5.0 out of 5 stars4k30 and 1080p120...
Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2016
Pros:
*Great 4k and 1080p/120 option.
*Excellent touchscreen performance (smooth, no lag, responsive)
*exceptional audio for an action cam
*Built in tripod adapter
*excellent app (not quite as easy as go pro, some icons aren’t what you expect them to be)
*Can run directly off USB power bank with or without the internal battery installed.
*Available in white to help with heat if recording outside on hot summer days.

Cons:
*128gb card support seems sketchy, their site lists 6 cards they recommend and they are all 64gb cards. I have 2 of the cards they recommend (actually 4 of each), both types work perfectly, but I also have the 128gb versions of those same cards and they do not work. I have formatted in camera and on pc with different block sizes but they all pretty much start recording, then crash when the file size limit is reached producing a corrupt file on the card. I believe a firmware update can and will fix this but as of version 1.12 (1.07 default) it is still a no go.
**this is not really a “con” of the camera but when running direct off USB power source with no internal battery installed I seem to be limited to 3ft cable length in certain situations. With a 6ft cable the cam will shut down shortly after recording starts. I have successfully recorded 15 straight hours (minus card swaps every2h18m) with a USB power bank and 3ft cable. I tested this at home and found that one of my AC powered USB hubs was able to power this device successfully on a 6ft USB cable but none of my battery powered USB banks could do this. I suspect the cam is running very close to the 2.4a limit so I will try a male-male-female “Y” cable to boost power to see if this resolves the “issue”

IMO:
I have a very specific use case where I need to record up to 18 hours of fishing from a full size bass boat. I have a gopro hero3 white, a hero session and now this Yi2. I do not have any of the hero4 editions, I had the black but it would overheat every so often and shut down so it was returned. This part of the review will be comparing this against those other models.
Up to now, the best “overall” solution I had found was a Hero3 white with battery eliminator and waterproof housing mod. This setup allows me to record no matter what the weather conditions but it can be cumbersome changing cards, always required an external power source (batteries were always dead because I never use or charge them), always had to set the date/time (battery eliminated), had muffled/unsuable audio (waterproof housing) and it was 1080p30 max.
The Hero Session with its integrated battery, waterproofing and excellent dual microphones was a good upgrade and compromise. The “upgrade” being excellent audio, great video… as long as the sun was behind us and protune was enabled, and 1080p60 max. The “compromise” being it was not “waterproof’ while charging and the if the sun was facing the cam the subject would be too dark. However, If the weather turned I just unhooked the charger, closed the door and it was weatherproof for as long as the battery could hold. I also didn’t have to remember to set the date/time since it always had power from the internal battery.
The Yi 4k cam has all the resolutions and modes you could want. The touchscreen works incredibly well, is fluid, is responsive and is excellent for framing shots or checking status without always needing the app. The app works well and connects much faster than the gopro app but the controls in the gopro app are clearer and easier to use. In the Yi app there are some icons for switching video/photo and they appear to do the opposite of what I expect, however, I only really use the app to check the framing after a high-speed run (easier than getting behind the cam when it is mounted)
The things that set this apart for me are more mechanical, I can run this cam directly off a usb power bank with no battery installed in the camera (hero3 white can do this, hero session does not) which greatly reduces heat out on a hot summer day. (the hero3 and session will get so hot you can't hold them... but they still ran and the session is waterproof so I can cool it off in the lake) It is available in white which makes a huge difference in the amount of heat this thing absorbs. It shoots 4k and 1080p/120 along with a host of other modes including in-camera time lapse video.
Of course, all of this is accomplished outside of the waterproof housing. This still leaves me needing the hero3 white setup for rainy days but I was in the same situation with the session
I think MarkHawkCam has a complete review of the technical aspects on youtube ([...]) and covers everything in depth. Here is a sample running video I captured and uploaded right off the card to youtube with no enhancement: [...]
Overall, for me, this cam fits in my arsenal at a very fair price. It doesn’t replace any of the other cams I am already using but it my new primary camera.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood action cam but community is limited
Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2016
The Yi 4k cam has the potential to be GoPros competition. It has all the specs of the GoPro Hero5 but at half the price. Does 4k30fps, 2.7K60fps and so on. It's very similar to the GoPro Hero 5 and has a better sensor then the GoPro Hero 4 black. You will need a fast memory card for 4k video recording. I used 1440 to record to keep file size down and I'm still about to convert it to 1080 so low light videos looks really good.

Quality was really good and low light quality was really good especially with manual EV adustment and ISO adjustment. It allowed me to get photos from near low light conditions. Dark room with just the TV in and I was able to pick up details in the camera. It is a little bit noises but if you wanted some footage of low light then this camera is good for that. But the ability to shoot in higher resolution then to shrink it down from 4k or 2.7k to a 1080 resolution, video quality looks really nice.

So all this good talk about the Camera so why the 3 stars.
-when recording in 1440 resolution, video would last a minute or two then cut out and the camera was very warm. Too warm for me and I know recording in high resolution will produce heat but this seems very high. I have use my iPhone to record a 40 mins 4k video and that got warm but the camera was way warmer then that which isn't normal.
-even with a fast the SanDisk Extreme, 4k video cut out every minute so I have no idea what it did that. Completely reset device and still did it.
-community of users seems small so I have a feeling Yi isn't working too hard on their app. Right now there's only Facebook sharing or Facebook live for iOS app. No way to even save the videos onto my device to share with other social media platform in HD. You need to use the app to pull the video and then you need to hit share it but not completely go through with sharing it and it will save a low resolution video onto your device.
-would love to see more social media sharing options for HD or even 1440 resolution besides Facebook.

I do hope to see improvements but as of right now, the app is what I think is draining the ratings for me.

I will return this device and pick up another one and see how it is and report back.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice camera but no loop recording as stated....
Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2019
Style: Camera OnlyColor: Night BlackVerified Purchase
The YI 4K is a very nice action camera. Video is excellent in night and day and the battery lasts a reasonably long time. The only problem I have is that even though it says it has video loop, it DOES NOT. When in loop mode the camera will stop recording with the message "not enough space on SD card". I have contacted YI tech support several times and all I get back is a run around about the recommended memory cards and make sure they are formatted. I even sent the the picture shown with the message. If your looking for a regular action camera this would be good. However, if you looking for looping DO NOT but this camera.... I would have given 4 stars but since tech support wont fix this issue I have to go with three.

I also noticed that while loop recording a folder is created for each day the camera is recording. When a new folder is created a new recording session and folder is started eventually filling the memory card unit full prompting you to free up memory space or simply format the card. Loop recording is continuous recording overwriting the oldest file. If a new folder is created then the oldest file cannot be over written. So with the camera operating this way is basically working in video mode. On the YI site it states "The YI Action Camera has a 1/4 screw and can be used as a dash camera using the loop video mode. Turn on loop video mode to cyclically record video. Press pause to record the segment of video." If I have to keep erasing my video card to continue loop recording, then it is NOT loop or cyclically recording video but simply working in standard video mode. YI says the card has to be formatted FAT 32 but when formatted FAT32 the camera prompts you that the card needs to be formatted before using.

1.0 out of 5 stars Real BAD Video Quality, slow customer service, no help

The media could not be loaded.
I keep having problems with the video quality. I bought this camera for a trip to Europe and at the time was really excited to try it out. Right after receiving this product, there were some issues with video quality. I contacted YI 4K and they told me to update some settings but it took them forever to respond to my email. By then I had already left for my trip to Europe with the camera and the problems were still occurring. I had bought the warranty as well but when I contacted the warranty company, they told me to contact the manufacturer. When I contacted the manufacturer (YI 4K) they told me to contact Amazon, when I contacted Amazon they told me to contact the manufacturer. It seems that no one was taken responsibility for this shit camera, everyone was just sending me around in a circle. Finally, I ended up canceling the warranty because they will no longer honor it due to manufacturer's fault. I just want to A) Get a refund or B) Get the camera fixed or at least get a replacement camera that works. I have seen some videos of YI 4K and I think it's decent, I think I got one from a bad batch but it has been very difficult to get in contact with anyone. I don't recommend buying this camera because you don't know if you will get one that is of high quality or a defected one like mine. Also, it will be hard to return or get a refund especially if you are traveling. You will spend a lot of time sending emails to YI 4K so you should do more research and consider a Go Pro. I wasted a lot of money on this product and I am not happy with it same with the customer service. I have contacted YI 4K again for the 2nd or 3rd time about this camera, let's see what they will do...

Dead out of box wouldnt even boot up. This is crap.. Do not recommend product...

Here is an update"
So I received an email from YI customer service saying this :

We understand your disappointment and apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you. We strive to create durable, quality products, and I would like to assure you that the particular product you purchased was an unfortunate anomaly.
We know that you have returned the product back. For the inconvenience, we like to offer you a free selfie stick with remote control if you purchase another 4K camera from us.

So i went a head and took another chance (this one works) and ordered another one, also email them the order #
but of course they didn't send me the free selfie stick with remote control.. Not so Great Customer Service... Not a big fan of this company..

I still gave it one star still due to customer service.... I would give the YI 4K action Camera 4 stars... Better Than GOPro and 1/2 the price

As for the action Camera, it booted up this time and put it on my 48 sportster and to my surprise it worked pretty well. For the Video I used 1080p/60fps so I could use the Electronic Image Stabilization on my Bike. I could not use 4K or 1080p/120fps that i wanted to use the better frame rate with the Electronic Image Stabilization together. But the video was still 1080p so its not all that bad.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst action camera I have tried

I bought this after reading multiple reviews and watching a lot of Youtube videos. I figured it would be a decent camera....boy was I wrong.

This has the noisiest and grainiest footage. I made sure there was plenty of lighting (indoors and outdoors) and even bought one of the recommended memory cards. I tried different settings, willing to sacrifice video quality and nothing helped. I tried 3 different memory cards too. Terrible footage. The camera got extremely hot and was not easy to handle because of it. I just wanted to put it down because of how hot it got.

I figured I would update the firmware thinking that might help... well... Yi's page/website link is broken. Here is the error you get when you try to download the latest or even a little older of a firmware update.

Bucket Not Found: Make sure you have created bucket in current region, request-id=17a74e40-602d-80dc-0000-016d60f7675b

There is nothing more frustrating than taking something out of the box and it just does not work or hold up to expectations. I did not have high expectations for this and even then, it fell very very short! All this hassle to save a few bucks is not worth it at all. I bought one of their dashcams and that works better than this supposed 4K action cam. Not happy with this at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a piece of garbage: who's writing all the good reviews!?
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2019

Bought this after reading many great reviews that claimed it's almost as good as a GoPro Hero 8. Absolute nonsense. Everything about this camera sucks. The biggest issue is the video quality, which is simply terrible: very jerky and staccato whenever the camera is panned. The image stabilization is equally bad. My Google Pixel 2 video quality is a million times better. Updated the firmware to latest version when I couldn't get it to connect to the phone app and now the wifi won't even stay turned on. It just times out after about 5 seconds and switches itself off. Followed all the steps online and in the manual and it simply won't connect (even when no other wifi networks are in range). The camera battery is also very poor...I'll get hours longer on my Google Pixel phone so I might as well use that. At best, I might get 1 hour of recording out of this thing. They say, buy cheap, buy twice: well after this experience I'll definitely be going for a GoPro next time. I would return this but by the time I've paid for the overseas shipping charges, it probably wouldn't be worth it. Real shame, I had such high hopes for this camera. Oh, and yes, I installed the best 64GB microSD card that money could buy (from the manufacturer's recommended list).

1.0 out of 5 stars Bricked before it even made it to "action cam" use.
Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2017

After having the camera for 32 days it stopped operating properly. I'd purchased it to take on a trip to New Zealand and it broke before we even got started doing any of our adrenaline junkie activities. That is to say, it was lightly used for things like time lapse video, still photos, and long exposure shots. The camera started acting funny a few days before becoming completely unresponsive. Annoying little things like having to take the battery out to turn it off because it wasn't responding to the power button. Eventually, it would turn on but the touch screen was totally unresponsive, and the app could no longer connect and control it from my phone, not to mention the power button no longer working except to turn it on (but nothing else). I tried running it off a different battery, but that made no difference, and also didn't matter what memory card was in it. Basically it turned into am expensive battery sucking paper weight. I ended up having to replace it with a GoPro from the store because you can't find Yi products or support hardly anywhere outside China from what I've seen.

1.0 out of 5 stars I wanted it to work O.o
Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2016
Style: Camera OnlyColor: Night BlackVerified Purchase
I know this camera gets rave reviews but it just did not work for me.

I was using a, more than qualified, micro SD card (Sandisk) and the camera would only record about 10-15 seconds before it stopped recording and gave some kind of write error. The card was on the suggested list, except it was 128gb.

I had to update the firmware before it would even recognize the SD card. I had to insert, and eject, the card about 10 times before it would even recognize it. The card was a Sandisk U3 XC1 V30 128fb card.

I ran speed tests on the card and it was pushing 85-90mb/s. Plenty fast but the Yi 4K didn't like it.

So, now I will send it back and try the GoPro Hero 5 Black.

I really wanted the Yi to work because it's an excellent deal and reviews are quite wonderful.

It just didn't work for me. I don't want to spend hours troubleshooting and finding some exact card to work in my electronics. It should work properly out of the box. Mine did not.

To each their own.

I was about to update this camera to 4 stars till today...

First time I've taken it out and used it to the point I needed to switch batteries. Omg what a mistake. It stopped detecting the SD card everytime I would shut it off and turn it back on. I would have to remove the camera from the stick and case to open battery cover, remove SD card, power camera up and install the card.

Missed a lot because of this. And being I now have a hero 5 I have realized this camera isn't a "value" at all. By the time you buy SD card, water proof case and then fight for hours to make it detect the SD card, the $399 for the hero 5 ends up the better deal.

I really loved the video and still image quality with this camera, but i can rely on it to work, especially if using the app.

So sending this back if I can find the box.

Purchased two of these for a concert video recording. Both cameras had the same problems as follows: Ongoing and unpredictable random shutdown. Poor 4K video recordings! VERY POOR! It did not matter what lighting conditions, indoor or outdoor, the video is pure crap! I used the best Sandisk Extreme Pro, 64GB cards as recommended. Cameras would get hot then shut down. Videos that exceed the (previously undisclosed) 2 GB of data cause camera to stop then restart. Sometimes it only recorded sound and NO video. I only recorded in 4K mode so perhaps other lesser modes might be better. The only good thing about this camera is the audio was much better than anticipated. Advice: If you intend to video anything of importance, don't depend on this camera! Very disappointed to say the least. One camera will be returned but the other has exceeded the 30 day return policy of Amazon. O cannot recommend this camera for anything.

1.0 out of 5 stars Two cameras, both had audio issues within 11 months. Huge waste of money

I cannot recommend the Yi 4K Sports and Action camera. I bought this for a relative in October 2017 and it worked great until September 2018, when it started recording audio on only one channel. This channel was just static. We contacted Yi directly and they kindly sent a second camera. It is now September 2019 and the same audio issue has occurred on this second camera! So this happened to two cameras both within 11 months. We have Yi security cameras and have never had an issue with them so this is a major disappointment. We have now bought my relative a GoPro and hopefully it will actually last longer than 11 months. I would absolutely not waste your money on this.
