inflatable pillow, towel, extra pair of shoes, jacket, rain hat, bug sprays/sunscreen and rain cover (not included, but made for this bag and highly recommended). I’m 6 feet, 4 inches tall and 225 lbs, so not a small guy. The items I carry in this bag reflect that and take up more space than the average person’s. Even with that, the bag could carry all these items and didn’t feel like it was busting at the seams.
There were a few times I wished I would have had an attached day pack, but I had opted for the 40 over the 55 which has that option… even still there are a good number of day packs that roll up very small, so it’s not a loss and something I’ll have remedied the next international trip I take with this pack.

It stores very nicely in overhead bins, didn’t get a second look at boarding, carried very comfortably around the city and backcountry. It was never uncomfortable, despite extended carrying on a few days and shows no signs of use, though it’s been through quite a bit already (But that’s Osprey for you…).

All said, It’s a great bag that I would highly recommend and would purchase again.

OK For Travelling

I really like travelling with one bag, and this seemed a bit larger and more capable than my go-to $15 backpack. After a week bouncing around Ireland and London, here's my feedback:

PROS:
1. Carry handles are very comfortable and low profile
2. Main compartment is useful for packing lots of clothing, it fully opens suitcase/clamshell style
3. The compression straps in the main compartment and the exterior can help save some space for carry on use
4. Packing up the shoulder and hip straps can help with the in/out for airplanes, otherwise you will have a lot of straps getting caught and/or hitting you and others :)
5. I definitely like the bright green interior for helping locate items in low light.
6. Materials and construction seem durable enough to last through most abuse

CONS:
1. Not enough pockets to aid in organization or quick retrieval of items from outside the pack. This means it's great for using when traveling between destinations, but not ideal to be used as a day pack. I used a 'bum pack' to mitigate this to some degree, packing it at the top of the main compartment. I could open the main, then access the pack which organized most of my items i wanted to access or stow quickly, like passport, earbuds, chargers, etc.
2. Bottom of pack is slanted, so it will not stand up straight. This sucks for, again, accessing items quickly. You will need to lean the pack on your body or a wall etc if you want to access it when upright.
3. While the hip strap is great when you are walking long distances, there is no way to store them and use the shoulder straps at the same time.

If you treat it more like a suitcase with backpack straps, then it works fine, but if you want to keep it on you for daily use, I would look elsewhere due to the lack of quick access pockets and organization. I brought a packable backpack along with me and it worked great as a day pack to carry water bottles, phone chargers, batteries etc. Since I find the Osprey too cumbersome for that, I just left in my room until it was time to travel to the next destination. I really wish I could wear this daily, would soften the blow of the price. I will continue to use this when travelling, but am definitely going to keep using my $15 pack as my every day carry bag.

Great bag for traveling...feels like I'm settling

In my frustrating quest to find "the one bag to rule them all" this one comes out somewhat short to the competition from a design point.
I travel alot so I need a bag that is carry on compatible and can withstand most of what nature has to through at it...while still being able to blend-in in the city. I've checked many bags and while I ended up choosing this one, I feel like at the end I'm being cheated a little and settling for something that shouldn't be hard to make...I checked the Mantra AG 36, Escapist 32, Kelty Redwing 44L (owned on before which was stolen), and REI Rucksack 40

I'm 6' about 185lbs, torso Length of 21" for reference and a bit of a minimalist . As a travel bag its all you'll probably need. I owned a Kelty 44 Redwing which was stolen, and while that bag is closer to my needs, it also comes out short in the durability department, and torso length (being only 18.5"). I owned that bag for 1 year and the lining inside had a hole from filing it with packing cubes and a DSLR camera in its bag.

PROS:
Comfortable, wire-frame suspension
Build material and quality 210D ripstop Nylon and 600D Packcloth
Stow away shoulder straps and well padded waist belt
Water resistant
Lockable YKK zippers
Carry-on size compliant
Luggage style compression straps and zipper pocket in main compartment
Very roomy at 40l

CONS:
Water bottle pockets location are a sick joke
No Hydration Pack Storage
The laptop pocket while it will fit a 15" laptop, it's position in front of the bag throws off the weight distribution, and applies pressure which may cause damage to devices.
Organization options could be alot better.
No hipbelt pockets
More pockets needed.
The shape of the bag looks awkward from a profile
This Bag would look alot better if it was upside down with a top slash pocket

In conclusion I'll say this, Kelty should stop making their bags from 420D polyester and start using 420d ripstop nylon or higher on their bags. Make the next Redwing 44 carry on size like it use to be, and add a longer torso length with some hip belt pockets also the inner lining of your bags should be made of 75-100d nylon, its pretty weak right now. And then I'll go back to being your customer in the blink of an eye ....so I don't have a had to settle for the Farpoint 40.

Osprey, stop beating around the bush and make a better all around bag, Your Manta 36 AG is pretty good but due its suspension system the waist belt can be a problem when it comes to meeting the carry-on requirements and you can't stow them away. The Kelty Redwing and REI's Rucksack 40L has you beat in design comparison to the Farpoint 40.
The only thing that's saving you it's the all mighty warranty and more durable building materials.
I feel I wouldn't be totally different if you made the Farpoint 40 have the same futures and design as the Farpoint 55 at least that one has a detachable day pack and some straps at the bottom to hold a sleeping bag.

Somewhere in between these two bags lies a great bag which unfortunately also has short 18,5" torso length and that pack is the REI's Rucksack 40
