Not the usual apocalypse!
March 10, 2016
I tend to avoid apocalyptic fiction because it's usually either zombies, or after a plague has decimated the world, or after some natural disaster, and everyone is trying to survive. The Apocalypse Hive is none of the above.
We start with someone trying to advance his career by causing problems for someone else. His plans go horribly wrong. Is this... cue ominous music... the Beginning of the End? Watching our "hero" escape reminded me of the first Alien movie... racing down hallways and tunnels trying to outpace what's chasing him.
This isn't the aftermath. The meteor hasn't fallen, the plague hasn't wiped everyone out, the zombies aren't in the streets. We're here at the beginning, watching society start to disintegrate. It's different, I liked it a lot, and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.
The writing is fast-paced and high-tension, it grabs you by the throat and drags you along. There's a lot of graphic violence. The characters are complex and interesting, even the ones you don't like. But Witt has a way of making you sympathize with people who are doing the wrong thing. Or are they? This is not a simple, paint-by-numbers story.
If you want to get your adrenaline flowing and raise your blood pressure a few points, give The Apocalypse Hive a read.
