4.0 out of 5 starsLess is more, they say. Well, not always.
Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2009
After lead researcher Donald Clifton left this world and Marcus Buckingham left to found his own firm, Gallup leadership must have wondered how they could milk the Now, Discover Your Strengths cash cow. It seems Strengths Finder 2.0 a "NEW & UPGRADED Edition of the Online Test from Gallup's" was their answer: a beautiful little book in a shiny white cover, with a powerful red font and the "2.0' that was all the rage in `07-'08.

Since "2.0' embodies new, what's new? Well, the author: Tom Rath, Global Practice Leader for Workplace and Leadership, and author of great books we will review in time: How full is your bucket?, Strengths Based Leadership. My question to him is: what did you write in this one?

Anything else? Yes. The book is a lot lighter, and unfortunately, it really is what they say on the cover: a "NEW & UPGRADED Edition of the online test"; not a new book. As far as content, you will find:

* a short section explains what strengths are in Clifton/Gallup speak. Section is verbatim the first edition's.
* a longer section describes one by one the 34 strengths from the Clifton StrengthsFinder. It has a lot less content. The litte additional content is already available on the website. As far as "real change":
..1. Two strengths have changed name: Consistency became Fairness and Inclusiveness became Includer, but the descriptions remain the same, verbatim.
..2. The strengths descriptions are a little different from Now, Discover Your Strengths: the "Introduction" and "examples" remain the same; the "Ideas for action" replicate the recommendations you on the website after passing the test, and the "Working with others who have..." section is a shorter version of Now, Discover Your Strengths "Managing Strengths" section.
* a passcode, the real core of the book, enables you to pass the test on Gallup site. The test is said to be shorter, but I did not notice a significant difference. It is said the insights are better, but I am not convinced I did get anything that was not in the first book.

Enough for the rant. What will you get from this book?

In case you would not know the Clifton Strengths Finder, it is the result of a massive study on the workplace that Gallup conducted over the course of 25 years, interviewing millions of people. One of the results, the 34 strengths are patterns that can be combined, in the spirit of architect Christopher Alexander's work The Timeless Way of Building, to create not building and communities but individuals.

You will learn two key principles from this study:

* "You cannot be anything you want to be.
But you can be a lot more of who you already are."
* Strengths (ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance) = Talent (a natural way of thinking, feeling or behaving) x Investment (time spent practicing, developing your skills, and building your knowledge base)

You will learn about the 34 strengths: Achiever, Activator, Adaptability, Analytical, Arranger, Belief, Command, Communication, Competition, Consistency, Context, Deliberative, Connectedness, Developer, Discipline, Empathy, Focus, Futuristic, Harmony, Ideation, Includer, Individualization, Input, Intellection, Learner, Maximizer, Positivity, Relator, Responsibility, Restorative, Self-Assurance, Significance, Strategic, Woo. This is a long list. You do not need to learn them or know them all.

You will learn about your own strengths, how they manifest, and how you can play on them. This awareness will be a great foundation or accelerator for your personal or professional development effort.

You will also be sensitized to the diversity of strengths. And you will discover ways to help others contribute as only they can and build productive interactions with them. This is important for anyone who works with others (everyone?), but is critical for a leader or manager.

Is this book worth the price?

A thousand times yes, if you need to pass the test! The test itself is undeniably 5 stars. It seems to hit the nail every time, and people I have offered it to and debriefed had a feeling of "yeah, that's who I am", with a little bit of pride: a good basis of awareness and self-acknowledgment. A good gift for people you want to coach or mentor. As for the book, less content really means less outcome and still means less trees. Gallup Boo.

In closing, if you do not have Now, Discover Your Strengths, buy Stengths Finder 2.0, just to get a key at a lower cost, and get hold of a copy of Now, Discover Your Strengths, used or at a library, to read the insights of the final section.

If you have read Now, Discover Your Strengths and would like to pass the test again to see if these have changed or if the results are consistent, by any means, get Strengths Finder 2.0. It is $10 cheaper, and the insights are worth the price.

In both cases, it's just a pity to kill so many trees for so little new content.

3.0 out of 5 starsThis should not be in book form! But good info if you're at a crossroads in life
Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2010
I started by buying this book used from an Amazon seller. Bad move. The code in the back that lets you actually take the test was already used, and the website has NO WAY of buying a fresh code (I even emailed and asked), so I was stuck shipping the thing back and buying a new copy. I didn't realize this was going to be an issue until I was a third of the way through the book and it told me I was finally done reading about how great the test is and was ready to take the test itself.

So a week later, I get my new book, I take the test, get my results, and really enjoyed looking through the results. I then read the entirety of the book to see what other attributes could have been ascribed to me. I had to agree with the test that they pegged my attributes correctly. It was really interesting reading about all the possible strengths and "seeing" some of my friends and relatives in those strengths.

I had a really fun time taking the test and reading about the attributes, but two weeks later - has the knowledge changed my life in any real way? Not really. I am already in a well-thought-out career path, have carefully thought about how I interact with others and use my time, and the insights they provided me with were excellent, but the action steps to put them into practice weren't very helpful to me personally - they were too obvious and were almost all things I had already done or am aware of.

I think if you're not yet very aware of who you are and what your natural tendencies are, then this book could really revolutionize your life, career path, and how you do everything. For me - I'm fairly self-aware, so while it was fun, I didn't get any life-changing benefits from it.

I'm also honestly a bit insulted that they made us buy the book when most of the info is available online or could easily have been. Why not make this a simple online test that we can pay online to take? Save the trees, save the gasoline... The idea that in order for my partner to take the test he needs to buy his own book is just dumb. He could easily share mine and not need to waste more resources.

I think the test would be more useful in my life if I could get a few relatives and friends to enjoy taking it with me - but the idea of getting them each to buy their very own copy of a book to take an online test is just puzzling and odd to me, so I'm moving on.

Some good stuff here, but they need to come into the internet age.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gallup Research Relies on Insiders and is not Widely Validated by Independent Researchers
Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2015

For someone who has never had any professional career counseling, this book may provide some insights. At its low price on Amazon one has little to lose. I have taken many different inventories over the years starting in high school, seminary, grad school, and at my current university as a professor.

I developed a career course at my current university and have worked closely with others in our Career Services unit who are professionally trained in providing and interpreting several different instruments. All of the assessments I have taken or used have limitations. It is not only this approach. Yet, for a person taking a moment to think about new directions in life based upon their strengths, reflection based upon results from this tool is certainly worthwhile.

There are several questionable issues with this book from an empirical standpoint.

First, this is a really large money maker for Gallup. They carefully control the empirical study of this instrument versus other instruments in psychology. Their validation report references a few studies not widely available to researchers and the public in respected journals. Unlike other instruments examining the Big Five personality factors, a survey of all refereed articles in the major psychological journals will reveal few actual empirical studies by researchers outside of their corporation. So, this instrument has not withstood rigorous peer review.

Second, allowing items to be used on more than one theme violates assumptions of statistical independence.

Third, many low scale reliabilities are reported that would be questioned if subjected to peer review. Part of this may be due to their use of ipsative scales forcing a person between two choices. Other scales have used this type of scaling, but most do not.

Fourth, they argue for validity on poorly reported cluster analysis. They do not go into detail about confirmatory factor analyses conducted. Of course, the use of items on more than one theme violated the assumption of statistical independence necessary for a legitimate factor analysis to be conducted.

Fifth, most research reporting new instruments clearly discusses relationships to other well-known psychological instruments.

Sixth, if they did allow an item to only contribute to one theme, there is no way that there would be over two-dozen unique factors. Several of their themes would likely group into more general factors or clusters.

Quite simply, the standards of research behind this book are not the same as their better-recognized practices in their opinion polls. Recent large-scale work with Purdue University on career satisfaction and engagement is of a much higher caliber. Better understanding of the relationships among these themes would likely open a deeper and more lively discussion.

3.0 out of 5 stars You are paying for the one time use code to take the online assessment - The book by itself won't help you find anything
Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2017

The book doesn't have anything to help you find your top 5 strengths without you taking an online assessment.
You need a unique code in the book in order to take the online test. So a used copy won't help you here.
If you are going to buy a book, I would recommend buying the paper copy. Once you take the test online, you can download an
electronic copy of the book that you can load into kindle or epub reader.
As of this writing the hardcover copy is cheaper than the kindle version.

The report you get after the online assessment is which 5 strengths are your top ones ranked. The text in the all the reports is verbatim
to what is in the book except for a section of new text which in my opinion does not add much. The web site make it sound like
you will get so much more in the reports, but you don't.

If you can figure out what your 5 strengths are, then just borrow a copy from the library and read the description and action
for the strengths that apply to you and save your money as the reports are not worth having once you know what your strengths are.
That being said, the 34 strengths are overlapping so it may be difficult to pick out the best 5 and rank them without the assessment.

The 5 strengths from my assessment are spot on, but ranked in an order I would not have anticipated. I would not bother paying
extra money to get the entire 34 strengths in ranked order. You probably can figure out which ones are absolutely not you based
on the description in the book, and the rest you can ignore as the whole premise is to work on your strengths and not your weaknesses.

My opinion is that books are to be shared so that knowledge can be shared. Unfortunately, this book is not one of them.
Each individual has to pay to gain knowledge. Gallop certainly has the rights to do it, but unfortunately not every member of society
can afford to pay to be assessed. Hence 3 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not all it was cracked up to be.

I liked this book, don't get me wrong... but it's not much of a book. It's more of an online test.

A couple of years ago, my friends kept hounding me to get this book. "OH, you're going to love it! You've got to get it! It's so amazing!" Perhaps I just suffered from over-hype.

I once heard of a corporate consultant who told businesses to buy it, throw away the book and just use the code to take the online test. I thought that was a pretty brash statement. But now I know why.

The "book" consists of a good intro/prologue that primes you for taking the test. It's well-written and makes some great points about how we respond to failure and focus on our strengths and weaknesses. About the moment I was cheering and felt we were gaining momentum, It abruptly stops and instructs you to go online and take the test before going any further. Taking the test was fine and took approximately 20 minutes. Afterward, you can read all about your top 5 strengths and even download PDF reports, which I liked.

When I went back to the book, I realized that it's only the printed version of what your strengths are once you've taken the test. Only, it's the entire library of traits, and since I had already read mine, the rest of the book was suddenly less interesting.

Aside from this deflated feeling about the book itself, I felt like the descriptions of my top 5 were insanely accurate in describing me. They articulated things about my personality that I had never been able to do before. So while the "book" part was kind of a letdown, I do feel the insight gained was well worth the price of admission.

Would I recommend this book? Yes! Absolutely. But I'd be sure to warn them it's mostly an online test and less of a book. :)

I purchased this book a few years ago as a personal interest and took the assessment. I thought the results were pretty interesting. Once you get the report and read about your strengths the rest of the book is of no interest.

I am now in a class where I have been asked to take the assessment again. I mentioned I had already taken the assessment a few years ago. The instructor said as we grow we change and if it had been more than 2 years ago he wanted me to take it again. It was 4 years ago. I thought no problem, I can do that. I kept the code. Plus I know my Myers-Briggs profile changes significantly after I became a parent. I was interested in seeing how my strengths may have changed. I tried to take the assessment again and guess what, you can only take the test once. I am upset. I have to decide to purchase the book again or forgo the opportunity to compare results. What exactly would I do with two versions of the same book on my shelf. Haven't decided what I'll do. This, plus the book doesn't add much value outside of reading about your strengths is why I only give it 3 stars.

These books with codes are a rip-off to the consumer. You basically spend the cost of the book to take the test and get the report. I would rather spend $10 each time to take the test and get the report.

I ordered this book for a class. I ordered it via the kindle version because I procrastinated and needed to take the test to find my strengths. The code was delivered to my email and worked well for the purpose of the test required for the class. Although a little clunky compared to many other Amazon technology wows, 5 stars for that portion.

3 of of 5 for the book content. I was excited to learn something from the strength evaluation and felt like it was a waste. Maybe I’m just burned out of these type self analysis but really didn’t take away anything from the evaluation other than I got an A on the assignment.
If you asked me now 6 weeks later what I learned, I would tell you that I answered several random questions and then got a generic response that you nodded your head like yeah, that’s what I thought.

It reminds me of zodiac.

I think there are much better self improvement books out there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but only if you haven't taken StrengthsFinder previously
Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2008

StrengthsFinder as a whole is wonderful. It's an excellent way to conduct a self-assessment for those of us who have difficulty thinking introspectively without some structure. Most of us have a vague sense of what our strengths are and tend to focus on our weaknesses. This concept provides an alternate prospective. The descriptions are fairly vague; you benefit most when a group of you take the assessment and then have a discussion.

That said...if you've taken the first version of the test, this one will likely be of no use to you. My strengths remained relatively stable (and the two that changed make complete sense). The assessment doesn't appear to be upgraded on the user side (perhaps it is behind the scenes...). The customized report is basically the descriptions of the themes pulled from the book and placed in a PDF file. The new information and research was a handful of statistics that, while interesting, can be found in the Q&A with the author above. The website seemed to be a tool to promote Gallup's other (and more expensive) books, products, and services. In fact, that's what this whole book seemed to be.

So the take home message here is buy this if you haven't taken the test previously and borrow a copy of "Now Discover Your Strengths" (better written and more insightful) from your local library. If you have taken it, pass and review your old book to identify any changes in your top strengths.

This book is okay I guess. I had to purchase this book for a graduate nursing class and I would not have bought it, or taken the accompanying survey otherwise. The purpose of this book is to explain the results of a survey that you need to take online. Through the survey, you are shown five themes or talents that you posses. This book helps explain what those themes mean. The survey was interesting I suppose, though certainly not earth shattering, and this book does give you a good run down of the themes mean. That said, I sort of felt like the exercise was a waste of time. Admittedly, I am very cynical of the genre of books that promise to tell you who are, what you do best and in this case, the survey and this book are kind of a jumping off point to introduce you to a host of other products you can buy to learn even more about yourself and how to leverage your strengths. For those who live in and cherish that business/management world, this book and the survey probably have some merit. On the other hand, if you are generally happy with your life and have some ability to self assess, this survey and book likely aren't going to tell much that you don't already know. On the plus side, the survey and the book do seem based on years and years of legitimate research, and I don't discount that.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Book You Should Buy Instead of This is Now Discover Your Strengths

There are 4 books in these strength based book series:

1. First Break All The Rules
2. Now Discover Your Strengths
3. Strengths Finder 2.0
4. Go Put Your Strengths To Work

All of Marcus Buckinghams books are incredible and will definitely help you in finding your strengths and are all worth buying.

However this is about Strengths Finder 2.0.

The only reason to purchase this book is to take the new strengths finder test and get a couple new things the first book didn't have.
In the back of each Strengths Finder 2.0 book there's a packet that contains a unique access code.

The first 30 pages are great content and you should read them but the whole rest of this book are details about each of the individual 34 themes.
This information is all contained in Now Discover Your Strengths also. The only difference is that the 2.0 book they give you 10 ideas for action and
3 ideas on working with others. Both helpful.

I bought both books. I initially took the Strengths Finder 2.0 Test and will take the Strengths Finder 1.0 later (the first test in Now Discover Your Strengths)
to see how different it really is in a couple of months and see if I have any different themes compared to the first test.

If your not an entrepreneur or not in a management position you don't need to buy First Break All The Rules. Just stick with the 3 other strength books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointing
Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2008

I purchased Strengthsfinder 2.0 upon the recommendation of Cristina Favreau. Although I usually enjoy doing assessments and learning more about myself, I was not overly impressed with this one.

For starters, it's hard to comprehend the value in a question that asks "Would you rather read a book or eat an apple?" (This is not a real question, but an illustration of the type of unrelated things you're asked to choose between in some cases.)

In addition, I think it should be possible to purchase additional access codes without having to buy more copies of the book. It's not just about the cost of the book (not to mention shipping), but in this age of environmental consciousness, no one should have to buy a book in order to access an online service, especially if they already own a copy.

Although the results were interesting, I was somewhat disappointed in the lack of direction as to how to make use of them. Fortunately, when I posted a comment to that effect on Cristina's blog, Lara, The Data Digger was kind enough to point me to "Sort Your Life into Place! The Strengths Card Sort," a blog post by Margaret Greenberg, which helped me take it a step further.
