Osprey Ozone vs. Meridian? This review compares them!

This is a preliminary review on the product I received right out of the box and mainly to compare it to the Osprey Ozone convertible bag.Osprey Ozone 22"/46 L Wheeled Luggage, Black My husband and I ordered both the Ozone and the Meridian bags. He wanted the 60L Meridian because he felt like his clothes are bigger than mine and I opted for the 50L Ozone bag. The Ozone is made of a nylon material that I felt is very thin. But then again, I could say that it probably adds less weight to the bag itself. The Meridian is made of a thicker "Aluminum Ballistic Nylon". This did not mean anything to me when reading it on a computer screen, but when you actually feel the difference between the two bags, you can tell there is a major difference. The ballistic nylon appears to be not only thicker but a little stiffer as well. This to me screams increased durability. It also appears waterproof although I did not test this out.

The second major difference between the two bags is the handle. They have completely different handles. The Ozone has a one pole handle pull while the Meridian has a two pole handle pull. They both are telescoping and can be used at the smaller length for shorter people such as myself. The downside to the one pole handle pull is that it seems to be right in the middle of the bag from the inside for which you can definitely feel and see from the inside. It seems to stick up a lot inside the bag. It creates an inside space that is somewhat awkward like have a hump in the middle of your packing things. The meridian with its two poles seems to have a flatter area inside the bag and is really not that noticeable.

The other major difference I wanted to discuss is the size of the bags. While the Meridian is 60L, the Ozone is 46L. This 14L difference does not seem like a whole lot but I will post the pictures so you can see. Because of the extra space, the Meridian is a few inches deeper while not necessarily aesthetically appearing so. For whatever reason, the Ozone bag just does not have any depth to it. You can pile clothes in and the bag zips up ok, but the Meridian holds SO much more. They both remain carry on size. The difference in size is a big one for me and is what actually ultimately lead me to head back to UPS with my Ozone bag for a return.

One con for the Meridian bag is that it does not have the hip straps on the 60L. The Ozone has the hip straps which is a nice feature. However, since I'm not planning on doing any major hiking with the Meridian, nor is this bag is really meant for that, I still thought that the highly durable shoulder straps would be just fine for our purposes.

My final summary between the two bags is that the Meridian seems to be a better choice. It is around $50 more in price but I think that the overall quality and structure is better. If your already going to spend $300 on a bag, you might as well spend that extra $50 and get the Meridian.

This could have been so amazing

I wanted to love this bag, and if was cheaper, I would accept the glaring flaws. The reason I bought this was because it was carry-on size with a breakaway backpack. In my mind, this was going to be great because I could keep my valuables and electronics in the small backpack and clothing and other random items in the large backpack.

Pros:
The main bag was a great size with a perfect liquid accessible pocket for TSA.
The backpack strap/handle area can fit your clutch, sunglasses and an iPad with an otterbox case. Again, great for getting through TSA.
It was comfortable to wear as a backpack because of the double handle and the handle felt robust.
Cons:
My main reason for buying this one was the breakaway day backpack. Well, it is tiny. They took up a ton of space for this structured mesh piece, which I think is supposed to prevent back sweat, there is the mesh piece, 2 inches, and then the actual backpack. Which means they left no space for the actual bag part of your day pack. I found the foldable backpacks could hold more. If you don't like a sweaty back and only need to hold a small tablet and some personal items, this is great. Unfortunately, I would have liked to get my camera in there and the 2 inches of air would have created the space for it.
Second, the main bag is not accessible with the backpack attached and the items in the backpack are not accessible with it attached to the main bag! This is useless for getting through TSA and I would have been better off with a separate backpack.

I have been a fan of Osprey products for some time, but this new release of the Meridian is a disappointment. Travelling with multiple kids, having luggage I can carry on my shoulders is great for situations where I need my hands free for other gear.

This is largely a comparison to their prior model Meridian.

Pros:
-Green liner makes the inside brighter
-Side external "wings" seem to protect the contents a bit more
-Mesh air ventilated daypack is comfortable
-Osprey retained a lot of the key features of the Meridian including the convertible, removable backpack straps, separate daypack, 2-post pull handle, and extra padding to protect your bag should you decide to check it in.

However, Osprey decided to cut some costs here which really surprised me.

Cons:
-No hip straps. Honestly, I rarely used it unless lugging the bag on my shoulders for extended distances. But they were great at keeping the wheels from jabbing at my hip. And before, if I really didn't need the straps, I could just detach them.

-No organizational features in daypack, other than the laptop, tablet, and external small pockets. The old daypack had pockets which organized pens, passports, keys, etc (on top of the other pockets.) If the intention is to use this bag on the plane, there is nothing more frustrating then digging through your daypack pocket in a cramped, darkened plane cabin while trying to locate a pen. I really wish Osprey would have kept the pen pockets.

-No piggyback strap. There are often times where I will need to strap a few of the kids' bags to mine while making our way to or from the gate. There is now no convenient way to do this since they eliminated the piggyback strap.

-No wings on the compression straps. This isn't a big deal, but I felt it did a better job of compressing the entire contents of the bag versus just a couple thin straps.

-No zipper attachment for the daypack to the rolling bag. This is one more of those things I rarely used, since the same 3 clips existed, but whenever I checked in my bag, I felt confident that the bags would hold together until I picked it up at my destination. Now, I am hesitant to check in my bag with the daypack attached because it seems like it could easily become detached (and lost forever since the baggage tag is usually attached to the handle on the roller.)

-The same ventilated airframe which makes the bag comfortable to carry is just awful on the plane. It doesn't "scrunch" up under the seat in front of you, so it just sits there taking up the (already) precious legroom.

-And of course, the same ventilated airframe also causes the corners of the daypack to stick out like a sore thumb. If the roller is fully packed, it will bulge in the middle, especially if you are using the compression straps. This means the whole day pack will sit on that bulge and the frame will cause the corners to stick out, making my carryon-legal bag look a full 3-4 inches bigger. This wouldn't be an issue if the daypack worked well on the plane because I could use that as my personal item. Instead, I prefer to use a different bag for the plane, thus requiring me to either check in the Meridian, or sneak on the roller and 2 personal items.

-The frame also makes it so the daypack does its best "play dead" trick whenever you set it down. As soon as you put the pack down, because it has no bottom, it immediately falls to it's back. This isn't so bad in a carpeted airport, but it really sucks if you decide to put your bag down at the edge of a bench or table.

-The overall quality just seems to be bad. I have taken this new Meridian on 3 trips now and the zipper shield is already fraying. Also, I take care of my things, but the corners of the daypack already seem to be wearing. I anticipate the frame will eventually wear through in this area. (See pics.)

I didn't have any of these issues with the old Meridian, but for some reason, Osprey decided to take a great product and bring it down to the level of the competition. Actually, if this product is any indication of the direction Osprey is taking, I will have no choice but to consider the competition when purchasing future equipment. I would have returned this, but being that I already used my bag, I was unable to return it in the "unused" condition Amazon requires. Had I known all of this, I would have purchased the Sojourn 22" (which my Osprey Daylite pack would attach to).

Perfect travel bag--versatility, quality, and warranty

I am a luggage snob. For years I would only use Tumi for travel and Osprey for hiking/camping. My husband convinced me to try this Osprey roller in place of my Tumi, and I am in love. First, you can't go wrong with Osprey. The quality is exceptional and they work hard to make their products as thoughtful and user friendly as possible. This bag is no exception. This is an excellent carry on because the main bag is very large and has two inside zipper pockets--one mesh and one solid--that are the length of the bag. It also has internal compression straps.The inside is also contrasting color. On the blue bag, the contrast is green, which makes for a beautiful detail. The front backpack is easy to clip off and use for a daypack or for a laptop and key things you may need during a flight. In the airport, I'll wheel the bag with the backpack connected, and unhook the backpack part for the actual flight. Very easy to do this, and came in handy during a recent trip where I'd hurt my back and couldn't wear the pack. The main suitcase also becomes a backpack, which is awesome. On a recent trip I had two huge roller suitcases I checked, so turning my carry on roller into a backpack allowed me to move all three pieces of luggage without having to get a cart. Oh, and don't forget the lifetime warranty! You can't go wrong with this bag. The versitility and durability are exceptional.

Nearly perfect carry-on bag

Excellent design and quality construction. I did a lot of research before making a purchase, including a dry run packing a similar bag and this bag was just what I was looking for. I packed 5 pair of pants, five polo shirts, an extra pair of shoes, 7 pair of socks and underwear, shaving kit, and other misc items in the main bag. I detach the day pack once on the plane so I can actually store the stuffed main bag in the overhead bin. Things are very tightly rolled and packed, but the main bag holds clothing for a two week trip. The day pack holds magazines,a camera, an iPad, a Kindle reader, and a CPAP breather for use on the plane. I wish it had adjustable tie down straps to help compress the size of the bag to make it easier to store overhead, but that's my only complaint..

I was really happy when this bag arrived because I searched a very long time for a convertible bag that opened like a suitcase, but converted to a backpack. I thought this one would be great for a three-week trip through Japan because it is very easy to wheel through the aisles of a plane, train or bus and it's big enough to carry all of my essentials.

Convertible bag to backpack concept not that great: The use of the rolling bag was exactly what I wanted; a carry-on rolling bag that converts to a backpack which packs like a suitcase. I really liked being able to fully open the bag and pack all my things just like a suitcase. It worked great in that manner. The side pockets and mess pockets in the large flap worked well to organize my items. The smaller size really forced me to be frugal about clothing and toiletries, I packed less and wore all of my clothes.

The detachable day pack was perfect for storing my laptop, electronics and personal items that I needed to carry with me, but the day pack is that it isn't as big as an average backpack because it has a frame that allows air to flow between the carrier’s back and the pack. It didn't really keep me dry in the hot humid conditions, I was sweating all day long and I would have been happier with the extra room to carry an extra shirt or jacket, the smaller size is better for walking through crowded train stations and riding on buses. For longer trips, I would prefer a larger day back pack. I’m actually converting my favorite backpack to attach to this bag to replace the coordinating day backpack.

Missing Harness: Discovering that the harness was missing was a big disappointment. This harness is specifically why I purchased this expensive bag over other cheaper versions. I almost bought the Amazon equivalent, but opted to spend more for this brand because of the harness capability to convert the bag should I need to. So, when the time arrived to convert my bag, that’s when I discovered that it was missing the harness with torso adjustability which stows in the rear panel pocket. Unfortunately, I discovered this when traveling through the Japan Alpine route and luggage service was not available due to a typhoon and all luggage delivery services were cancelled. So, I had to hand carry it and roll it through a multitude of buses, flights of stairs, trains, cable cars and funiculars to get to my final destination. Once I was back in a city environment, it was easy to roll……. unless, I hit a bump in the road.

Not Stable: This bag has a stability problem. Several times during my adventure, the bag rolled over onto its side when it hit a bump as I was walking through a cross walk and I ended up dragging it on its side for several steps which caused some abrasions to the backpack attached to the back of the bag. It was not easy to correct and I ended up hurting my wrist several times trying to get the bag back onto it's wheels because it was heavy and I was in the middle of a busy street. During one incident, I just had to drag it to the curb to avoid getting hit by oncoming traffic.

I do like this bag concept, but it does have a few problems:
1. The wheels are too small for traversing cobblestones and train tracks
2. The bag is unstable when fully packed and tends to fall over when it hits a bump
3. The bottle holders on the day backpack are worthless when the bag is full because the bottles tend to pop out.
4. The convertible harness was missing from my bag.

I have found this bag to be ideal for short trips that don’t require a lot of clothing or excessive use of public transportation. Perhaps if I could have converted it to a backpack, I may have
avoided some of these troubles. I also could not return this bag after my trip because it was after the return date and there is no way to contact the company directly through the Amazon website.

When you get your bag, make sure the convertible harness is included.

Worst bag in the world, absolute lie about it being 60l

Worst purchase I’ve made this year. This bag is a lie. It’s not 60 l even with the day pack. Maybe 45, I was emptying a 60 l bag into this one and even sitting on the bag couldn’t get it to fit. A good portion of the interior of the bag is taken up by the backpack rigging.

Then, the absolute WORST feature, like really WHO designed this? When you go to attach the daypack to make it “60l” it won’t attach to the bag if you have anything in it. That’s right. The bags only attach when empty or very very lightly full because the clips used to attach the daypack to the pack have no ability to extend. Wtf?

Again it’s more like 40 l WITH the daypack and the daypack can’t attach unless both bags aren’t full. Run from this bag.

Great bag. Perfect for light travel

Overall impressions
I bought the bag for travel. It is a great choice for travel because it hold enough stuff for 3 weeks easily. And also has the detachable day pack which is great for small excursions or just walking around the city for the day. For travel it is great. While it will fit most carry on requirements be warned that it also will not fit a lot of carry on requirements. But the bag still shines when it doesn't fit the requirements. Simply detach the day pack, fill it with the essentials for the flight and you're good to go.

The main bag
The main bag features plenty of space for clothing and extras. The main compartment has two hold down straps inside to compress the items inside. There's a mesh pocket along one side and an enclosed pocket along the other side. The top flap contains two mesh pockets. One small at the top and a large pocket that is most of the size of the flap. The top of the bag (when standing) has a pocket for liquids which changes size based on the amount of stuff on the inside of the big compartment. On the back is a zippered pocket that only unzips a few inches down the side of the bag. Inside are the backpack carry straps. Those come out and clip into the top and bottom of the bag making it into a backpack. The pack sits very well on the back and hips. The straps can be unclipped from inside their pocket which allows that pocket to be used for more storage. That pocket is best suited for something flat such as a magazine.
Pack accordingly in the big bag because when the day pack is attached it's not easily opened without removing the day pack. But you can open it slightly which will allow you access to the small mesh pocket on the top flap. You will always have easy access to the liquids pocket.

Detachable day pack
The day pack hold a surprising amount of stuff without getting bloated. It had a metal frame so it hold its shape and is rigid on the back. On the front there are two elastic water bottle pouches which work very well. Inside there is a padded laptop pouch with a clip to keep everything secure. Attached to that pouch is another pouch with a zipper. Other than that it is a wide open main compartment. The top of the bag has a small pocket similar to the liquids pocket of the big bag.

This convertible bag is great. Osprey items are great. The bag performed well on a 3 week trip to 3 different countries. It holds plenty of items and is light and easy to carry. My only warning is to read the airlines baggage policies because it can become too heavy for some airlines.

Good workmanship, attached daypack not very ergonomic

I own and love Osprey Atmos 65 L hiking backpack, so when Meridian came up on a sale it seemed like a no-brainier.

I like the overall design idea of a spacious carry-on with a detachable smaller backpack.. The workmanship and the materials are top notch, as one would expect from Osprey. I have used it on various types of surfaces so far, and wheels seem made to go the distance. The whole thing is rated at 60 L, which is significantly more than you could pack in a spinner carry on. However, I don't know whether all airlines would let you on board with both the wheeled luggage and the attached backpack filled to the hilt.

My only concern is with the design of the detachable daypack. I like how easy it is too attach and detach it from the wheeled luggage, and it has small access pockets in all the right places. However, the straps on it are positioned quite too narrow. I am a 6 foot man of relatively slim build, but straps were definitely biting into my shoulders, and carrying a 2kg in a detachable bag soon became quite uncomfortable. This came as quite a surprise, as I often carry my 65 L Atmos on my back the whole day, and forget that it's there, to the extent that I have been known to forgot to check it in at the baggage counter and had to be reminded by the stewardess stewardess working at the desk. The small day pack, on the other hand, definitely makes it's presence on my known very quickly, and I can't imagining doing much with it. This undermines the whole design idea, as there is little benefit in having a small backpack that is too uncomfortable to carry around. To be fair, my girlfriend, who is 5'1, and has relatively narrow shoulders, seems fine with it, so if you happen to be of smaller build, this design might still work for you.

Another issue with the design of the detachable smaller backpack is that the bottle pouches in the front would have trouble reliably holding anything but the small half liter bottles. My Nalgene definitely seems like it's about to fall out when I place it there.

I still like the luggage overall, and don't regret the purchase, however, I am not certain whether it is worth the cost. It could have easily been an amazing bag, with a bit more attention paid to the design of the detachable backpack. It is still a solid design overall, with excellent Osprey workmanship, but it does seem like an opportunity lost to some extent. On the other hand, ff you have very narrow shoulders and only carry miniature water bottles around, this might
well be the perfect travel bag for you.

My husband and I both took these bags for a 6 month trip through Nepal, India and Sri Lanka. They bag itself is a fairly good design. We have yet to find bags we are 100% happy with. They are, because of the frame, heavier than a regular back pack. Most of the carriers have a 7 Kilo weight limit, so we ended up having to pay for them on most of our flights. The backpack portion of the large bag is not that comfortable and would not be a realistic bag to pack on your back for more than a mile, at most. The smaller backpack is fairly comfortable. We ended up, where we could, pulling the wheeled bags and wearing the smaller packs. The wheels worked fine, even though they are not multi directional. We were please with their performance on that count. We were surprised to not that the frame has worn through the fabric in the corners on the smaller packs. The larger pack are also exhibiting some surprising wear. That said, the large pack went through hell and back on multiple occasions, planes, ferries, boats, and camels. Not sure if my expectations of performance are realistic.
