5.0 out of 5 stars4k30 and 1080p120...
Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2016
Pros:
*Great 4k and 1080p/120 option.
*Excellent touchscreen performance (smooth, no lag, responsive)
*exceptional audio for an action cam
*Built in tripod adapter
*excellent app (not quite as easy as go pro, some icons aren’t what you expect them to be)
*Can run directly off USB power bank with or without the internal battery installed.
*Available in white to help with heat if recording outside on hot summer days.

Cons:
*128gb card support seems sketchy, their site lists 6 cards they recommend and they are all 64gb cards. I have 2 of the cards they recommend (actually 4 of each), both types work perfectly, but I also have the 128gb versions of those same cards and they do not work. I have formatted in camera and on pc with different block sizes but they all pretty much start recording, then crash when the file size limit is reached producing a corrupt file on the card. I believe a firmware update can and will fix this but as of version 1.12 (1.07 default) it is still a no go.
**this is not really a “con” of the camera but when running direct off USB power source with no internal battery installed I seem to be limited to 3ft cable length in certain situations. With a 6ft cable the cam will shut down shortly after recording starts. I have successfully recorded 15 straight hours (minus card swaps every2h18m) with a USB power bank and 3ft cable. I tested this at home and found that one of my AC powered USB hubs was able to power this device successfully on a 6ft USB cable but none of my battery powered USB banks could do this. I suspect the cam is running very close to the 2.4a limit so I will try a male-male-female “Y” cable to boost power to see if this resolves the “issue”

IMO:
I have a very specific use case where I need to record up to 18 hours of fishing from a full size bass boat. I have a gopro hero3 white, a hero session and now this Yi2. I do not have any of the hero4 editions, I had the black but it would overheat every so often and shut down so it was returned. This part of the review will be comparing this against those other models.
Up to now, the best “overall” solution I had found was a Hero3 white with battery eliminator and waterproof housing mod. This setup allows me to record no matter what the weather conditions but it can be cumbersome changing cards, always required an external power source (batteries were always dead because I never use or charge them), always had to set the date/time (battery eliminated), had muffled/unsuable audio (waterproof housing) and it was 1080p30 max.
The Hero Session with its integrated battery, waterproofing and excellent dual microphones was a good upgrade and compromise. The “upgrade” being excellent audio, great video… as long as the sun was behind us and protune was enabled, and 1080p60 max. The “compromise” being it was not “waterproof’ while charging and the if the sun was facing the cam the subject would be too dark. However, If the weather turned I just unhooked the charger, closed the door and it was weatherproof for as long as the battery could hold. I also didn’t have to remember to set the date/time since it always had power from the internal battery.
The Yi 4k cam has all the resolutions and modes you could want. The touchscreen works incredibly well, is fluid, is responsive and is excellent for framing shots or checking status without always needing the app. The app works well and connects much faster than the gopro app but the controls in the gopro app are clearer and easier to use. In the Yi app there are some icons for switching video/photo and they appear to do the opposite of what I expect, however, I only really use the app to check the framing after a high-speed run (easier than getting behind the cam when it is mounted)
The things that set this apart for me are more mechanical, I can run this cam directly off a usb power bank with no battery installed in the camera (hero3 white can do this, hero session does not) which greatly reduces heat out on a hot summer day. (the hero3 and session will get so hot you can't hold them... but they still ran and the session is waterproof so I can cool it off in the lake) It is available in white which makes a huge difference in the amount of heat this thing absorbs. It shoots 4k and 1080p/120 along with a host of other modes including in-camera time lapse video.
Of course, all of this is accomplished outside of the waterproof housing. This still leaves me needing the hero3 white setup for rainy days but I was in the same situation with the session
I think MarkHawkCam has a complete review of the technical aspects on youtube ([...]) and covers everything in depth. Here is a sample running video I captured and uploaded right off the card to youtube with no enhancement: [...]
Overall, for me, this cam fits in my arsenal at a very fair price. It doesn’t replace any of the other cams I am already using but it my new primary camera.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood action cam but community is limited

The Yi 4k cam has the potential to be GoPros competition. It has all the specs of the GoPro Hero5 but at half the price. Does 4k30fps, 2.7K60fps and so on. It's very similar to the GoPro Hero 5 and has a better sensor then the GoPro Hero 4 black. You will need a fast memory card for 4k video recording. I used 1440 to record to keep file size down and I'm still about to convert it to 1080 so low light videos looks really good.

Quality was really good and low light quality was really good especially with manual EV adustment and ISO adjustment. It allowed me to get photos from near low light conditions. Dark room with just the TV in and I was able to pick up details in the camera. It is a little bit noises but if you wanted some footage of low light then this camera is good for that. But the ability to shoot in higher resolution then to shrink it down from 4k or 2.7k to a 1080 resolution, video quality looks really nice.

So all this good talk about the Camera so why the 3 stars.
-when recording in 1440 resolution, video would last a minute or two then cut out and the camera was very warm. Too warm for me and I know recording in high resolution will produce heat but this seems very high. I have use my iPhone to record a 40 mins 4k video and that got warm but the camera was way warmer then that which isn't normal.
-even with a fast the SanDisk Extreme, 4k video cut out every minute so I have no idea what it did that. Completely reset device and still did it.
-community of users seems small so I have a feeling Yi isn't working too hard on their app. Right now there's only Facebook sharing or Facebook live for iOS app. No way to even save the videos onto my device to share with other social media platform in HD. You need to use the app to pull the video and then you need to hit share it but not completely go through with sharing it and it will save a low resolution video onto your device.
-would love to see more social media sharing options for HD or even 1440 resolution besides Facebook.

I do hope to see improvements but as of right now, the app is what I think is draining the ratings for me.

I will return this device and pick up another one and see how it is and report back.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Camera. Fragile Screen

Most Recent Edit:

I cannot find a card that records smooth 4K 30p or 2.7K 60p. Above 1440p, my recordings stutter... Stop and go the whole recording. I thought it might be the camera, so I got a replacement.

The new camera has the same problem. I'm using recommended cards.

I'm reading that these cameras have problems with multiple cards. I havent found one yet that works... I dont want to spend $300 on cards to fine ONE that works....

3 stars stays because YI 4K is a promising camera for the price.

Original Review:

The Good (5 Star Qualities)

- Awesome touch screen, easy camera changes anywhere without 'needing' to use your cell phone.

- Awesome removable battery. You can shoot all day with enough batteries and memory cards.

- Tripod screw mount held on tight when used on my bike.

- I have never owned a Go-Pro, but I've had Mobius cameras. The videos/pictures this thing took at 1080p60 were very good. Shooting at 1080p60, a 32Gb card lasts about 1.5 hours. Battery left to spare!
__________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Bad (Star Deductions)

- Build Quality: (VERY FRAGILE) Less than 24 hours into having this camera, the screen had cracked. I had the camera in my pants pocket. Somehow my phone put some pressure on the side edge of the thin aluminum surrounding the 'Gorilla Glass'. The edge deformed a bit and sent 3 cracks all-the-way through the screen to the other side. Apparently, gorilla glass is only strong from the front. Anyway, this rendered the left side of the touch screen unusable so I was unable to change settings. Amazon offered me a refund, so the camera is on it's way back. I still recommend this camera but... Be Very Careful Handling It!

- Audio Quality Poor. I had the camera mounted to the handlebars of my bicycle. All I could hear was wind. I didnt buy this camera for audio, but audio is pretty bad compared to others.

- Stuck in Off mode? A few times i tried to boot the camera to no effect. I removed the battery and put it back in and the camera worked again.

- No PC/Mac app to control settings... Just cell phone.

- No Lens Cap... Seems like common sense. Even Mobius gives out cheap lens caps.

- No tethering loop hole. Given the fragility, I think there should be a wrist tether loop, or a general tethering loop hole as a backup, in-case the primary mount fails.

3 Stars for the stuff they left out, but I will buy another!

3.0 out of 5 stars I have limited knowledge of its use; no clear instructions; HELP!
Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2016
Style: Camera OnlyColor: White PearlVerified Purchase
This camera may actually be MUCH better than the rating I have given it; if I had a clear understanding of the shooting modes (resolutions and fps) and how the chosen mode affects the quality and file size of the movie I shoot, I could give you a more trustworthy rating. The technology build into this camera is over my head, and although I have Googled for information trying to figure it all out for several days, I have not found a single source of info that lays it all out in a way that I can understand... Since the camera is too sophisticated for my level of knowledge, I'll never be able to recognize its potential value to me. Hence, the 3-star rating, which is probably closer to the rating I would give my brain for knowing how to use it! :-)

I purchased this camera with the intention of shooting bike rides through some beautiful settings in my city, each movie being about 10 min. long, and uploading them to YouTube. I want a high quality, pleasing video at the lowest file size possible (for uploading efficiency). I shot a sample video using the 1280 X 720 at 60 fps setting. The resulting video is over 2 GB in size! That's too large a size to feasibly upload to YouTube. So I would need to "compress" it; but doing so will lower the viewing quality considerably. What to do??!?!?!??? I know there are ways to compress the video without the considerable loss of quality, but I don't know those "ways," and when I ask people who DO know, they give technical solutions that I still can't understand. What I need is for someone knowledgable to say, "Use THIS setting to shoot your video... OK, now export your video using THESE settings, and you'll be able to upload it to YouTube without a hitch and with no loss of quality." Until I can find a recommendation like that, I'm afraid I won't really know the proper rating to give the camera.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Okay Beginner Camera
Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2019
Style: Camera OnlyColor: White PearlVerified Purchase
This was a pretty good little starter camera. I bought it last January because I wanted something to take on hikes and get pictures without draining my phone battery. At first I was pretty happy with it! There’s no zoom feature and you can’t really see the pictures you’ve taken until you upload them later, so I ended up snapping a million to get good shots, but it takes nice, wide pictures that take in a lot more space than you’d think. It needed to be held at least a little still, but I got a lot of good, colorful shots I was happy with.

It doesn’t do great in low light, but that’s to be expected without a flash feature. It did do pretty well taking pictures of things a flashlight was pointed at.

The reason I didn’t give this a higher review is that it didn’t quite make it through the year before the picture quality started to decline. I would take 700-900 photos a hike, and it went from 75 percent being good shots to 50 percent, then less and less until I found that I was lucky to get a good 20 or 30 out of 500. The issue seemed to be the focus, as most the pictures came out super blurry regardless of how still the camera was held (tested with a tripod a bit just to see if it was me; it wasn’t).

If you are thinking about action cameras but don’t want to commit to the high price of a GoPro, this is a good tester. If you consider it a temporary starter then you won’t get too disappointed if it starts to fail like mine. And it did last about 8 months before it really got shoddy. It’s a much cheaper investment than the higher end cameras, at any rate, so if you’re on the fence about what kind of camera you want or if you’ll use it, get this as a starter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for scuba diving under 20m/66 ft
Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2019
Style: Camera OnlyColor: Night BlackVerified Purchase
I brought this camera to a scuba diving liveaboard. I expect it to take good videos after viewing footage by other Yi 4K divers on Youtube. When I took 4K@30fps videos, it worked OK but the video was not smooth when played on my Macbook Pro (2.5G intel i7 CPU, AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2G GPU). So I hoped to take 60fps videos at lower resolution. However, when I am under water (around 20 m/66 ft, 26 C/79 F) the camera just cannot take video at 2.7K@60fps, 1080@60fps (average metering). It always complained "slow card". The micro SD card was the recommended Samsung 64GB 100MB/s (U3) MicroSDXC Evo Select. Since I cannot switch resolution under water (unless using the "in housing mode", which I didn't use as I didn't want to fiddle with the camera under water), I missed quite a few good shots. Sigh.

So I ended up taking 1080@60fps (center metering), EIS off, which appears to be "safe". The video quality was not bad in good lighting (shallow water, or clear water at around 20 meters). The battery life was also good. But I felt disappointed as its software/hardware are not reliable enough to handle all resolutions/frame rates it claims. And I felt sorry for missing shots under water.

I did a bit math about "slow card": in terms of data throughput calculation:
4K@30fps = 3840*2160*30 / sec = 248,832,000 / sec
2.7K@60fps = 2704*1520*60 / sec = 246,604,800 / sec
So if the camera can handle data throughput at 4K@30fps, it should be able to handle 2.7K@60fps. But it didn't perform as expected, even at 1080@60fps (average metering), which as an even lower data throughput.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good video, terrible Audio.
Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2017
Style: Camera OnlyColor: Night BlackVerified Purchase
I feel like many review of this camera gloss over some crucial details when comparing against GOPRO.

1. The audio is terrible. All low-frequency noise is dropped, and you are left with very "tinny' representation of sound. Also, any loud noise will blow-out the audio when played back. Something as simple as a loud clap near the camera will produce static-filled reproduction on playback. This is the same as on the Yi 4K+ as well, even with external microphone. Something in the software is mucking up audio, and they have yet to address it fully. If you have NOT used a GOPRO before, then the audio might suffice.

2. Video is good, but many comparison reviews to gopro are using standard settings for both cameras. As an example, the Hero 5 Black will be on standard settings, but uses up to 1200 ISO when the Yi 4K uses up to 1600 ISO. There are other differences as well, so take the comparison reviews with a grain of salt. Protune will have to be enable on the gopro for proper comparisons to make sure ISO limits are matches between the two, and also to set both to flat color profiles.

Overall, the audio is nearly useless with my testing, so I returned it. To me, having the sound blowout with loud noises is practically a defect in design. Even wind noise will produce the DB needed to cause static on playback. Something a 5 year old smartphone doesn't even suffer from.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great product, but microphone system is really wonky
Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2016

This product is great competitor to the GoPro models.

Pros
- Price vs the GoPro makes this a great deal
- The OSD is super simple, quick, and effective at getting what you need to.
- Picture from the 4K UHD is pretty great with my only grip is that it seems softer than higher priced DSLRs
- This is my first action camera, but charging over USB AND a removable battery is amazing. Even charging it/powering it when it's on is great.

Cons
- BIG CON: The left mic on my YI barely works if at all, it only picks up light background noise or body noise (i.e my fingers touching it). My first thought was that maybe the left mic was directional, but after performing a test recording from all different angles, I couldn't get this mic to work. I'm not sure if I have a defect or not.
- The body of the camera has a cheap plastic feeling to it. Throwing in some extra money for a more durable build (rubber maybe?) would have been worth it as I feel like I almost have to get a case for it. For the case, I purchased YI's complimentary leather case.

Alas this is my first take on the camera. I haven't used it's other features like the complimentary app, EIS, low-light, or any video mode other than the 4K Ultra/30 FPS (which I believe is their version of HDR). I'll update this review with my thoughts.

So the 1st impression was super, but you never know how good or bad the thing before you try. We were visiting some places and I filmed a lot and by the end when you start editing your videos you'll realize that mic is SO HORRIBLE during windy weather. I've contacted YI support at their official website and they only reply that "try external mic" and I reply they that this camera doesn't support external mic, so they basically ignore me and my problem. So here we have:
1st problem is microphone which is really bad during wind. (Later I put dishwashing sponge on mic and it's became a little better)
2nd problem is battery. It's not as bad but actual working time is about 2 hours in stand by and recording from time to time (if you have extra batteries or powerbank you're fine)
3rd problem and the most disappointing is selfie stick. So I bought this camera with selfie stick which died it month and a half(right when warranty is gone. No wonders, right?) What happened with selfie stick we was in Mexico on vacation and suddenly it dislocated and the last upper pard just twisted out. So frustrating. The camera is pretty new as I said almost 2 months old. Also what is bad with stick is long pairing with bluetooth sometimes it's connecting not with 1st time. So overall expression is 3 of 5 star

3.0 out of 5 stars (Updated 6/30 fixed) Major issues with connecting to Wi-Fi

Edit 6/30/2018

YI customer service was quick to reply saying to try and turn off my phone's data/cell, I put phone on airplane mode and now camera seems to connect with Wi-Fi with no issue as long as I'm on airplane mode. I'm happy now!
Camera works great.

I was really excited to get the camera, opened everything up charge the batteries got everything set up then connected to the app on my phone through Wi-Fi and updated firmware.

The problem I'm having is about 9 times out of 10 the camera will not connect with Wi-Fi therefore I cannot use the app. I put in a service request but so far have only gotten the generic "we got your request" reply back.

I'm really hoping it's an easy fix because other than that I like the camera a lot, but it's inconvenient and tedious to have to have my laptop with me to download the videos all the time if I cannot use the app due to Wi-Fi connectivity issues.

It's the beginning of the weekend it China right now so I will give them until at least next week and then I will update this review.

If the problem is not able to be resolved unfortunately I will have to return the camera.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with the grain / low light performance, and worse: lack of audio recording... faulty unit?

So far I am a little disappointed with the low light performance, as well as the color balance which seems a little off. The "flat" color mode also is not very useful. But I will put it to test more and report further.
-- update:
So far I have not been able to find a way to minimize the low light trails that occur, even when I lower the maximum ISO to 400 (does not go under 400): when I enter an indoors location, I occasionally get trails, like old analog video, which is probably due to the camera trying to compensate for low light by adding Gain.
To make things worse, my unit appears to be a faulty one, as it doe snot record sound, but rather a silent hiss, no audio whatsoever, even after checking recording setup. And I am currently in Brazil, so I might not be able to send it back in the mail (untrustworthy Brazilian mail system), so I might be stuck with this faulty unit for months!
Yi has promptly contacted me and I am currently sending them the footage so they can see what might be the problem with the lack of audio.
