FYI: See bottom of this for some "hidden" features. I have also included info about use cases and my general feelings about the device below my initial review of the Rii itself. TL;DR: it's a great device and if you're looking at devices similar to this and don't want to spend a fortune, you will be pleased by the Rii 8+. I watched numerous YouTube reviews of this device before purchasing, and that may help you decide if it's right for you.

I was looking for the perfect device that can fill three functions: be used as a media center remote, have the ability to function as mouse and keyboard for my Raspberry Pi, and be able to be used as a mobile mouse and keyboard for remote job locations to be used on Windows/Linux Servers, Android Devices, and other machines which often don't have a full keyboard and mouse or any inputs at all.

It fills all three and I LOVE IT. I heard the Rii 8+ was really light and by golly it is at only 3.2 ounces. Many times, this means the build quality is skimpy or the product will not hold up to daily use an abuse. I'm a guy who uses a mechanical keyboard that weighs 8 pounds, so I like some heft in my electronics! That also means I generally despise rubber dome keys. The keys on the Rii 8+, however, have great push down force and both and audible and physical click. You will know that you pushed a button on this, unlike some cheap TV / media remotes with squishy keys.

I have found the Rii to be surprisingly robust. While I wouldn't recommend intentionally trying to snap it in half, I do think it will hold up to general use very well. If you're going to tote it around with you all the time to use on the job, a small case might be nice to prevent it from getting scratched up or to prevent keys from being pressed, but I don't think that it's mandatory. The lightweight of the device also means that dropping it is not as injurious as it might be to a device with more weight. It weighs less than my SmartPhone!

The Rii 8+ just plugs in and WORKS, which also makes it perfect for Raspberry Pi enthusiasts like myself. That was one reason I purchased this: to use as a portable keyboard for my Raspberry Pi. So, does it work for the Pi 3+? IT WORKS AMAZINGLY WELL. Even though I have a 7 inch touch screen for my Pi, this device is so much more pleasant to use on Rasbian. Best of all, it means that when I go out to work on PCs, Servers, Linux Desktops and other devices that I can just bring this along since it works on everything I've tried it with. The primary barrier to this not working on a device is going to be the fault of the device not support USB Wireless HID, NOT because of the Rii 8+.

A word about Smart TVs: If you have a Smart TV that this doesn't work on, it's not the Rii's fault. It's your Smart TV. Keeping input proprietary is a huge problem with such devices because some Smart TV manufacturers want you to use "approved" input devices, despite most sporting fully fledged Linux / Android / Windows Operating Systems beneath the veneer of the Smart TV application. That, and they skimp on universal drivers to to save a few megabytes of storage. If a Raspberry Pi can run this, your Smart TV should be able to as well. If it doesn't, complain to the manufacturer, not the builders of the Rii.

Now for some handy features that didn't pop at at first glance:

1) Function Key* + F8 = Turns off click input from Touch Pad

2) Function Key + Swipe Up/Down on Touch Pad = Scroll Up/Down

3) Function + Space bar = Adjust DPI / sensitivity of touch pad

4) Function + Enter = Sends Ctrl+Alt+Del signal

5) The Rii 8+ uses standard mouse and keyboard drivers. So if you wanted to remap keys, you can easily do so using any software that is able to do so. Just make sure the software is able to discriminate between multiple input devices so that it knows the key press on the Rii and your regular keyboard are different.

3.0 out of 5 stars3 solid stars - good utility, stable, has more potential though
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2018
I got this unit to work with several devices: PS3, FireTV Stick, Raspberry Pi, Win 10 PC. So far, I've tested it with PS3 and Fire TV. On PS3, the device is OK. I did not have the experience I was expecting because the mapping of keys from the PS3 controller to the Rii was not immediately clear. More importantly, technically, I had dificulty paring the device to the PS3 and when it did pair on EVERY use, the PS3 became unresponsive after about 3 or 4 minutes and had to be power cycled. For me, this is not an acceptable application for this item.

As for the Fire TV, the Rii pairs quickly and worked as expected once I figured out how to navigate. Some apps or the Fire OS give hints on the screen as to which key to press for certain actions. For example Esc is used for the Back function. I haven't yet determined which key corresponds to the Menu key on the Fire TV remote. In my opinion, this device is indispensable for using Firefox, or Silk browsers, although, driving the circular cursor takes some getting used to, and it got lost and became unresponsive a couple of time while using Firefox.I have not figured that out. It's not that big of a problem, though obviously the experience would be better without this particular feature.

I will update my review wafter I try it on the Pi and PC.

About the unit. Overall, I like the device, but just middling.
What I like:
1) Multi platform application. I can use it on several devices.
2) Works as expected in most cases.
3) Has a good feel to it in terms of materials although, I'm not sure how durable it is. I purchased a protection plan just in case-not sure if it will cover what might go wrong.
4) So far, except for PS3, it has been stable, no connection issues.
5) I like the power saving feature; it's similar to that of the PS3 controller and cuts down on inconvenient charging cycles. Since I'm used to reconnecting the PS3 controller, the short delay to wake up the Rii is not a problem.

Those extra stars could be gained by improving the item in several areas:
1) Higher quality manufacturing process, including inspection and testing. My unit's backlighting is fair at best, being uneven, getting dimmer from left to right. The backlight on the arrow key cluster does not shine through the "slits" on the right side of the rubberized material covering the Up Arrow and Right Arrow keys. There is enough light leakage to illuminate the keys. It seems a relatively simple test could assure unifrom backlighting. I would classify this as an annoyance that separates a good experience from a great one. I will continue to use the item, but may return it for this reason.
2) The device could use some extra mass to give it it a heftier feel. I would prefer that it be slightly larger.
3) The packaging could include a more documentation that explains how to use the device in various applications and that also explains the key labels, especially, the Fn key combinations.
4) The BT dongle is poorly manufactured. I could not get it t fit in any USB port without feeling like I was forcing it. This is not a deal breaker for me because all the devices on which I would use the device BT (Bluetooth, sorry) equipped.
5) Touchpad could be larger.

3 solid stars with potential for 4, maybe 5 with some improvements.

I use this for a home media center and although the backlight is lack luster, it's reliable, very responsive and takes little effort to pair via Bluetooth. The green makes it pop in low light so it's easy to find. The mouse buttons on the left are a favorite. I had an older model of this and gifted it away after years of use. Highly recommend Rii

This size and format was perfect. Layout with the QWERTY keys was well within reach of my thumbs - loved it so much!!! My purpose for this keyboard was to use with my iPad and Android tablets. Was tired of typing on the screen when the on-screen keyboard would cover a huge portion of what I was working on. It needed to be bluetooth because a USB dongle was not available on IOS and my android phone/tablet. The problem? the mouse pad. IPad 7th gen did not function well. Too often the mouse would trigger an icon or other feature as you dragged the cursor around. It even triggers the uninstall feature of the iPad. Arrg! Not good if you just finished a design and your mouse pad closes your window because you touched it the wrong way. Another similar bluetooth mini keyboard I tried, had much better mouse response and behavior (but button size and spacing was all wrong). Not sure its software or hardware on the Rii, but its not quite there yet. Please fix it! Similar poor mouse behavior on my S9+ phone. The good news is that on my Amazon HD10 tablet, the blue tooth mouse worked perfectly. Also using my PC and the USB receiver, it worked flawlessly. No problems at all. It worked on a Win10 Laptop and even my old Win7 32 bit tablet. I tried to connect with my Logitec mouse USB receiver but it was not compatible. So this occupies another USB port. I gave this a 4 star because of the mouse pad behavior on bluetooth on iOS Otherwise a 5 star all around. On the 2.6Ghz USB, it is stellar!!!!! I wrote this review with the Rii keyboard on the PC. Very easy for two thumb typing because key spacing was the right amount for my thick thumbs. Also, button feel is good. It does make mild clicking noises with each key press, so no typing while my wife is trying to get to sleep. Overall a great buy and value. Great build quality and I like the dual bluetooth / USB receiver functions. Just please improve the mouse behavior while using bluetooth on iOS. I did not buy this for gaming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very little I would change.

So I just got this lil guy, and since they offered a $10 rebate for my opinions, I am writing a First Impressions review while using the device.

Firstly, I am very impressed with the build quality. Cheap enough to cost 20 bucks, but not crap. The plastic is molded well, textured nicely, and seams well without a sharp overhang or edge. This means a lot to my hands, and many devices have those edges that dig in over time. Overall, the design feels professional and attended to.

I have few complaints, I could say a lot about what I like, but I bet it would matter more what I would personally change about it.

1. The keys are not staggered at all, and there is no bump for home row identification. This makes all keys feel the same, and No-Look typing is not easy at all. All of the keys are the same size and shape as well, with no separation between the letter and number keys, and the function keys. a simple change to the keys to add a bump to 'J' and 'F' would help with finding the Home Row (especially in the dark), a staggered key layout would divide the three rows of letters and the row of numbers. A short space and/or raised plastic on the case could allow you to feel you passed the keys into the Function keys up top.

2. The Shift key is like a normal Shift, requiring you to hold the key and then press the letter or symbol. Holding this, my brain expects the way a phone handles it, tap it to activate Shift and then it switches off after the next keypress. That would speed up typing significantly.

3. Delete and Backspace should be switched in position or Delete should be moved somewhere else. I would be fine with just reversing them, since the current layout differs from my normal keyboard expectations. I will adapt, but I figured I would mention it annoyed me.

4. No dedicated Browser forward\back buttons. I can program the media buttons, but if I am jamming, that creates a browsing conflict. I resolved this with the media controls on my Bluetooth remote, but I would like more buttons for alternative functions.

5. Sometimes does that weird auto repeat and types 20 of some letter, I have had that odd signal repeat on a lot of wireless KBs so ...whatever.

6. Would have preferred Bluetooth over the RF dongle, but whatever. Would have saved a USB port, and I think there was a Bluetooth version in a different model. But it is fine, the cable allows for a port pass-through, I can easily use a hub.

I really can't complain too much. it types well, and all the features work. I can easily modify many settings with Windows to compensate for things I don't like about it, and it fits the purpose exactly. I didn't want a KB&M on the bed, I only wanted basically a remote control for my wife's media machine. This way, she can click between shows or scroll her news and such, with a nice small controller.

I am happy I found the backlit edition with the choice of colors. This product is terribly listed and there are so many clones and fake listings, it took me a bit of extra effort to ensure I was ordering the exact model I wanted, in the color I wanted, from a legitimate retailer. It would be handy if you listed all colors and models under a single listing with selection menus. I have seen other retailers do this for their products. It would cut down on the bad reviews on imposter products.

I am very happy with this remote on First Impressions, I will update if anything disappoints me later on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love The Keyboard (Had Some Initial Quality Issues That I Was Able To Fix)

*Update 8/30/2016: This works great with everything I've tried it with: Desktop PC (Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10), Laptop (Windows 8). Mac Mini (OS X Yosemite 10.10.5), and with the Raspberry Pi 2, 3, and Zero running KODI, RetroPie, and Raspbian OS. Plug it in and it just works. Edited to give 5 stars instead as the pros outweigh any damage in shipping (as it could be exchanged for a new one). Had it for 9 months now and it's one of the favorite things I use and the battery life is exceptional.*

This is a pretty nice product and feels pretty good in the hands and has a decent amount of buttons in the places for easy access for common functions/procedures. The media buttons work great and "out of the box" with VLC. I've used it on different laptops and desktops and it works just as it should like a true keyboard (and love that it is so small but still easy to use versus a larger keyboard that would sit on your lap). The only reason I am giving it 4 stars however is because when I got mine it did not work right away and there was a sound coming from it like something was loose. It worked when plugged in, but would not charge - I figured it was the battery and that it had lost a connection so I was going to return it as I wasn't sure what was inside and then I wondered about overall quality, etc.

I ended up cracking it open however unscrewing the four screws on the back (star bit screwdriver) and found that the battery was not stuck properly onto the back as I had thought which caused the noise and one of the wires was then disconnected from the battery to the board so it would not charge. I stuck the battery to the board in the square lines and the adhesive on the back of the battery stuck like it should (it must not have been placed correctly) and then re-soldered out the red/positive wire and everything has been working/charging as should. My guess is that something did not get pressed correctly in assembly but still didn't make any noise right away so it was shipped in the condition it was (otherwise it looked and worked new as I thought it should have). I could have returned it easily but also wanted to check it out myself to see if I could fix it easy.

Now that it's working - love it and definitely recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars TWO JUNKERS FROM RII
Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2016

Do not buy this unless the shipment is serviced by Amazon. These items are too risky in quality. I had three of the ESKY branded mini i8 remotes (older version). They all worked almost flawlessly for what they were. There were no reception issues. Over time my dog ate two of them. The third one had an issue almost a year after the purchase. The battery stopped charging. I charged it fully the day it was received without any trouble. It ran fine without needing a new charge for literally a few months. Then when it finally died I swapped in the partially charged batteries from the other models the dog ate. This, in my mind, is the advantage of the removable battery. When the third battery was finally depleted and it wouldn't charge, I just tossed it after a bit of troubleshooting. These things are cheap enough.

Now back to Rii. Before purchasing the third ESKY i8, Rii undercut the price by a few dollars in the same ESKY advertisement, and the purchase therefore defaulted to them. I had nothing but issues with the received Rii i8 and sent it back as not working, I was really pissed since it was not what I ordered. The thing literally would not work even with the remote only a few inches from the receiver. The inputs to the screen were all over the place, key inputs were not made, and other key inputs would sent a stream of letters across the screen that need to be deleted. This is not the button sticking, but if a button is pressed and the remote loses connection to the receiver, the result is as if you are holding down the key until the connection is re-established.

After my third ESKY remote needed replacing, I came back to Amazon looking for another of the same model. Unfortunately it seems to be gone. I saw this new version from Rii, the i8+. I figured for $20-ish I'd give them another shot. The back-light feature is nice, but honestly I never really NEEDED it with the other models. The light from the screen in the living room from the TV is plenty, and I sit on the couch about 15 feet from the TV. I do think you're losing a feature with the internal, non-serviceable battery, even though they pitch it as a new feature. Look and feel is just about the same as the older i8. The textured backing is really a don't care for me. When I received this new i8+ from Rii, I let it sit and charge fully. When attempting to use it, I immediately had the same problems with the Rii i8 I sent back previously. Same crappy connection, to the point that the thing is not usable and just frustrates you when trying to do simple tasks like type the name of a movie or TV show. Once again I sent the Rii back as junk. The key here is to be sure to buy something serviced by Amazon. The no-hassle return and refund is VERY important when purchasing these things.
I still need a remote and am trying this next: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KF9IVKC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00
I did at least read one honest review from someone who said they had nothing but issues with the Rii i8+ and their replacement iPazzPort model works just great. Mine is in the mail and my fingers are crossed...

The item arrived quickly within Prime delivery timelines. I appreciated the minimal packaging as I hate smaller items packed in loads of bubble wrap and Styrofoam. The item arrived in a padded envelope and in a small box undamaged.

I found it was amazingly simple to set up. I have a custom Kodi box running KodiBuntu and OpenElec. I have one wireless USB dongle already plugged in so I plugged in the Rii's WiFi dongle next to it. I turned on the Rii and it worked instantly! I literally didn't do anything else for it to work properly in my setup.

The back-light is essential and that's why I purchased this unit. Although the keyboard isn't lighted 100% evenly, all keys are illuminated in a nice soft white glow (some keys are slightly brighter than others.) When using search fields, the keyboard sends key commands to the Kodi quickly and efficiently allowing me to verify what I've entered on the screen immediately.

I also really appreciate the physical on/off switch. The switch is tiny so it's out of the way. It's positioned on the top right edge of the device in a very ergonomic position to where a quick jaunt of the finger flips it on or off. The switch itself also has a couple "grooves" on its upper edge that allow you to locate it without looking directly at the device - a simple yet intuitive touch. This all makes it very convenient to quickly turn off the device when not in use leading to reduced battery consumption.

Not all keyboard keys work for all software configurations. This review is based on my Kodi box setup. All the important keyboard keys work properly so far, including the volume, back, enter, and video controls to name a few, but I have yet to test each and every key.

Pros:
+ Feels GREAT in my hands. The soft rubber is very attractive to hold - I found myself holding it and not even pressing buttons.
+ Very LIGHT weight
+ Instant and easy setup. No installation or registration required (your setup may require additional steps.)
+ Includes a USB charging cable and WiFi dongle so you only use ONE USB slot!
+ Keyboard buttons are spaced out evenly. They have a nice feel to them and good tactile response when pressed.

Cons:
- The mouse touch pad is little hit and miss. I use the keyboard mainly for navigating.
- No battery level indicator - only a low battery notification light.
- The device does miss a key stroke signal every now and then when pressing multiple keys in succession, but that could also be due to either my WiFi connection with the Kodi box to the house WiFi or the fact that the receiver is in a cabinet.

I’ve been searching for a portable handheld keyboard since typing in AVP is limited without an external keyboard. I didn’t want a full size keyboard because I want to use the AVP anywhere and fit it in my travel case. I’ve tried a few and this is pretty nice.

Pros:
* Convenient buttons outside of typing, inc. volume, pause, click, page up/down, home, arrows
* Placement of these buttons doesn’t require looking at it
* Trackpad out of the way, but there if you need it
* Small enough to fit in a small travel case with the AVP

Cons:
* Not possible to touch-type, you have to look at it. It’s missing the bumps on f and j even if you wanted to try.
* Only one shift button, on left.
* Could be even smaller and work fine I think.

It solved my problem and gave me features I didn’t know I wanted. Using it for volume control is much better than pinching. Using arrow keys to move the cursor is nice. Trackpad may come in handy. First day with it, so far, so good.

This little guy is the best 25ish bucks I've ever spent. Easy to charge, easy to connect, easy to use, and no more on-screen keyboards eating half the screen! I've used it with my Galaxy tablet, my S22 phone, a Dell ruggedized Win 11 tablet/laptop, and a win 11 mini PC. The only 'issue' I've found with it is that you frequently need to un-pair and re-pair when changing devices. But, unless you change devices a lot, that's not much of a bother. Anyone who needs a small, Bluetooth compatible fully functional (well, there are a couple keys that aren't included, but they're not ones commonly used) should get one of these.
