5.0 out of 5 stars4k30 and 1080p120...
Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2016
Pros:
*Great 4k and 1080p/120 option.
*Excellent touchscreen performance (smooth, no lag, responsive)
*exceptional audio for an action cam
*Built in tripod adapter
*excellent app (not quite as easy as go pro, some icons aren’t what you expect them to be)
*Can run directly off USB power bank with or without the internal battery installed.
*Available in white to help with heat if recording outside on hot summer days.

Cons:
*128gb card support seems sketchy, their site lists 6 cards they recommend and they are all 64gb cards. I have 2 of the cards they recommend (actually 4 of each), both types work perfectly, but I also have the 128gb versions of those same cards and they do not work. I have formatted in camera and on pc with different block sizes but they all pretty much start recording, then crash when the file size limit is reached producing a corrupt file on the card. I believe a firmware update can and will fix this but as of version 1.12 (1.07 default) it is still a no go.
**this is not really a “con” of the camera but when running direct off USB power source with no internal battery installed I seem to be limited to 3ft cable length in certain situations. With a 6ft cable the cam will shut down shortly after recording starts. I have successfully recorded 15 straight hours (minus card swaps every2h18m) with a USB power bank and 3ft cable. I tested this at home and found that one of my AC powered USB hubs was able to power this device successfully on a 6ft USB cable but none of my battery powered USB banks could do this. I suspect the cam is running very close to the 2.4a limit so I will try a male-male-female “Y” cable to boost power to see if this resolves the “issue”

IMO:
I have a very specific use case where I need to record up to 18 hours of fishing from a full size bass boat. I have a gopro hero3 white, a hero session and now this Yi2. I do not have any of the hero4 editions, I had the black but it would overheat every so often and shut down so it was returned. This part of the review will be comparing this against those other models.
Up to now, the best “overall” solution I had found was a Hero3 white with battery eliminator and waterproof housing mod. This setup allows me to record no matter what the weather conditions but it can be cumbersome changing cards, always required an external power source (batteries were always dead because I never use or charge them), always had to set the date/time (battery eliminated), had muffled/unsuable audio (waterproof housing) and it was 1080p30 max.
The Hero Session with its integrated battery, waterproofing and excellent dual microphones was a good upgrade and compromise. The “upgrade” being excellent audio, great video… as long as the sun was behind us and protune was enabled, and 1080p60 max. The “compromise” being it was not “waterproof’ while charging and the if the sun was facing the cam the subject would be too dark. However, If the weather turned I just unhooked the charger, closed the door and it was weatherproof for as long as the battery could hold. I also didn’t have to remember to set the date/time since it always had power from the internal battery.
The Yi 4k cam has all the resolutions and modes you could want. The touchscreen works incredibly well, is fluid, is responsive and is excellent for framing shots or checking status without always needing the app. The app works well and connects much faster than the gopro app but the controls in the gopro app are clearer and easier to use. In the Yi app there are some icons for switching video/photo and they appear to do the opposite of what I expect, however, I only really use the app to check the framing after a high-speed run (easier than getting behind the cam when it is mounted)
The things that set this apart for me are more mechanical, I can run this cam directly off a usb power bank with no battery installed in the camera (hero3 white can do this, hero session does not) which greatly reduces heat out on a hot summer day. (the hero3 and session will get so hot you can't hold them... but they still ran and the session is waterproof so I can cool it off in the lake) It is available in white which makes a huge difference in the amount of heat this thing absorbs. It shoots 4k and 1080p/120 along with a host of other modes including in-camera time lapse video.
Of course, all of this is accomplished outside of the waterproof housing. This still leaves me needing the hero3 white setup for rainy days but I was in the same situation with the session
I think MarkHawkCam has a complete review of the technical aspects on youtube ([...]) and covers everything in depth. Here is a sample running video I captured and uploaded right off the card to youtube with no enhancement: [...]
Overall, for me, this cam fits in my arsenal at a very fair price. It doesn’t replace any of the other cams I am already using but it my new primary camera.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood action cam but community is limited
Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2016
The Yi 4k cam has the potential to be GoPros competition. It has all the specs of the GoPro Hero5 but at half the price. Does 4k30fps, 2.7K60fps and so on. It's very similar to the GoPro Hero 5 and has a better sensor then the GoPro Hero 4 black. You will need a fast memory card for 4k video recording. I used 1440 to record to keep file size down and I'm still about to convert it to 1080 so low light videos looks really good.

Quality was really good and low light quality was really good especially with manual EV adustment and ISO adjustment. It allowed me to get photos from near low light conditions. Dark room with just the TV in and I was able to pick up details in the camera. It is a little bit noises but if you wanted some footage of low light then this camera is good for that. But the ability to shoot in higher resolution then to shrink it down from 4k or 2.7k to a 1080 resolution, video quality looks really nice.

So all this good talk about the Camera so why the 3 stars.
-when recording in 1440 resolution, video would last a minute or two then cut out and the camera was very warm. Too warm for me and I know recording in high resolution will produce heat but this seems very high. I have use my iPhone to record a 40 mins 4k video and that got warm but the camera was way warmer then that which isn't normal.
-even with a fast the SanDisk Extreme, 4k video cut out every minute so I have no idea what it did that. Completely reset device and still did it.
-community of users seems small so I have a feeling Yi isn't working too hard on their app. Right now there's only Facebook sharing or Facebook live for iOS app. No way to even save the videos onto my device to share with other social media platform in HD. You need to use the app to pull the video and then you need to hit share it but not completely go through with sharing it and it will save a low resolution video onto your device.
-would love to see more social media sharing options for HD or even 1440 resolution besides Facebook.

I do hope to see improvements but as of right now, the app is what I think is draining the ratings for me.

I will return this device and pick up another one and see how it is and report back.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unreliable recording, and camera is useless if the screen is chipped
Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2018
Style: Camera OnlyColor: Night BlackVerified Purchase
The video this camera records is very good, considering its price point, and battery life is acceptable (not great). This is why it gets two stars. As for the rest, things fall apart quickly.

- The "loop" recording function creates new files after five minutes of recording (good), but does not overwrite the oldest file when the disk is full (awful). This means you constantly have to micromanage your disk space, curating interesting videos and deleting unnecessary ones after just an hour or two of recording. This means it's awful as a bicycle or dash camera. If that's your use case, forget about it.

- Speaking of SD cards. The compatible SD card list is comically tiny. Even if you get one on the list, the camera recording reliability is abysmal. You'll randomly have the video stop recording, and you'll often see a message on the display saying "Slow Card". I tried to use this to record incidents when I'm cycling, and I've been unable to provide evidence of several near-misses because the camera randomly stopped recording despite using an approved card.

- The WiFi connectivity with the Android app has never worked for me. In theory, you turn on WiFi on the camera, open the Yi app on your phone, and connect to control the phone. In practice, none of that works, on the latest Android version on a Nexus device.

The above wouldn't be a problem, but...

- The camera cannot be configured at all if your screen cracks even slightly. A tiny chip in the screen has rendered the touchscreen completely inoperable. I was hoping to use WiFi and the app to configure it, but of course, those don't work.

- How did I crack my screen, you might ask? I kept the camera in the same bag as my car key. The screen is so fragile it beggars belief it's intended for an "action" camera.

- Because of the above, good luck changing the time after a time change. Or if your camera suddenly decides to revert to default settings, which it did for me. (By the way, my camera now thinks it's 2014. Good luck using my date/time stamps as evidence in the event of a crash.)

- Some of the camera options can be configured by editing settings in a "system.data.upload" file that is placed directly on the SD card root. Great! ...Except Yi doesn't document these options anywhere, most of them have cryptic names, and apparently this can't be used to change the date/time (see above). But don't you fret, I can always change "VAPref.AdasCalibHood" (whatever that is) from its default value of "0x55"!

All in all, I can't believe I spent so much on such an unreliable product that becomes useless if the screen is chipped in any way. Live and learn, I guess. I won't purchase another Yi product though.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's just OK, low light performance terrible
Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2017

Item received DOA. Power light turns on, but no sounds are made. The power will not turn off unless the battery is pulled from the camera. Screen does not light up either. Contacted Amazon, they said they could only give a refund, not a replacement part since it was sold by Yi. Contacting Yi to get a replacement, then I'll update the review.

Update: Yi sent a replacement that I've been using for about a week and so far so good. The u.i. is very well done and ready to navigate. The touchscreen is responsive and wifi works like a charm if you are within 10 feet. I've had several code updates for the camera in the short time I've had it, all adding nice features to the camera. I had this camera filming my son's baseball in 109 degree weather for several hours and did not overheat!! The only downside is the low light performance is absolutely horrendous, so grainy it's unbearable, and this is in a well lit Gymnasium filming at 1080p 60fps, the sony hdr-as200v is leaps and bounds better in low light performance at 1080p. The "yi color" profile is pretty bad as well, it's not very vibrant and everything looks flat, again the sony vivid settings on the hdr cameras are way better. You get what you pay for I guess. Would not recommend or buy again, unless they fix the low light issues. 8/29/2017

Update 2: More firmware updates, a lot of cool features still being actively added, unfortunately the low light issues still persist. Indoor shooting should not be done with this camera, unless you do 30fps and don't mind some grain. Also, recently used at a volleyball tournament, and the sound gets washed out very quickly when the crowd cheers. A firmware update to help attenuate the sound when it spikes to super high levels would be much appreciated.

2.0 out of 5 stars To be fair the camera quality was pretty good for the most part
Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2017

I purchased my Yi 4k in March. I used it to record my YouTube videos. At some point the microphone stopped recording sound and I have a few videos that have no sound what so ever. I have run tests, disabled and re-enabled the microphone and more to no avail. I reached out to yi and received a response stating the following:

"Thanks for contacting technical support. Please note that both time-lapse video and motion are by default no sound. If the camera is in normal video mode and still no any sound coming out it should be a hardware issue with the camera so you need to get in touch with the seller/vendor for a warranty request.
Regards,

Axxx Dxxx
YI Technical Support"

As you can imagine this was extremely frustrating considering this message came from technical support. I reached out to Amazon and they offered me a full return. Due to the response I received I will have to put some strong consideration into which camera I buy next. I am posting here in the forum to bring it to your attention that the issue I experienced may need to be looked into. I have done nothing to cause damage to my microphones an can pinpoint the last video where the mic worked. Hopefully no one else is experiencing this issue and Yi please update your responses to customer inquiries to incorporate direct links to warranty request. To receive an email that says "get in touch with the seller/vendor" is disheartening considering I purchased the product from you.

To be fair the camera quality was pretty good for the most part. It included great features at a great value. This may simply be a one off but it sure isn't a good one. I have video quality on my youtube channel for anyone considering purchasing. Personally, I'm just gonna find a good deal on the competitors product and move on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Crack in corner of the device pretty much after unboxing, below average video quality.
Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2017

I have to say that I'm a bit let down with the quality of video, as well as the structural integrity of the product. I've had the device for about a month and have taken a handful of videos immediately out of the box, and was placed in my office shortly after. Today, I took the camera out and noticed it has developed a crack on the top left hand corner (if you're looking at the front of the camera). Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this supposed to be an action camera? I haven't subjected the device to any form of "action" yet, and it has already cracked. Apparently, the extreme conditions of my home office are too much for the item. The crack doesn't really cause any issues with the device, but it's a bit frustrating as it has literally sat on my desk untouched for about a month.

The video quality is a bit lackluster as well. When I hear 4K video, I'm expecting very fine, crisp video and pictures. Not the case at all. The 5 videos I have taken since I took this thing out of the box have been fuzzy and leave a lot to be desired. This is at the highest setting allowed on the device. I guess you get what you pay for. I bought the camera for my families upcoming trip to Disney, so it will suffice, but I can't say that I would recommend this product to anyone. If I had to do it over, I would have spent more on a better quality camera. Oh well, lesson learned.

2.0 out of 5 stars SD Slow Card issue.
Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2017
Style: Camera OnlyColor: Night BlackVerified Purchase
I really want to like this camera. The video quality is top notch and rivals and some cases even better! I love the ease and layout of the menu. You can go in and change things around very quickly. I can write up a bunch of positive things to say, but there are many youtube videos out there and review blogs that will talk this camera up.

But you guys want real talk, right? Well there's an issue out there where this camera will throw "Slow Card" errors and will prevent you from recording or even turning off the camera at times. Even with the fastest cards in the market, i have received this error. I have the Sandisk Extreme pro 32GB, the Sandisk Extreme 64GB, and Lexar 1000x 64GB and these have all displayed the "Slow Card" error. Not once in a while, no no no! About every 3 recordings. These cards are on their approved cards list too! My only work-around is to swap cards when this happens.

There are many forum discussions about the attempts to fix this, but I haven't found a sound solution. I can't depend on this camera, and feel like I wasted some money. Yes, the image is good, but i prefer reliable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed after extensive testing
Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2016

I have used all the options on the YI 4K Camera. I found that in general, the video image quality is not even close to what I get when I record with my cell phone. The video is stuttering at times, the color is off, the contrast not very good, and the video image looks washed out. One positive, it is doing well in low light compared to others in low light. The Microphone is decent that audio quality is good. EIS is not very useful and as an action camera, is producing video that is rocky.

Another thing I don't like: the camera comes with absolutely just the bare essentials, battery, that's it. It does not come w/ MicroSD card, it does not come with any kind of case or even straps. So right out of the box, you can't use it without worry that you would accidentally bump it or drop it.

I like the small size. Ultimately, I decided to return it after using it for a few days, and given it every benefit of the doubts. I like to believe that Yi 4K camera is the Go Pro Killer, I really do. But it disappoints me. Go Pro video looks much better. Although according to spec, Yi 4K Camera have every component with better spec.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's cheap for a reason
Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2017
Style: Camera OnlyColor: Night BlackVerified Purchase
I know why you want this. It's a 4K action camera with optical stabilization and a ton of good sounding features for way cheaper than a GoPro, but it just isn't worth the annoyances.

I've owned two of these units now. The first had the charging port break and was taken back by Yi. Both cameras had issues with my SD card saying it was too slow to write to some of the time. Until the camera was reset then it was happy to use it.

Worst part is that now, in cold weather, the camera believes the battery is drained when it's actually almost full. I used it for 20 minutes in my car, turned it off, left it in the car for an hour, came back, and it claimed the battery was dead.

Yi also has terribly outdated customer support. Email only, with drop down options that are literally years out of date. They don't even have the latest firmware version of their own camera on the site.

Please do yourself a favor, spend more money on a better brand. This is a luxury item, don't cheap out on this kind of thing. I seriously regret my purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars Stopped working after 5 months
Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2017

I'll start with the Pros... It's affordable, easy to use. The image quality is great. I love it's ability to compensate for the fish eye effect that most action cameras are subject to. I've used this for photos, for time lapse, and as a back up lock down shot in interviews, all to great success.
Now for the cons... It stopped working after 5 months due to what YI customer support is calling a "hardware issue". The battery charges fine when you plug it into the computer, but the camera itself will no longer turn on. All that happens is the light on the power button turns purple. I'm currently going back and forth trying to resolve the issue with the manufacturer, as Amazon's support window closed after 2 months.
I should also note that this is the second one of these cameras that I had ordered. The first one arrived as 2 small bags of screws in the box where the camera should have been. Amazon's customer service was very helpful at the time and gave me a refund, so I gave this another shot and placed the order again.

2.0 out of 5 stars YI 4K, quality control needs to improve.

This camera has really great features, takes great pictures and produces excellent video. But there was a problem with my unit. First, I did the firmware update as suggested. Menu's worked great and the touch screen was awesome. With stabilization on, the image seemed to be floating around erratically. This was so bad that the video made me feel sea sick while viewing. Also, the right side of my image was out of focus. The left side was crystal clear, the right side was very blurry. I did so much research before buying this and it's such a shame that the quality control on this item seems to be lacking. I returned it, and I really wanted to order another one and hope for the best, but I don't want to go through the whole buying and returning process just hoping to get a good one. Very disappointing. Now I will do more research and find a more reliable camera next time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Amazing till it worked
Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2016

The camera worked great for a few days, before it didn't. I had fully charged the battery of the camera a night before, and was shooting some videos in the morning. After a while, it randomly refused to turn on and wouldn't turn on at all anymore. I tried turning it on using the USB external supply, and the camera works, but doesn't turn on, on battery. I thought it's a firmware update issue, so I updated the firmware too, but that didn't help either. Interestingly, the battery charges when the camera is plugged in for charging as the red led light turns up. But the camera doesn't turn on on the battery anymore.

I really loved the camera, so this is really really disappointing. I hope this was just a faulty piece and not a major issue in their product. I've applied for a refund/return and will update the rating and review once I order and review this camera later again.
